After a night on the town in which we succumed to the charms of little flower boy Daniel, Becky had a delightful 7am start for a day trip to Chiang Rai. Unfortunately, Elin and Camilla were unable to join her having slightly missed judged timings for purchasing anti-malarials so sadly, Becky had to go it alone! The trip to Chiang Rai was eventful to say the least but throughout the 500km round bus tour Becky was lucklily kept entertained by two recently married spaniards, Pedro and Juanber! The first stop was at a hot spring followed much to Becky's dismay by a visit to yet another temple! After this we headed to the Golden Triangle that marks the point where the borders of the three countries Thailand, Burma and Laos meet. After a lovely boat ride ... read more

We awoke this morning to another American breakfast and prepared rather nervously for a descent down the mountain and out of the jungle! The path down was a little easier than we expected but some traditional warrior facepaint made from the bark of a tree may have slightly stained Camilla's face a beautiful reddish tinge - but it must've worked as there were no animal attacks big or of the 8-legged variety!! Another nice lunch and then an amazing elephant trek which involved Becky sitting on the elephant's neck whilst Camilla and Elin sat on a barred seat with the instructor on her head!! Despite the heavy load 45 year-old Tabi the elephant took us through the forest and we may have treated her to some bananas and sugar cane which were gratefully snatched by her ... read more

We had an exceptionally early start this morning as Camilla and Elin went in search of anti-malarials, but the language difficulties got the better of us and we returned empty handed with our Changovers to join the rest of our trekking group. The journey to the jungle was a tight squeeze with all ten of us in the back of a truck but we soon arrived after some winding roads and crazy driving to the river for bamboo rafting! Unfortunately Elin was still a little delicate and started to vomit uncontrollably, yet she ventured on and before we knew it we were floating down a river on a rather wobbly bamboo raft! The river was thankfully not too rapid-like but there were a branch collisions on the way down! Safely back on dry land (or so ... read more

We had an early start this morning and following an exceptionally hot yellow curry from the night before Camilla also joined Elin's toilet troubles and immodium was required for two during the 6 hour coach journey from Sukhothai to Chiang Mai. Having arrived in Chiang Mai a Deet search then began in preparation for our jungle trek the following day. Deet located and trek meeting over we ventured into Chiang Mai and went to a local bar and restuarant where we met some more travellers and had some really good cheap food...and possibly a little too many Changs!... read more

After an amazing breakfast of banana pancakes we headed to the ancient ruins of Sukhothai Historical Park. Our transport was a little slower than expected in an opened back bus/truck with the locals, but when we arrrived in the park we had the choice of many many bicycles and opted for the 'turbo' bikes with 'big girl' Becky instantly assigned a higher saddle! Elin's knees on the other hand were touching her chin!! And so map in hand we once again began our cycle and toured the beautiful ruins set in the scenic park. Well and truly templed and cycled out we headed back on the 'bus' at approx. 5 mph to the guesthouse to shower and wash our very sweaty clothes! For dinner we sampled the 'Dream Cafe' however the bike journey was not as ... read more

After a 6 and a quarter hour coach journey and 10 hours without food we arrived in Sukhothai and headed straight to the local 7-11 for supplies! The guesthouse is the best yet with our own bungalow and free bicycle. The toilet was broken however which wasn't great considering Elin's current condition so we decided to stay around the lobby and ate pad thai in the guesthouse restaurant. ... read more

At 7am we were greeted in the hotel lobby by Mr Sammy, our taxi driver, who drove us to Bangkok station and left us with our 3rd class standee tickets worth 20THB (just over 48p!!) After an hours wait in which we embarrassingly sat through the national anthem whilst the rest of the station stood and sang facing the king's portrait! we boarded the luxurious train and began a very hot and dusty journey to the ancient city of Ayutthaya. Arriving at the guest house in a slightly larger tuk-tuk this time, we were greeted with free water, a guide map and 3 bicycles.........which were super high tech........if you lived in 1900! With very little brakes and some interesting front wheel handling we edged onto the manic main road and tryed to avoid the traffic and ... read more

Our final day in Bangkok started with an attempted mission to the Grand Palace which resulted in yet another tuk-tuk ride to a 45ft high buddah and the lucky buddah, but there was a catch......in order to travel cheaply we had to visit the fashion factory and the jewellery factory so that our tuk-tuk driver could get a fuel coupon in exchange! so after returning to the fashion factory for the second time in 2 days and still leaving empty handed we arrrived at the Grand Palace very hot and inappropriately dressed! Becky had the required capped sleeves, but Camilla and Elin's scarves were not acceptable and so they had to walk through the splendour of the palace in some very attractive granny blouses! (even tying them in a knot didn't increase their glamour!!) Having toured ... read more

After a good night's sleep we were in search of breakfast and a new (cheaper!) home for the evening which we in found in the form of raisin bread and The Khaosan Palace Inn. After moving our rucksacks all of 200 yards up the road we then set out to explore Bangkok....we managed a further 500 yards trying to find the boat station but instead a helpful local put us on a tuk-tuk (price arranged!) to take us to see some of Bangkok's temples. Tuk-tuk driving is a little different to DVLA standards but we did survive the 60mph tin shack ride along some of Bangkok's busiest roads! After seeing several Buddahs we 'decided to visit the TAT (tourism office) as didn''t have any idea how we were going to navigate ourselves across the rest of ... read more

After a long and slightly more restful for some (Elin!) flight we arrived in a very hot and humid bangkok to some cheery passport control men and luckily three rucksacks! We managed to navigate our way not only to the bus stop but to the ticket booth and even the right bus! Arriving on Khaosan Road, we were a little disorientated and after finally managing to put our rucksacks on we (after a few wrong directions) found the Rikka Inn on the bustling backpackers Khaosan Road. Hotel was lovely and we were able to enjoy the air con before venturing out for our first taste of original Thai cuisine....which didn't disappoint! After all the excitement an early night was definiately required!... read more
