Hola todo el mundo! Del fin del mundo! A blog by Dave... Where am I? You may ask... I´m in Ushuaia... The world´s most southerly city. At latitude 54S, it´s almost as far south as our home in Churchill is north! It´s the start of summer down here, there's almost no end of daylight and the weather is pleasant (although it changes by the minute). It was a fair bit of flying to get down here, and when I arrived after 40 some hours of being awake I should´ve been ready to sleep... However, I was wired! I did not sleep well that first night... I don´t know why... It was bright and sunny outside at 22:00 hrs and I didn´t feel tired in the least bit. It was really strange, my eyes were experiencing rapid ... read more

A big hello to all of our blog followers... A blog by Dave... We haven't blogged for a wee while, partly because we've not traveled a great deal during the year other than work related trips, and partly because we've had almost endless sunshine all year and have spent most of our time outside... However, we are now losing daylight very quickly and the temperatures are falling by the day so we're starting to get into hibernation mode - ideal for writing a blog or two. There has been a few 'incidents' this year involving our furry-faced friends... There was one fellow who got charged a couple of times by a young bear on the Town Beach and another chap who got bitten and scratched by a different young bear! Both men were O.K., but understandably, ... read more

Hello to all blog followers! The weather right now is 'most unpleasant', which I think is a very slight improvement on this morning's weather - which was 'particularly unpleasant.' Yesterday's weather was 'somewhat unpleasant' and it's likely that tomorrow will be 'less than pleasant' too. However, I'm hopeful that by April it will become more pleasant, and by looking out the window, it surely must! What an awesome winter storm! The wind is howling. Outside, all you can hear is the sound of trees getting hammered and the metal panels of the building getting slammed by the nor'wester. However, the northern lights are spiraling above with vivid greens and bands of white filling the sky with mystery and wonder. It truly is a magical time of the year, with the aurora in full bloom and daylight ... read more

Hello fellow blog-meisters. Just over an hour north of London by plane is the sparsly populated border county of Northumberland and the pretty town of Alnwick (pronounced, "Annick"). This is where Dave grew up! Quaint fishing villages cling to the edge of the rugged coast, small farms and market towns are dotted throughout the hilly interior, and fancy-schmansy X-ray machines have private rooms in the hospitals. Theresa's foot needs some TLC but will recover in time for the next adventure (yup, already planning the next one...). We spent Christmas and New Year with family. It was also the wettest December (and year) since sometime in the 1800s and neither of us have any reason to disagree with those rainfall records! Many raindrops fell upon us and a lot of towns were flooded, rail-lines were washed out ... read more

Bonjour/es salaam alaykum. Having being in a state of semi-awakeness for over 36 hours, we stepped off the plane at Casablanca airport. Unusual for us, we had pre-booked a hotel room and an airport pick-up by taxi, but it was a great choice, given that it was late and our ability to negotiate prices in a French/Arabic mix was hindered somewhat! We rested in a rather pleasant and spacious hotel room with a balcony and lots of windows - we were quite lucky to have found a room like this for so cheap! In the morning we explored the streets, souqs (markets) and medina (old part of town) of Morocco's largest city. We twisted through the labyrinthine alleyways and discovered a seemingly endless amount of vendors selling almost anything imaginable... We certainly got our fix of ... read more

Hello Blog-followers, and a belated happy new b'ak'tun (or happy new year if you're not familiar with b'ak'tuns.) We are a wee bit late in publishing some of our latest blogs as we got a little side tracked. We briefly bounced between 3 of the world's continents this time around. Usually we seek out sun and warmth due to our homebase being situated in the subarctic (you know - that cold, dark, windy thing at the top) but his time we happenstanced upon rain and clouds mainly... It was an unlikely trip... But not just because of the clouds?!... We left Canada on a night flight across the Atlantic and had quite the lay-over in London Heathrow. Because airports are generally quite dull structures we decided to take the underground train to Piccadilly Circus to explore ... read more

Some pictures from Dave's York Factory working visit. This place is a truly awesome place! Set in the middle of nowhere with a haunting ambience, it stands as a lasting monument to the brave souls of the Hudson's Bay Company... I was lucky enough to spend two weeks here during July and had a lot of time to explore the area...... read more

Hola amigos para la ultima vez de este viaje! Panama City is full of juxtapositions! Old, ruined buildings standing next to modern glass fronted high-rises, millionaires in mansions surrounded by slums and shacks. Wealthy businessmen working along side the poverty-striken lower-class, fancy new highways that merge into pot-holed and litter-strewn tracks... It's an amazing place! The skyline of mighty skyscrapers and the ocean is a startling view, they nickname the city "Mini Manhattan" or "Miami of the South", both names are fitting but we still called it Panama City. When we arrived in the Casco Viejo district of the city we wandered for quite a while, hauling our backpacks from hostel to hostel and hotel to hotel. Many places were full because of the Easter holiday. Because of our style of just rocking up to a ... read more

Hola. We stumbled upon more wonderful places in Panama. The hiking trails in the other countries of Central America were riddled with tales of robberies and muggings, and guides were always being recommended. We wanted the independence of not having a guide and enjoying the trails and nature at our own pace - Panama has allowed us this. Thanks Panama! It is never too late to get in a hike or two and we both needed the exercise! We pretty much spent all of our days hiking. It was perfect! Santa Fe... The Santa Fe region has some awesome hiking trails. We hiked to many waterfalls, through thick cloud forests and farmland and enjoyed the very fresh mountain air. We were accompanied by wildlife on all of our hikes in the area. The scenery was gorgeous. ... read more

Hola It is little wonder that the expression "As delightful as a border post" has never been coined... The Costa Rica - Panama post of Paso Canoas was of course charmless and we had little reason to hang out there. We stayed only long enough to have a dashing glance at our passport stamps and to cherish the fact that this was the last overland border crossing of our trip...Ah! Hola Panama! What a feeling of relief as we rocked up to Cerro Punta and it´s clean, fresh mountain air, beautiful farm land and friendly people. At 1800 metres above sea level, we had forgotten what it was like to feel the cold! Our long sleeves and toques got their use after weeks in the backpacks. Shortly after arriving we heard a voice yelling from a ... read more
