Hi all, Yes, we are home now. Having Italy withdraws for sure. Our trip and flight home was good. No delays and people at the airports were nice. One British Air rep was especially helpful. David and I did not have seats together on the return. After boarding the plane and asking someone people to move, we were separated by 10 rows. The British air agent from the counter boarded the plane and found me. He was able to move us to the other side of the plane, together! At first I did not think too much about sitting with strangers for 9 hours. But thankfully, I did not have to do it. It would have been lonely. The day was full of standing in LINES. Sometime, I will have to calculate the number of lines ... read more

Bidets are cool, handy and we need them in the US (look it up, no further description needed) There is a flush button for number 1 and a flush button for number 2, hopefully you can tell the difference Public bathrooms are an adventure Hot and cold sink valves are foot levers on the floor Sometimes paper, sometimes not.... The seat is cold when it is 43 degrees out One bathroom, however one stall for men and one for women, in the same room You must know the Italian word for MEN or WOMEN The light is on a timer, so do not take too long The word "tirata" means PULL, learn it! The 3 people before you seemed to be conserving paper (if its brown, flush it down: if its yellow, let it mellow) After ... read more

Well I did hear about a few restaurants that had an American Thanksgiving dinner, but we were not interested. I hope all our friends and loved ones are enjoying their day. We are thankful for so much!!!! I have discovered that David likes to take pictures at dinner and especially of me. Usually our dinners are after a long day of walking and I am exhausted. Enjoy this collection of photos from our dinners and afternoon cafes. In most, I am less that thrilled to have my picture taken. Good times....... read more

Cosimos de Medici and Elenora de Toledo were the ruling leaders of Italy in the 1500's. Today, we walked across the Arno river and visited the Pitti Palace, with the Boboli Garden. I was more interested in the Garden and we checked that out first. The landscape architect was fantastic. The slow growing Cypress and Sycamore trees of Tuscany were huge. In the garden, there were signs everywhere telling you not to drink the water. Honestly, I was not even tempted. This palace and its rooms were so beautiful. The Medici family had 11 children and this house was definitely big enough. There was a "Costume Exhibit" in part of the palace. It consisted of women's fashions of the day. Under a very dim light, they had the actual burial clothing of Cosimos and Elenora. It ... read more

Awesome tourist day for us. We visited the Santa Maria del Fiore. We also climbed the 436 stairs to the top of the Duomo. There are about 50 small steps to our apartment. So after 1 1/2 weeks, we thought we would be ready for the Duomo climb. We had a little shortness of breath, but the view from the top was absolutely worth it. David said he could stay up there all day We went at about noon, however I did see a crowd up there at sunset. That must be very nice as well. Going up was hard on the legs. Coming down was a tight spiral staircase, it was tough on the mind. It was such a treat to go up. We are getting a little home sick, so this was very fun ... read more

In the Piazza di Signora, there is the Museo di Palazzo Vecchio, which was the residence of the Medici family starting in 1500's. The place is wonderfully preserved to its condition in the 1500's. We are very glad that we visited it. It was well worth the 12 euro entrance fee. The frescoes, walls, floors, windows and paintings were fantastic. We took quite a few pictures, but they do not do it justice. To see it personally, was amazing. ... read more

Ok, Today was our specially planned day to go to LUCCA!!! We had to go via bus. However, of course it was not the same bus from last week to Siena. We went back to the train/bus station and again had to ask four people for directions. Again, the ticket office was behind the station, across the street and down a side street. By now, we are getting used to the run around. Honestly, most of the Italians looked very confused too. The bus ride was fine, expect for some whining New Yorkers, that were gripping at each other. I finally fell asleep for the 1 hour ride. After arriving at Lucca, my plan was to rent a bicycle. Lucca is a medieval town that still has the high fortress walls around it. On top of ... read more

Before leaving home, I researched a place for us to go to church while in Florence. I found this English speaking church, that met across town. After some gelato on Sunday night, we headed over there. It ended up being a lot of fun. The church is attended by many English speaking students, that are studying university here. The music was very contemporary and informal. About 10 people got up to say a few words. They even had us introduce ourselves. It was a great experience, I am so glad that we did it. http://www.fgfint.blogspot.com/ ... read more

Day two of the Coffee School. Gabrielle had invited us to sit in on the Cappucino art class, at a hotel, up the street from our apartment. We had use of the espresso machine, unlimited coffee, milk and hours to practice. With some instruction on the techniques, David and I, along with about 5 other students, made coffee for 3 hours. I only drank one and David had 4 cups. Most of the creations went down the drain. Check out the pictures, David was able to make several really good cups, with leaves on top. Mine was very scary looking. If you know me, you know that my hands are very shaky, even on a good day. My cappucino art really turned out to be a dinosaur looking thing. (I was trying for a heart)... read more
