Top 10 Check List: *1. Being able to pronounce the various districts in Hong Kong, Tsim Tsa Tsui, Hung Hom, Mong Kok… and knowing how to get to the best 'coin cache' in HK. Learning to bargain at the wet markets of Hong Kong and only getting cheated as other locals do. *2. SCHOOLING in HONK KONG, and not freaking out when the teacher and students breakout in Cantonese! *3. Travelling through 6 provinces in China and now knowing where next I want to go in China, and being confident enough in my Mandarin to travel alone…amazing memories. Learning so much about the culture and people and history and economic frenzy … China is a growing giant and its good to understand what it needs for growth and what is stopping it from growth, and ... read more

Research tour in Guangzhou One of my courses organized a field trip visit to some start up companies and well established factories. For instance: the biggest Soya sauce/cooking sauce/spices manufacturer in China to study there production processes, fermentation tanks, etc. We visited yeast factories, pharmaceutical manufactures, bioremediation and phytoremediation companies. We were so well received (it was there that I finally learnt how to play majo). Indian Conference & Spice (pictures of India will be on my next, final, blog) India was just something else, I dont even know where to begin. I like India because you can easily search out for the real and untouristic parts... unlike other hot tourist spots like Thailand, you can still experience India in an authentic way. Things that marked me most were the heat!!!! the women and their bright ... read more

The past few months have been very packed, with my finals, a trip to Thailand, Shenzhen, Shanghai, Beijing, Guangzhou, and a visit from my mommy here in Hong Kong. It’s a bit overwhelming to think of writing a blog about my experiences, so to be honest I’ve decided just to put up some pictures, a few comments maybe a story or two…and that should be more than enough reading! As I meet you all again we’ll definitely sit down and chit chat some more on what you’ve been up to and more of my crazy stories of Asia are bound to come up : ) All the best! Cynthia ... read more

After mazeing through the noisy, busy streets and feeling like a little bee in one of the billions of concrete honey comb quarters, at last, mostly durring weekends, I’m discovering all the rest of Hong Kong; the mountains, and beaches, and forests, and islands,…………………… Here are a few pictures that should fill in the blank: . . . ... read more

English Names Most Chinese, apart from their original names get English names while in their teens. They expect non-Chinese to be unable to pronounce or retain their names (I try but full names are hard). The other day, a friend of mine explained that it was his English teacher from Australia that gave him his name “Lackla” after a lake in Australia. So everyone introduces themselves to foreigners immediately by their newly selected English names: Candy, Sincere, Nicole, Joy, James, etc; At one of the cultural events, some one pointed out that my name said in Chinese (the sound pronunciation: SinDiAh) meant “Elegant Angel”, I’m loving this culture more and more…. The Buzz Hong Kong, which use to be Asia’s #1 trafficking spot for opium, is a huge region, with all the 200 islands around, but ... read more

I really thank God for the privilege of today! Sitting in front of the window of my residence room I’m starring out at the 7am traffic. My body is still jet-lagged and so I wake up really early ( 5 or 6am). The residence I’m in is said to be the most luxurious res. In Hong Kong ! They just built it but charge the same price : ) Thus far I’ve been learning some Cantonese, most are so shocked when I speak the little I know. However, Mandarin is what I really want to learn and thus far my Japanese friend who speaks little English has been teaching me some Japanese so that we can understand each other and so in all I might get really confused very soon with all the languages. I’ve been ... read more

Destination: info from CIA website Hong Kong has more than 200 islands Brief History: Occupied by the UK (The British) in 1841, Hong Kong was formally given up by China the following year; various adjacent lands were added later in the 19th century.
