It was a VERY wet night last night and our group had 1 well flooded tent, many flat lilos and quite a few wet bags (but some had been left in the orning and thought that that would stop them from getting wet... Yea right!) Today was our free day in Amsterdam and guess who we hung out with... No, how did you guess? Yip, Tim and Carla (but that's ok because it was our last day together and they were going to do exactly the same as what we wanted to do). Today's mission... not to get too wet with the constant down pours! Alex dropped us off on the outskirts of Amsterdam them everyone walked with out tour leader into the town centre (except us) because some of them were doing a free bike ... read more

Today was our ealiest leaving time... 7.30am! I had my alarm set for 6.15am because our packs had to be on the bus by 6.45am... All I can say is just as well Carla had set her alarm for 6.20am because I turned mine off and went straight back to sleep again... Whopps! So this is going to be my shortest ever blog entry me thinks...: Spent the day travelling from Berlin to Amsterdam. When we were in Amsterdam we were taken to a place described as 'Cheese and Clogs' – exactly that, a man (a dodgy one at that) who makes Cheese and Clogs. Not many people bought stuff because Kiwis and Australians can't bring it back and the clogs were rather expensive! Arrived at our campsite and set up our tents just before the ... read more

Europe » Germany » Berlin » Berlin September 6th 2011

Today we started off with a 2.5 hour walking tour with a tour guide arounf Berlin – it was not a usual tour where he took us to buildings and explained what they were, he took us to very random places like construction sites and the underground subway station and explained the history and what used to be where we were standing. We were taking to the carpark of an apartment building to be told we were standing where the bunker of Hitler used to be and where he commited suicide. After this Steve and I along with a few others were on a mission to find some Havianias (Mum – they are a brand of jandles/thongs/flip flops/slip slops/whatever you call them!) as both our jandles are broken and we both have sore feet... unfortunately we ... read more

Today was a civil time to get up... or should I say normalish! 6.30-6.45 has become a usual wake up time on this trip for travel days. This morning we were ready very early Steve rung Elijah since he missed out on talking to him yesterday. It was a pretty uneventful drive, too cold when the air-conditioning is on and too hot when the air-conditioning is off. I pretty much did the ususal for a bus ride... read my book until I couldn't keep my eyes open then slept until I woke up then read my book until I couldn't keep my eyes open and so on and so on! We had a stop off in a city called Dresden where it was raining/spitting/making us rather wet! We went on a 'walking tour' which involved 2 ... read more

Europe » Czech Republic » Prague September 4th 2011

This morning one of the other Christchurch girl's said 'It's September 4th today' and it took me a while to click! I cannot believe it has been an entire year that we have put up with earthquakes! This morning brekkie wasn't until 9.30 but it got very warm so Steve and I were up at 7.40 and got ready to put a load of washing on... problem was the guy standing in the reception did not speak a single word of English and I had to sit outside the reception area for 50 minutes waiting for an English speaking receptionist to arrive (even though the sign on the door said reception was open from 6am-10pm!!!!!). We got our load of washing on and were then informed it would take 90 minutes to go through the washing ... read more

Travel day again! Nice early pack-up to head to Prague with a stop off at a Concentration Camp (Mauthausen Concentration Camp). I don't have any photos of the Concentration Camp because I really didn't want to. We started our trip with a 30 minute video and I was fine watching the video until the last 5 minutes where photos were shown from when the Americans made it to the camp. The photos of the dead was horrific and the living people were just as bad. We were then given 45 minutes to walk around the camp so we saw some of the barracks and found out what they were used for, we saw the crematorium then to get back to the bus we had to walk via the 'Parachute Wall' where the SS would line people ... read more

Europe » Austria » Vienna » Vienna September 2nd 2011

We started today off with a driving tour around Vienna, stopped of at a castle then we were dropped off in the middle of town. We some how ended up hanging around with Tim and Carla today. Our aim was to find the markets that had been pointed out at the beginning to the driving tour... unfortunatly we were given the wrong directions and ended up spending most of our day walking around. We went to a cafe and had tradtional Veinna coffee, a slice of Suck-a-toe (as Steve calls it, I think it is actually Sucatorte) and an apple strudle with vanilla sauce – that was really nice!!!!! We were picked up at 3.30 to go on a tour of the original Schnapps museum. The guy that took our tour was the 5th generation of ... read more

Today we went to Vienna. On our way we stopped in Bratislava (For anyone who has watched Eurotrip... It is nothing like it!) I can't decide between which is my favourite place – Lauterbrunnen or Bratislava. We did a short walking tour around Bratislava then had 2 hours free time. We walked around the quaint little streets and they had a few market stalls around. I just love how quiet and cute the town is and they have a lot of funky shops. At the end of the walking tour myself and another girl found a hippy type of shop where many of us bought something... I finally got a bag which I have been looking for since before I left New Zealand! I was guttered that we had to leave but we had to move ... read more

Europe » Hungary » Central Hungary » Budapest August 31st 2011

– The new rap Steve has made up... oh joy! Today was a free day in Budapest. We were given train tickets the night before so we were able to head into town whenever we wanted. We decided to hang out with Tim and Carla again today. We headed up the hill to find the underground caves which we really didn't find (turns out they were closed anyway) and instead we went to find the Labirynth... which was also closed! We gave up eventually and Steve and Tim went to the 'House of Terror' and Carla and I went to have a massage and shop. It was my first ever massage and eventually we found a place for Thai massages... little did I know and little did Carla inform me that Thai massages are the most ... read more

Drive day again, and a long one! Sitting for that long on a bus when a lot of people have the runs is not great... every time there was a stop it was a mad rush to the toilet and the toilet's did NOT smell good afterwards! Our destination for today was Budapest. After a long day of driving we made it to Budapest and went to a castle at the top of the hill on the Buda side of town. We spent a while here and had amazing views of the entire Budapest. Our Tour leader told us that apparnently Budapest used to be two seperate towns called Buda and Pest then when the bridge was built to join them together it became Budapest. Set up our tents then went had tea. Our bus driver ... read more
