As we reached the top of Dundas Street and turned onto George street, looked down on to the gardens and then across to the Water of Leith, we realised we were finally home....Except that we wern't, not yet anyway. We still had one week left of our global adventure and had arrived in the city of Dunedin. "The Edinburgh of the south" is its nickname - and we could see why, the entire city seemed to be some long lost prototype of the Scottish capital. Apparently when settlers from bonnie Scotland arrived on the Otago peninsula some 150 years ago they got to work on building themsleves a whole new Edinburgh. Hence the city - dunEDIN. After getting to grips with the history of this bustling student town, we found a spot to call home for ... read more

Our first stop in Wanaka was the tourist Info centre, where as with most places we needed to find out where we could park the camper for the night. Jamesy returned minus this info and armed with a bundle of skydiving leaflets. Little over an hour later we were agreeing to death as a result of this activity and signing our lives away, ahhh... Before we knew it we were suited and booted and taking in some of the most beautiful scenery we have seen so far on the trip - the snow capped Mount Aspiring and Lake Wanaka made for a stunning backdrop! Then all of a sudden I am sitting on the edge of the plane and hurtling into thin air, A-maaaaaazing!! The most surreal feeling ever, how can I expalin what it feels ... read more

By now we were already well accustomed to the stunning scenery of Kiwi land. Turning many a corner, letting out a big sigh and muttering "wow" was becoming a pretty common occurence. So as we boarded the ferry taking across across the Cook Strait we really should have known that the Marlborough Sounds, the gateway to New Zealands south, was probably going to blow our socks off! It didn't disappoint - rolling green hills descending into endless channels of clear blue water. It was also getting bloody cold. As this country gets more beautiful our own faces seem to be losing their silky summer shine at a worrying rate. Besides the adverse weather conditions a diet of bread, pasta and rice seems to be taking its toll. For those greeting us on our return be warned ... read more

Landing in Auckland we were without doubt the two most happy excitable backpackers on the planet! We had enjoyed Oz but had been craving a new challenge - so we were more than ready to get our teeth tucked into Kiwi country!! First stop was New Zealand's largest city - Auckland. After arriving late the previous night we were up bright n breezy to go and pick up our new campervan. Wow - this was a belter, spray painted from tip to toe in the smurfs! After driving about town looking super cool in our new abode we went for a wonder around the city centre. Apparently Auckland gets a pretty bad rap from most visitors but we thought it was not too shabby! After taking a few wrong turns we ended up in the beautiful ... read more

After basically spending the past 6 weeks on the beach we decided it was time for a change of scene and made a beeline for Cape Tribulation, the rain forest of Northern Queensland. Where World Heritage meets World Heritage in the form of the Great Barrier Reef and Rain forest (a wee Jamesy fact there!). It was indeed stunning but after camping by the sea for the night we left Cape Trib as there isn't too much to do, except try some tasty ice-cream and take in the rain forest sights! On our way back to Cairns we spent a couple of days in Port Douglas, we loved it right away and it is definitely one of our favourite places on the coast. So much so that within being there for only a few hours, Jamesy ... read more

The road up to Brissy was an emotional one - we had just said our goodbyes to our travel buddys for the last time. So long Tina and Paul - enjoy the next 7 months!! Anyway once the tears had dried, and there was no way we could blame it on the rain around these parts, it was time to hit Queensland's capital. We checked in to Brisbane City Backpackers and, after somehow squeezing into the tightest parking space in town (even I had a go getting us in!) we went for a wonder into town. The centre of the action was around Queen Street - there was a smashing market selling all sorts of local produce so we went around munching as many freebies as we could!! We also discovered Brisbane has a massive public ... read more

It was a hop skip and a jump up the coast to meet our fellow travellers Tina and Paul!! We were looking forward to catching up on their tales of the North as we are heading in opposite directions. Our chosen meeting point was Surfers Paradise - unfortunately there weren't many surfers and it ain't much of a paradise, with all the high rise buildings towering over the beach. We hit the beach to catch some rays and rustled up some fajitas for tea and just as we were settling down for the night word gets round the car park that the police are on the prowl for campervanners parked next to the beach... And so begins a wild goose chase for somewhere to park our Syd - along with five other campers! In the morning ... read more

New South Wales does beaches like Bond does women - its nailed the age old challenge of matching quality with quantity! Wherever we go the sky is blue, the sand is white and the waves are MASSIVE! And if thats not enough with just a little effort you can usually find your very own hidden retreat to enjoy all three of these holiday-in-the-sun-staples. After taking in the stunning Blue Mountains it was time to get back on the most famous backpacker trail on this planet - surely doing Australias east coast in a "campa" must rival skinny dipping and skydiving in the "gotta do before you die" stakes?! By now we had well and truly settled into our (equally vital) campervan roles - Claire: the determined driver with a mere 2500 kilometres of unknown Ozzy roads ... read more

As we stand in Sydney Harbour both the Opera House and Harbour Bridge scream "Welcome to the other side of the world" - amazing!! We were warned that both these sights could be a major disappointment, but this definitely wasn't the case! These are the iconic Aussie images and we enjoyed them in all their glory as the sun set over the harbour! There was a great buzz about the place and whilst all the high fliers enjoyed the flashy harbour restaurants and bars we embarked on a grueling two hour hunt for a cheap bite to eat - no such thing exists, oh how we took the 60p street food in Asia for granted! Just as we are about to give up and have yet another Maccy D's we came across an Irish pub with ... read more

Australia already??! How'd that happen?? When planning this trip and even throughout our time away the Australia leg has always seemed way in the distance and here we are! How time flies. We were a little sad to say farewell to Asia but we were looking forward to getting back to some sort of normality after the constant madness and adrenaline rush which Asia had to offer! So we said our goodbyes to my Pops and hopped aboard our flight Down Under - where we had a toast to Asia and making it to the half way point in our trip; still bestest pals, with a million amazing memories to take to our next stop! Our first stop in Oz was Melbourne. Whilst in India we absolutely loved staying with local families and getting a feel ... read more
