Howdy from Hoi An! After opting out of another 22 hour journey up the Vietnamese coast, we swapped dusty roads for clear blue skies and jetsetted our way out of Saigon. Next stop was Hoi An - a quaint coastal town famous for kitting people out in sharp suits, warm winter jackets and, well, just about anything really! You ask for any design and they will make it for you that very day! Of course even in super cheap South East Asia such activities were a stretch too far for our modest backpacker needs. After fine dining in Saigon and a flight North we were experiencing our own mini economic downturn - and this is one recession we couldn't spend our way out of! We touched down in Danang after dark before grabbing our bags and ... read more

Hello all, Well we finally forced ourselves to leave beach living behind and set off to another country - Vietnam! We were looking forward to exploring a new country and I was très excited to catch up with my frieeeeeeeend from home Kate, who's been living out here for the past six months. Another long bus journey later and a hairy moment at the border (rewind to Vietnam embassy incident!) we arrived in Ho Chi Minh City and were so happeeeee to see a friendly face from home!! Over the next couple of days we would be staying in Kate’s very swanky apartment and lapping up such delights as nutella, pizza, pasta, irn-bru, chocolate éclairs from the bakers and lots more! We were loving the home comforts of this little expat community, I even got a ... read more

‘Ello ‘ello On leaving Phnom Penh we made our way to Southern Cambodia. We headed straight for Otres beach, hoping to find the beach paradise we had been looking for since arriving in South East Asia. Things didn’t look too promising as our Tuk Tuk driver took us down a dirt track road that appeared to lead to nowhere. However we soon arrived in an area with no roads, no cars and few people – only clear turquoise sea, white sands and a few wooden beach shacks. With our room only ten meters from the beach, we had found our own little piece of paradise! We spent the next few days doing, well nothing really! We soaked up the sun, had a dip in the sea and enjoyed some delicious khmer food. It was also the ... read more

After a long journey from Siem Riep we arrived into what felt like a very manic, claustrophobic city. First on our agenda was to make our way to the Vietnamese Embassy to hand in our passports for a visa. After this we were taken to what is described in our guide book as a romantic, peaceful area – and I’m sure if you can get past the smell of sewage it would be! Already we were not off on the right foot with Phnom Penh. On this note we decided we didn’t want to stay here for 3 days waiting for our visa to be processed. 40mins after handing our passports in we were back at the embassy to reclaim them. With no visa the ‘official’ tried to charge us $40 dollars to get them back!! ... read more

Hello all! Today we set out to explore the Temples of Angkor - a UNESCO world heritage site boasting over one thousand temples in varying states of repair. Our original plan was to get up super early and watch the sunrise over Angkor Wat (the largest and most famous temple) but after a few drinks the night before we decided it would be best to ignore the alarm! However, after finally dragging ourselves out of bed, we hired some bikes and eventually hit the road out to Angkor! After cycling for an hour or so we arrived at the Angkor Wat temple - an absolutely huge stone structure surrounded by a vast flooded moat - kodak moment if ever there was one! After resisting the urge to nudge each other into the murky moat water we ... read more

Hello hello, So after a few days of relaxation (as I say travelling is tough work) on Ko Chang, we set off for Cambodia. After an all day bus journey, we arrived late at the border crossing town of Aranya Pathet and were reluctant to cross the border as Siem Reap (our destination) was still a further 2 hour journey. As always a Tuk Tuk driver was at our service and insisted that he take us to the border. We are on our way, then all of a sudden we turn off onto a dark side street where a little man appears from nowhere shouting "WELCOME TO CAMBODIA!!" - mmm... nice try pal! Despite their hardest efforts to convince us that at the other end of this dark road lay Cambodia we decided to turn back ... read more

After a few crazy days spent in Bangkok, we made our way to the Islands! Quite a treat as we have spent little time indulging in beach life since we have been away. Again we travelled with the locals on a bus, taxi, ferry journey - at this point i might add that our £3 bus ticket provided shear luxury with snacks and cold drinks being brought to us throughout the trip, the Megabus could learn a trick or two!! On arrival the free spirited, taking each day as it comes way of thinking gave us a big smack in the puss when we couldn't find anywhere to stay on the Island. After trawling around for a while, a bar women must have seen the desperation on our faces and offered us a room - bonus!! ... read more

Sawatdii (hello) from Bangkok!! After 17 hours of flying we arrived in Bangkok bleary eyed and where suddenly awoken with the hustling bustling circus that seems to be Bangkok. Already we were feeling a million light years away from Africa! We managed to navigate our way through all the madness and arrived at our hotel, which after a month of camping was pure luxury - hot shower,tv, huuuge bed (with pillows), a fridge. The list goes on, we were loving the home comforts and as much as we miss Motel 6, this was absolute bliss! We spent our three days in Bangkok wondering around and taking in the Thai way of live. We quickly learned that street food is the way to go, If it's good enough for the locals... Delicious phad thai for a mere ... read more

Happy new year!! After three days in Cape Town it was time to wind our way down the Western Cape and explore the Garden route. The flashpacker experience that was Ashanti Hostel was left behind as we reaquainted ourselves with cooking out a truck, makeshift toilets, sleeping in a wet tent and all the many other delights of the camping experience! First stop was Mossel Bay - after several hours on the bus we were keen to get off and explore. Unfortunately we were greeted by lashing rain - quite an adjustment after getting used to the stifling heat of the Namib desert! After a quick scout around we were all a bit damp and keen to drive are way out of the grey clouds - not that Claire seemed to aware of the weather as ... read more

Hello from Cape Town! We made the short trip down from Stellenbosch a few days back - our last official leg of the trip! We arrived at our hostel Ashanti Lodge - very flash with amazing views of Table Mountain from the bar. Without too much hanging around we thought we would make the most of the day, and the weather, and head for the mountain. We took the cable car up which, to our surprise was absolutely rapid! By the time we had got to the top and our ears had stopped popping we had time to savour the stunning view. We had some ice cream and took in Cape Town from above - has there ever been a more perfect setting for a city?! Claire looked into an abseil down but unfortunately it was ... read more
