Hi Everyone!
I'm a student from Winona State University in Winona, Minnesota with a double major in Nursing and Spanish. Last summer was my first travel abroad experience in Spain. It definitely put the travel bug in me-this summers plans are South America-BOLIVIA! Interning in a Pediatric Health Clinic right in La Paz.
Hope you enjoyed last summer, and stay tuned for adventures to come :)

The last two weeks working in the hospital have been such a mind-blowing experience. I have been looking back through the pictures and now realize how incredible of an experience it has all been. The third week rotation, I moved to a different hospital-Arco Iris. WOW. This hospital was way nicer than Hospital del Nino. Just in the fact it was newer and not JUST pediatrics. While at this hospital, I followed a resident of gynecology. It actually helped my last semester at Mayo was partly gyno, so I had a little bit of an idea what to expect. This guy was awesome. We did rounds, entirely on pregnant women. They were all 17 or younger, which was hard for me, but he said these young women WANT their children, and promised it was a good ... read more

Well, the group made it happen. With lots of planning, more modes of transportation in 3 days than I have ever used and the most incredible sight I have seen in my life, we visited Machu Picchu this weekend with a little foreign weekend getaway! With of course lil hiccups and funny situations along the way as usual. Note: I had been REALLY REALLY sick all week, and it was questionable for me to even go—up until about an hour before. My sister and I’s quote to each other was the defining factor “You have no sense of adventure.” Kind of a reverse psychology that gets us to buck up and GO! :) It worked, and I am forever going to thank her for that! We began our adventure from La Paz on Thursday evening with ... read more

After this weekend excursion, I now am aware of the Wisconsin Winter Strength I have. This was one of the most amazing weekend adventures I have ever had (I feel like I say that a lot) It was a true test of “roughin it” in harsh cold conditions, but for me-the sights trumped it. Uyuni Salt Flat Tour 3 days-2 nights The group loaded onto a double decker bus for an 11 hour ride into Uyuni (southwestern area of Bolivia) We were scheduled to arrive at 7:00am, and were told our tour company would be waiting for us with a warm office to wait in until our tour began at 10:00. Well, shocking surprise #1 we arrived at 5:00 am! I think it is almost unheard of for Bolivians to be early. Obviously, this early, our ... read more

Second week rotation I was placed on my own with Doctora Tejerina in the Neumologia unit (respiratory/lung) What an AWESOME week!!!!! The energetic and friendly Dcta with black patent leather stilettos and Fireflies by Owl City as her ringtone, lead me down to her office talking a million words per minute in Spanish we get to her office and she looks at me and smiles. I just kind of nervously laugh, and ever since then, we have been the perfect pair. Monday, Wednesday, and Friday were “consultados” in her office. Similar to what I had last week. This lady brought a chair behind her desk, right next to her chair, and asked “do you write in Spanish?” Through the consults, I would take an assessment on the patient; listen to their lungs and heart, and then ... read more

Disclaimer: This last weekend I took over 300 pictures. The pictures did not capture the brilliance or magnificence…so I will try my best with words. No promises. After this weekend I have a WHOLE new perspective on South America and the beauty. While living in La Paz I have experienced the difference in urban life; the hustle and bustle of the busy city, dodging traffic with their screeching horns, bartering in the jam packed markets, or sniffing out the light-fingered strangers. BUT, with this weekend it was as if I was picked up, and dropped in the exact center of tranquility. We all decided to splurge and get a private bus. And by splurge I mean $30 a piece-beyond worth it in my opinion. This private bus turned out to be our red beast! A 9-passenger ... read more

I began my month of pediatric rotations in Hospital Del Nino on a general pediatric medical floor, following a Nephrologist (kidney doctor) Doctora Bocangel. A very typical, bubbly pediatric doctor who was an awesome educator and communicator! This state-run hospital treats patients from all over the country and is one of the largest and oldest in the area. We were told, because of the altitude, and the higher pressure (not necessarily that lack of oxygen) this is a beneficial hospital to stop many infections and diseases from progressing. This hospital has an incredible team of doctors! EVERY single day, a team of at least 10 would visit and give report on each patient. The team included: 2-3 attendings (some of the most intelligent people I have ever met) 2 residents (who would present each case, and ... read more

Futbol…a religion for most South Americans, and there is no exception to Bolivians. It was cute the way my family’s face lit up when I said I liked soccer and even played. I definitiely had to specify my skills were limited to secondary school. Nonetheless, it has been fun talking about which teams are in the world cup, who we like, etc. So it was pretty much a given I needed to see a soccer game while here. My host Dad is a die-hard Wilstermann fan which is a small club team from where he grew up. He was so excited to tell us about the big game on Sunday-his team vs. the La Paz club team. “Much like suicide for other teams” he explained, all games played in La Paz are extremely difficult for the ... read more

The South American Adventure begins! After getting, in my opinion, more than enough sleep Friday night, I hit the streets to explore! As I left, I made sure to clear the places on the map I intended to go with Jorge (host brother) and he assured me a safe expedition. I wandered down Sanchez Lima to the first plaza on my agenda-Plaza Avaroa. This has turned into a very popular meeting spot and is a very busy place. Like Spain, many vendors and stray dogs-but still could be a place for a peacefull afternoon of "cultural observation" From there, I headed up to "Mirador el Monticulo" and it literally was UP. Extremely steeeeep cobblestone streets brought me to a beautiful lookout of the city! Just my luck, I happened to stumble upon a wedding!!! I remember ... read more

Hi everyone! I hit the Bolivian land this morning at about 5:15am right in La Paz! Just a quick update that I am safe, healthy (besides the shortness of breath) and oh so EXCITED! The taxi drive into the city (which I learned has about 2 million people right in the central part-by my apartment) was absolutely breathtaking! (literally hahaha) I have another AWESOME host family who were so welcoming even at 5 in the morning. 2 Parents and 2 children (boy-Jorge who just graduated from an engineering university and is working on his thesis before he starts work and Claudia who is an architect but instead has chosen to teach english to kids) The parents own their own business and both work during the day. For Andy: The food-WONDERFUL! Claudia made a boiled chicken and ... read more

It was really hard to believe my summer study abroad finished so soon-not without one more hoorah filled with new towns, new sights, and a new experience all together. I finished my finals on Friday, July 31st and the very next day flew from Granada to Madrid. That was THE WORST goodbye I have ever had. It was not easy boarding that plane-but knowing I had some special people on the other side of that flight helped me through. I had an interesting flight to Madrid. In the middle of the trip I heard a sound similar to a lawnmower backfire-and the flight attendants all ran to the back of the plane. I am hear to tell the tale-meaning we DID land safely, however the heart rate was increased. When we did land, the whole cabin ... read more
