Having packed up ready to leave Great Aussie Backpackers we caught the ferry from Circular Quay to Manly Beach, so called because when it was discovered it was populated with aboriginees who, standing topless, looked very 'manly', so we had high expectations for the 'views'! However, as per usual with our beach trips, the weather was not on our side and we spent a rather chilly few hours huddled on the beach determined to sit it out! But we soon decided that fish and chips were a better option!! The sun came out just as we were leaving and so we enjoyed the views back into Sydney taking yet more opera house snaps!! Then the time finally came to board the overnight bus....we were a little worried as all the seats had been allocated and Elin ... read more

The Hunter Valley had finally taken its toll and at the discovery of yet more rain we decided to stay in bed and slept most of the day (until approx. 4pm!!) before waking to discover we had missed the free sizzling sausages and so had to settle for tuna jackets! (Becky has dropped a bombshell in saying that they have gone down in her estimations!) An early night was definately required as the sun is meant to be shining tomorrow so we'll be heading to Manly beach before enduring the overnight bus to Byron Bay............. read more

Today we were meant to be going to the Blue Mountains but at 7am having looked outside to find yet more torrential rain Camilla and Elin forefitted their deposits and stayed in bed whilst Becky decided to brave it and headed off. Whilst Becky was in the mountains (which due to the weather were not even visible) Camilla and Elin went to the Sydney Opera House open day and explored all the concert halls, and even went backstage. Unfortunately the opera house were not aware of our talents and we weren't invited to perform but we did get to see some performances and decided that missing the Blue Mountains was not too much of a problem after all!! Becky returned early, wet and tired having seen nothing but cloud, fog and rain....not a mountain in sight!! ... read more

Day 33 was the one we had been looking forward to for a while...chocolate, cheese and wine tasting in the Hunter Valley!!! We joined the minibus at 7.45am and headed to our first stop....the Walkabout Wildlife Park! We had our first experiences of Australian wildlife and were walking around with kangaroos, stroking Koalas and holding yet more snakes which was very exciting!! Next stop was the chocolate factory where we sampled chilli chocolate (NOT nice) and then it was winery number 1! We were aiming for sophistication and succeeded until we decided to make our first purchase. Always looking for a bargain we didn't miss the clearance case of 12 bottles of wine for $45! Unfortunately however the wine did come at the expense of taste which was very definately not exquisite and so spritzers were ... read more

Having been in Sydney for a few days now, we had to start thinking about how are adventure was going to continue up the coast....campervan or bus!? Crossing the road to the campervan rental Camilla had her first arachnid induced mini heart attack as an enourmous spider crawled across the ROAD under a car! Panic over we explored the vans before heading to the greyhound office. A delightful few hours were then spent in the park assessing our dire financial situations which led to only one option...the bus! 13 hour overnight bus journeys were inevitable and so we returned to the hostel for the free BBQ which was amazing! Kangaroo steaks were very much enjoyed and whilst Camilla and Elin decided to stay in for an early night Becky joined our new found friends in Darling ... read more

The sun was shining so we decided to head out to Sydney's famous Bondi Beach. The views did not disappoint, both natural and human (surfers and the famous lifeguards!!) And 3 hours were spent admiring them before Becky and Elin decided to venture into the sea. Unfortunately the waves were a little too exciting for them (Elin was struggling to keep her bikini on) and they drifted across to the surfing section and were told over the tannoy to move! oozing sophistication they moved along and continued to be bashed by the waves! Having enjoyed a whole afternoon of actual sunshine on a a beach (we thought this would never happen!) we returned to King's Cross and to our new hostel Great Aussie Backpackers to prepare for our first night out in Sydney! Having packed only ... read more

We began the day by joining a (free) walking tour which took us all around the sights of Sydney in 3 hours! Highlights included circular quay and the botanical gardens which had a tree of hanging fruit bats (not nice!). We then walked round the harbour to get our postcard shots of the opera house before heading back for dinner and wine! ... read more

The overnight flight to Sydney was relatively painless, and after no sleep and a lot of film and TV watching we landed to yet MORE rain!! Passport control gave us our first taste of Australian men which didn't disapoint and after Camilla and Becky were stopped for carrying elephant diseases (their trainers had to be washed and scrubbed!) we made it through to the shuttle bus and arrived at our first hostel. Having decided that walking around Sydney in the rain having had no sleep was not appealing we had a nap and awoke to sunshine!! The rest of the day was largely spent finding our way around but we liked what we saw!! ... read more

Our last day in Phi Phi left us feeling a little fragile from the night before but we enjoyed the most sunshine we'd ever had on the island and met up with Alex from uni. Hoping to have a nice evening Camilla had a tiny crisis with 500 pounds having been donated to Ryan Air from her bank account! Upon this discovery and folloing several costly phone calls to the bank we withdrew our remaining funds and prayed that the 3 pounds we had left would last us until Australia!! The ferry from Phi Phi to Phuket was rocky to sya the least with Elin having to lie down on the deck and Camilla grabbing Becky's arm every time the boat was thrashed from side to side by the waves (appox. every 2 minutes!!!) Safely on ... read more

Amazingly the ferry to Phi Phi was running and feeling that we had already experienced the heaviest rain we had ever seen oh how we were to be proved wrong. Exiting the ferry in Phi Phi was the equivalent of jumping into the ocean, especially for Becky wo had since misplaced both her poncho and rucksack cover, and so binliners were adapted haphazardly to little effect!! The rain did stop and the sun immediately started shining, however the streets of Phi Phi were like mini rivers as we were lead to Bamboo Mountain View....after trundling through sewage, up steep slopes and through 'danger landslide signs' we arrived at the stunning hotel. We stayed at Bamboo Mountain for approx. 15 minutes before deciding that even this was almightily below our already low backpacking standards. The Bamboo hut ... read more
