Goodbye NJ, Hello NY
Goodbye NJ, Hello NY
We were very excited to see the New Jersey New York state line.
June 18 We stayed the previous night at a church hostel in Vernon, NJ. We had all-you-can-eat pizza, bought some groceries, and watched the Celtics win the NBA championship. In the morning, we were able to quickly type a blog entry before we had to leave (the church was having a preschool graduation ceremony and didn't want any dirty hikers hanging around). A local trail angel showed up to take us back to the trail. We all loaded into his van, anxious to get back on the trail. Some of the others had to run errands, though, so we got a [View Full Entry]

Honeymoon climbing out of Leigh High Gap.
June 11 Ira Fine gave us a ride back to the trail. Aside from ourselves, there were three other hikers staying there: Willie Boy, Root, and Night Terror. We hiked with them for most of the day. The trail coming out of Lehigh Gap was the closest thing to mountain climbing we've had so far. It was actually a lot of fun, and quite challenging. The rest of that day was rocky hiking, and when we made it to the shelter, we decided to set up the tent to avoid the bugs. We met a ridgerunner that day, named Rue. He [View Full Entry]

Hello all, we're back again with another exciting installment of Appalachian Trail fun. June 2 We got a late start today because we had to wait for the Doyle to open so that we could update the blog for you all. This would not have been the case had we found out earlier that the place we were relying on for an internet connection (Extreme PC) was no longer in existence. However, the morning wasn't all bad. We had breakfast once again at Goodies and this morning we had their famous Texas Pancakes. To make Texas Pancakes you take a piece [View Full Entry]

EQUIPMENT LIST For those of you who might be interested, here is our detailed list of equipment that we compiled in the days before leaving Stillwater. We weighed each and every item down to the quarter-ounce and thoroughly considered whether each gear item was worth its weight. We have since decided to send home several items, including: our rain gear (which we replaced with lightweight, cheap, plastic ponchos), the smaller cook pot, the sunscreen, the compass (we had a smaller version), the Swiss army knife (we have a better knife), the removable legs of one pair of pants each (it's to [View Full Entry]

After 20 days and more than 230 miles, certain things can start to wear on a person. So, in the interest of your entertainment and our therapeutic benefit, we'd like to present Honeymoon's and Short Stick's list of the top ten things we hate right now. And, just like the amps of the legendary band Spinal Tap, this top ten list goes to eleven. 11. POISON IVY Not such a big problem until we reached Duncannon, poison ivy has choked certain parts of the trail ever since. We have avoided any major outbreaks, though we both have a few spots that [View Full Entry]

May 24 Rested and refreshed, the hikers continue their journey in the late morning. We planned on doing an easy, 5 mile day to Devil's Racecourse Shelter. The trail wound through several grassy meadows and this (combined with the rocks from the day before) gave us an idea of what Pennsylvania would be like. After a short, steep climb, we found the trail to Devil's Racecourse Shelter, which was downhill a third of a mile of sharp rocks. When we got there, we found two hikers and a 4-ft. black snake coiling its way up the shelter wall. After one of [View Full Entry]

So, here goes, the first entry. Seems strange that the trip is only three days old, because it could be weeks as far as we're concerned. We began in Harpers Ferry, WV, on the morning of the 21st at the Appalachian Trail Conservancy. The people there were all very helpful; we weighed our packs and headed off. Brian's parents walked with us down the first mile or so of trail, past Jefferson Rock and into historic Harpers Ferry. There were bands of screaming children running all over the place, which was a bit disconcerting on what was supposed to be a [View Full Entry]

Hello all! This is the beginning page for our great Appalachian Trail hike we are planning to take in late May. We decided to hike on the Ouachita Trail because the trail is close and provides more elevation than we could ever find in Stillwater Oklahoma. This hike is to test our gear and bodies for the grueling but exciting trip ahead of us. Here is how it went.... We arrived in Poteau Oklahoma and enjoyed on last sleep on a bed. When we woke the next morning, ready to get moving, the car wouldn't start. It was Sunday, so prospects [View Full Entry]
