After leaving a rainy 4000 islands, we reached the border to be greeted with sunshine and lots of queues. Eventually we were stamped into Cambodia and after a bit more waiting we were on our way to Kampong Cham. We were dropped on a random street in Kampong Cham and jumped onto the back of a couple of motos to complete the journey to our hotel. We had a relaxed evening and took advantage of the cheap wine on offer. The following day we took a walk round the town and enjoyed looking through the market and at the many temples around. The following day we were heading to Siem Reap, so got up early to enjoy the sunrise over the river whilst we had breakfast. We arrived in SIem Reap and enjoyed a G&T whilst ... read more

We left Nong Khai for the border crossing with Laos. After enjoying a nice queue and paying for our first ever visa, we were dropped off in Vientiane. We found some where to stay and went for a look around the local area. The following day we went to see Vientiane’s oldest temple which housed an impressive amount of bronze Buddhas. We then visited the Laos version of the arc de triomphe. From which we could see amazing views of the city. In the evening we wandered around the night market before wandering over to the gargantuan statue of Chao Anouvong, the last king of the Vientiane monarchy. A day or so later we jumped aboard a minibus to Vang Vieng. After crossing the bamboo bridge and finding a hostel we wandered around. This little town ... read more

We left Penang and got a ferry to Butterworth, where we waited for our train to Bangkok. A quick stop at the border and we were soon in Thailand, enjoying a Thai curry and a beer, before our seats where turned into beds and we woke up in Bangkok. After spending about eight hours in Bangkok we boarded another overnight train to Nong Khai. We arrived, not particularly refreshed, and bundled into a Tuk tuk which took us to the Mut Mee Hostel. After a much needed shower and rest we visited the hostel bar where Stuart played guitar and drums with a group of Thais until it was time to go to bed. On New Years Eve we hired pushbikes and cycled through the town until we reached the sculpture park. There were many large ... read more

We left Cameron Highlands for Penang, via a short stopover in Ipoh. We managed to find our hostel easily and settled into the Penang lifestyle by having late night noodles from one of the many street vendors. We spent our first sightseeing day looking round the local area, visiting Fort Cornwallis, which is built on the Cape where the city’s founder (Captain Francis Light) landed. We also saw some beautiful government buildings, a church and some temples. Our next outing took us to the Snake Temple, where there are live snakes on the alters. Whilst the concept sounded interesting it was a little disappointing as all the snakes were very lethargic and it was hard to tell if they were real! The following day we went to see two temples, the Burmese Dharmikarama and the Thai ... read more

After stuffing our faces with noodles for breakfast we hopped aboard a bus from Kuala Lumpur to the Cameron Highlands. We were welcomed by heavy rain, which was a nice change to the hot and sticky temperatures we had had elsewhere in South East Asia. Having arrived fairly late there was little we could do but eat and get to bed ready for the next day. The following day we had a lazy morning, then set out to find the tourist information centre to get a map of the many jungle trails that are around the Cameron Highlands. We had originally planned to walk to Sam Poh Temple (buddist), however the information on the map said it was a three hour walk and thinking we would not be able to get to there and back before ... read more

We left Singapore after a hot and sweaty walk to the bus station. A few hours, buses and stamps in the passport later we arrived in Kuala Lumpur. Eventually we made it through the markets, where we were offered numerous DVDs, watches and t-shirts until we found our hostel. We spent the first night getting information from a local who happened to run the bar on the roof top. He showed us a few of the sights including the Reggae Bar (that doesn't play reggae), the Reggae Mansion Rooftop Bar and the early morning/late night noodle stall. The tour finished around 5am and the next day was spent digesting what we had learnt. Having fully digested all the infromation we went the following day to the Batu Caves. Where a 140ft high Murugan statue guards the ... read more

December 4th 2011

Our first day in Singapore was spent waiting for our bag to play catch up and trying to stay awake. We were staying in Little India, so spent some of the day walking around, trying some of the spicy cuisine on offer and admiring the mosques and Hindu temples. The next day we were lucky enough to be taken around the town by an old friend of Stuart’s parents. He picked us up from our hostel, took us lunch/dinner and to see the Christmas lights in Orchard Road, as well as a drive through China Town. The following day and feeling a bit less jet lagged we made our way over to the Colonial area and to the Asian Civilisations Museum. We got to see lots of statues, weapons, jewelry and artworks from all over the ... read more

We arrived in Sydney slightly confused, by both the loss of time and the fact that everyone spoke English. It took a little while before we stopped saying gracias instead of thank you. We managed to get through customs, even though they questioned why we were only staying for two days. We were soon on our way to our hostel in Collaroy Beach. The next morning we woke up at reasonable time so decided we would go into Sydney and see a couple of the sights. We got a bus to Manly, where we laughed at the names of the shops, such as Manly Mexican. Then got the “World famous Manly ferry” into Sydney, from which we got to see the Sydney Opera House and the Sydney Harbor Bridge. We then visited the Governors house and ... read more

After leaving our hostel in Buenos Aires we headed for the port to catch our ferry. Luckily we left plenty of time because we showed up to the wrong one to begin with. Some minor problems later and our voyage to Uruguay had begun. Our first stop was Colonia where, impressed by its laid back feel, we intended to rest and spend the following day enjoying the sights. However a shortage of beds and a glut of other tourists meant that we ended up traveling on to Montevideo a day earlier than expected. During our short stop in Montevideo we went to have a look at the plazas and buildings of the Ciudad Vieja (old city). Unfortunately we didn’t find all that much to hold our interest and soon travelled onwards to Punta del Diablo on ... read more
