After hanging in Kostrzyn, I came home to Wroclaw for a few days before taking the train to Krakow. Narina and Marshall hopped on the train as it passed through Gliwice and the three of us headed to the former Polish capital. Krakow was painfully cold for the 3 days we were there, but we still managed to see the sights and have some fun. Sadly, my camera battery died so I didn't take as many pictures as I hoped. Narina and I decided to get our first Polish haircuts in Krakow. After finding a proper frzjer (salon), the hair was washed and cut and we were both pleased. I was a touch worried b/c Narina's hairdresser was quite old and didn't speak any English - but that didn't stop her from talking in Polish nonstop ... read more

Christmas in Poland

Merry Christmas from Poland! On Wednesday, Dec. 24th, I took the train from Wroclaw to Kostrzyn Nad Odra to meet Rick and Jakub, 2 of Bri's college friends. Jakub is Polish (went to high school and college in the US, now works in DC) and his family still lives in Poland. Jakub's family was very welcoming and I enjoyed my few days in their home. The train was quite full on the journey to Kostrzyn - I had to stand next to the door (cold!) for the first half of the 5 hour trip - but I got a seat after a number of passengers got off in Zielona Gora. The big Christmas celebration happens on the 24th in Poland. Dinner consists of 12 dishes (not meat), including 5 fish specialties. The Konysz menu consisted of ... read more

Polish Partyin'

Tis the season for some parties and snowy getaways. I attended my first Polish birthday party early in the month. Michal (Mee-how) turned 23 and hosted a great party. For a Polish birthday, the bday boy/girl is responsible for paying for everyone else's drinks at a bar. They also supply snacks and are to ensure all guests have a lovely time. So I announced that I would NOT be hosting a Polish birthday party. No way am I buying drinks for everyone else on my birthday. Poor Michal was stressed making sure everyone was having fun on HIS birthday. The Speed school held a teachers' weekend get away in snowy Szcyrk (please note the lack of vowels). The resort was about 7 hours away from Wroclaw and we picked up about 50 other teachers from the ... read more

Thanksgiving in Poland

Happy (belated) Thanksgiving! I spent my Thanksgiving day at work... but I did enjoy some cheese pierogi and gelato in honor of the day. It has gotten cold in Poland - We've had a few snowfalls, but nothing sticks. The sun sets at about 4 pm, which isn't exactly uplifting. The aerial pictures of Wroclaw were taken from the top of a church bell tower on a very windy Polish Independence day (Nov. 11). Happy 90th, Poland! As it turns out, my grandmother, Dorothy "Mamaw" Trotter, is a few months older than Poland itself. Of course the Poles have been around a long time, but Russia, Germany and Austro-Hungary had their greedy hands in these lands for many moons. On the Independence day there was a strange parade - a mix of horses and motorcycles, neither ... read more

Halloween in Poland

Due to harassment from someone who will remain nameless (Bri Keeney), here is the much anticipated Polish Halloween/election installment of my travel blog. To answer a few questions: NO, the Poles don't celebrate Halloween. The Poles celebrate All Saints' Day on Nov. 1. The vast majority of Poles spend the day with family traveling to the cemeteries where relatives are buried. This also meant that all the stores and restaurants were closed all weekend, which would have been handy to know beforehand. NO, I didn't bring a costume with me to Poland so I didn't have one to wear on Halloween. I did not think it would be a prudent choice to pack a suitcase full of props, costumes and practical jokes. YES, the Poles were interested in the election and for the most part were ... read more

The (not) castles of Wroclaw

One of the questions in the Callan book I teach out of asks the students "Are there any castles in the town where you live?" The students ALWAYS answer no. Oh, really? I think these pictures tell a different story... And the much anticipated pictures of my castle - I live on the 3rd floor of a 5-floor block of flats. I live right off the Rynek, behind the Diesel store. Most of the tenants in my building are university students (or old ladies with annoying dogs whose barks echo around the building at 7 am, AWESOME). My flat is a studio and has everything I need - which is what people say when they live in weirdo apartments. My land-lady doesn't speak much English. Every time I see her she asks if I speak German ... read more

I finally have internet connection in my flat! After many frantic gestures and phrases in broken English and Polish, I managed to get the wireless password from my neighbors. So, welcome to my travel blog. After only a few days in Wroclaw, my employer, Speed School of English, whisked me away to teacher training in Gliwice, Poland - about 3 hours away from Wroclaw, by train. The other new teachers in Gliwice are a lot of fun and I am sure we will do some traveling together in the future. But after spending so much time in Gliwice, I started to forget that I didn't live there... So it is nice to be back. Here are some pictures of the people and sites in Gliwice (pronounced "Gli-Veet-sa").... read more
