Arrived in Livinstone yesterday.. wanted to take the 8am bus.. but woke up at 5am somehow.. so what the heck.. pulled myself out and went to the bus station and took the 6am bus.. bus ride is 6hrs.. including stops along the way.. and cost 75,000 kwachas (1usd=4000kwachas).. so i guess travelling in southern africa is not that cheap as well.. Arrived in Livingstone around 1230pm.. went straight to Jollyboys Backpackers.. wow.. this is the nicest backpacker hostel i've ever ever seen! dorm bed cost just US$6 - 10 a night.. pending on dorm size.. and they have a swimming pool.. jacuzzi (not heated.. aw.. c'mon.. what u expect for 6 bucks?).. free pool table.. free ping pong.. too bad internet is not free.. haha.. bluddy nice environment with lots of sitting cushions.. and they ... read more

Forgot to add in that for those of you that have been trying to contact me for the past few days.. Reception in Malawi is shaky.. you dun get reception at times... and Singtel does not have roaming agreements with the telcos in Zambia.. so, you won't be able to contact me till Zimbabwe.. which is this Saturday... not sure about Zim.. if still no roaming, then Tues i'll be in Botswana.. And another shit thing.. the data in my 8GB flash disk is corrupted!! i think i tried to plug it into the computer at the internet cafe earlier.. w/o realizing they using Win98.. and then a msg popped up to say that "your disk is not formatted.. you want to format it now?" horrors of horrors!! so i came to another place... and they ... read more

Good news and bad news! Good news is as above stated in the title.. bad news is that I won't be able to catch Mr Melvin Ng leaving for his Beijing posting in mid-June... Was initially thinking if i can't get the namibian visa, then i'd probably head south from Zambia to Zimbabwe and then straight into South Africa.. and then I'd probably arrive home somewhere before the 16th, when Mel will be flying off.. so looks like my return date is still set on the 26th.. Sorry Mel.. but i'd be visiting you some time in BJ i guess.. Huang Zong! After two long days on the road.. I'm now in Lusaka.. Crossing the Malawi-Zambian border is relatively ok.. but I think the Zambian officers are a bit more picky.. and can make things difficult.. ... read more

Am at Lilongwe now.. the capital of Malawi.. Internet's ok.. about 400 malawi qwachas / hr (1USD=145malkwacha) Just spent 4 days a long Lake Malawi.. not too bad.. Lake Malawi is a pretty nice lake.. it's kind of amazing to see such a big body of water.. with crashing waves.. and it does not taste salty!! Basically did some kayaking... swimming against the waves.. and did my first freshwater altitude (475m above sealevel only) dive! whoo.. something new to add in my dive log.. basically just saw a lot of boulders.. and this species of fish called chiclids or something.. they lay eggs and fertilize them in mouth.. and when fish hatch, they just swim out of mummy's mouth.. too bad didn't get to see this... visibility is bad at only 5-8m.. still enjoy saltwater ... read more

Just returned from Zanzibar to Dar Es Salaam on the early ferry this morning, headed straight for the Zambian high commission for them to stick the visa sticker on my passport.. and am now in the internet cafe waiting for them to complete the arduous task.. I've also received my Malawi visa last friday.. so at least visa is taken care of for the next 2 countries.. will try to get the Namibia and Botswana ones in Lusaka, Zambia.. Malawi Zambia visa cost 25,000Tsh (1USD = 1280 tanzanian shillings).. Will spend another night in Kipepeo Campsite on the south beaches, and will embark for Malawi tomorrow.. spend about 5-6 days there, before crossing the border again to Zambia.. First day on Zanzibar.. took the 10am ferry from Dar to Zanzibar.. took about 2.5hrs.. the ferry ... read more

but maybe not for me.. maybe cos i've been to Lamu.. and frankly.. first impresion.. Lamu's much better.. Lamu's a quieter more serene town with only one car and hundreds of donkeys... and Zanzibar is very developed.. many cars, many big roads.. hell, you get to see a container port when you get off the ferry! maybe that's becos i'm still in town.. going to do some diving around the waters nearby tomorrow.. and then will head up to Nungwi beach.. where many people go.. and where many people say the waters are simply beautiful... i'll be doing another dive around Mnemba Atoll (suposedly world famous).. and whee.. you can do drift diving there.. looking forward to that.. just recovered from a heavy bout of homesickness.. i guess when i'm travelling on the road and ... read more

Decided to use another post to put up the photos for the 2 days we spent in serengeti - 14th & 15th May... 2 regrets from the photos.. ok, not regrets.. points for future improvements: 1) Never buy cheap lenses - the cheap 70-300mm (S$200+) didn't do well in the photos.. the colours just dun come out... and pictures not as crisp.. will invest in better lenses for my next trip that may use telephoto lenses.. 2) When you are in a jeep, and the engine's running.. even tho the jeep may be stationary.. but there is still some vibrations that you need to factor in your photo taking.. so a shutter speed of 1/40 just doesn't cut it even tho you have steady hands! should be more kiasu and do shutter speeds faster than ... read more
