Another sleep in this morning for Nicole and I while Steve went for a run and got lost along the way... worrying thing is that I didn't even realise he was gone until I woke up from him opening the door after his run! After showers and packing and refueling we left and had breakfast at Subway before driving to Glasgow. On our way we were listening to the news and discovered that Glasgow was having a public holiday so when we arrived at 12pm almost every shop was closed. I am very thankful to all the people I talked to about Glasgow – they told me you would only need 2 hours in Glasgow and you will have seen it all... they are very right! We were there for 2 ½ hours but that is ... read more

We had another day in Edinburgh today. We started the day at McDonalds yet again to use their free Internet and by 12pm we realised we should probably get some breakfast, well we ended up having brunch because we couldn't find anywhere selling breakfast. Today was called 'Open Doors day' where some of the local attractions that you usually have to pay for are free but we didn't see anything that took our fancy so we decided to go for a tour of The Royal Yacht, Britannia (which is yet another vacation venue for the Queen and Royal family). It is about the size of a cargo ship but is actually a vacation boat for the Queen that was decommissioned in 2007. We saw that the Queen and Philip do not share a room (although they ... read more

Today we made it into town by about lunch time. Our first mission was a parking building. We took a token to get in but when we got in there we discovered they were going to charge £6.50 for 2 hours so we decided to leave. Well, I took the token to the machine expecting for it to pop out again saying 'No charges'... instead it said '£6.50'! I was not having that so I immediately pushed the 'call for assistance' button and expressed how unhappy I was having only been in the building for 5 minutes! Well after that we were told to drive to the exit and the guy would let us out... so he should!!! That would make it 1 to us and 0 to the parking people! After that drama we found ... read more

Europe » United Kingdom » England » North Yorkshire » York September 23rd 2011

Up late this morning as we are taking things easy at the moment! We moved out yet again and drove into the town (we found a free parking area today) and walked into the actual centre which has a stone wall around the outside of it (similar to Dubrovnik but not as good) that are the remains of the fort. It, of course, began to rain but we decided to walk the wall anyway and luckily it stopped raining after about 10 minutes into walking. We got some nice views of the town from up on the wall. The wall is only in sections because it is remains so we walked it until we came across the York Minster (which looks just like Westminster Abbey) and went in to have a look. We very promptly returned ... read more

Europe » United Kingdom » England » Cambridgeshire » Cambridge September 22nd 2011

Packed up again this morning (getting really tired of having to relocate every day so we are going to work on that). We drove into Cambridge centre to have a look around and find something we wanted to do and came across a hilarious sight... the local park, with green grass, children playing, people walking through, trees, tracks and... a herd of cows to keep the grass down! And what was even more funny is that no-one was reacting! We parked in a parking building which made us rip our undies at the other end because we were 3 minutes over the hour so we had to pay an extra £2 ($4 NZD) so had to pay a total of £8.50 for 3 hours! But we had a good look around Cambridge – it is definitely ... read more

We woke up on time with good intentions to go and do a walking tour recommended to us by Rebecca and Brett but somehow it didn't happen... and it was crappy weather outside anyway! Instead we mooched about our really nice, spacious hotel room then went on our own driving tour around Dublin and Nicole was our 'tour guide'... I would highly recommend hiring her... she is good at reading off a map and making history up! We dropped our car off at the rental place and caught the shuttle back to the airport. We checked in and went straight to our flight... time goes really fast when you have to check in and go through securtiy and all the other 'stuff'. Because we were one of the last ones to check-in (no Mum and Dad, ... read more

Europe » United Kingdom » Northern Ireland September 20th 2011

So turns out after the other 2 inspected their bedding they decided to get out their sleeping bag liners too...good decision! We packed up this morning and enjoyed our free hot breakfast that was included in our £11 a night price. We headed off, against the will of our GPS system, to the coastal route to Carrick-a-Rede rope bridge with a few stops along the way. As we arrived at Carrick-a-Rede it started to rain and the wind was blowing big time so we decided that shorts were not the best of clothing choice for the day and got changed. By then the rain had stopped-ish and we had our lunch in the car. The rain had kind of stopped by the end of lunch so we made a dash for it. When we went to ... read more

Europe » United Kingdom » Northern Ireland » County Antrim » Belfast September 19th 2011

So this morning we got up and packed up to head to Belfast. We went to reception to pay for our night and the lady looked down her list and said 'You aren't on the list so it is like you weren't even here. It makes my life to difficult if you pay so don't worry about it' – What a score! So far we have not come across a single rude or not very pleasant Irish person. Everyone we have dealt with has been so accommodating and helpful... I like Ireland!!! We stopped at another supermarket along the way to get some bits and pieces for lunch then went and found our backpackers. Our backpackers was right by the University and they must have just been startiing back because all the other houses/flats down the ... read more
