So we left Cusco and travelled 6 hours by bus to Puno which is even colder and higher than Cusco but it seemed nice enough. To be honest we didn´t see a lot of it as we arrived in the afternoon and were then to head off early to next day to Lake Titicaca, the world´s largest high-altitude lake (it covers 8400 sq km). First we travelled by boat to the floating islands made of reeds, these are man-made islands which are topped up each month with fresh reeds otherwise they would eventually sink. They last for approximately 20-25 years and several families live on each. It was interesting to find out how they live, they literally live off the land, hunting birds and fish and they also keep guniea pigs but they had all been ... read more

Well it´s been a very long time since I´ve blogged so this is going to be a long one! I left off in Peru as we were about to head to Cusco. We flew from Lima in a tiny plane (much to my horror) but arrived unscathed in Cusco in the early morning. At 3300 metres above sea level, the altitude hits you right away, I felt like I´d downed a bottle of red after getting off the plane! We spent the next two days aclimatising as we were all feeling pretty horrible from altitude sickness but got to know Cusco as quite a cool city with good restaurants, bars and markets. There are lots of tourists here as it is the gateway to the Inca Trail. Unfortunately I came down with a head cold the ... read more

We've been in Peru for almost a week now, we crossed the border from Ecuador to meet our new guide and were taken to our first stop which was a fishing village called Zorritos. We stayed in a gorgeous beach resort which consisted of rustic huts right on the beach. We had traditional Peruvian cuisine cooked for us and hung out on the beach for a day and a half. We were happy to have a break from transit as the trip has been pretty hectic so far. After only the one night there we boarded yet another bus and headed to Chiclayo for one night and then down to Trujullo, a town in the middle of the desert which is famous for it's ruins of the Sipan people. The ruins were a bit crap but ... read more

If you have a fear of heights then South America is not the best place to come to. I´ve spent a lot of time on some of the highest and windest roads I´ve ever seen in the last few days and my fear of heights hasn´t gotten any better! We left Puyo to travel to Riobamba for a flying visit of one night then straight off to Alousi where we rode the Devil´s Nose train which gave us spectacular views of the countryside. It´s supposed to be feat of engineering or something but I wasn´t really listening, I was too busy hanging onto my seat trying to look out the window without freaking out. My very helpful room mate Kate took the window seat and would explain whether we were high enough to either roll down ... read more

Well I finally arrived in South America after a nightmare trip over here! My first flight was delayed due to the ash cloud, then I missed my next flight the next day due to my stupid travel agent booking the wrong time and then a further delay on my next flight. I think I was pretty lucky to get over here at all so I was happy to just catch my tour before they left. So after nearly three days of travelling I arrived in Quito, Ecuador. A representative from my tour company came to meet me at the airport which I was grateful for as Quito was much more dangerous than I thought. Loads of tourists get mugged there so I didn´t leave the hotel other than with a big group for dinner. I met ... read more
