EQUIPMENT LIST

For those of you who might be interested, here is our detailed list of equipment that we compiled in the days before leaving Stillwater. We weighed each and every item down to the quarter-ounce and thoroughly considered whether each gear item was worth its weight. We have since decided to send home several items, including: our rain gear (which we replaced with lightweight, cheap, plastic ponchos), the smaller cook pot, the sunscreen, the compass (we had a smaller version), the Swiss army knife (we have a better knife), the removable legs of one pair of pants each (it's too hot), our stove's windscreen, and Jessica's arch supports. We also were carrying way too much food at the outset, and we have cut down on our food supplies as well (there are more resupply opportunities than we had originally thought).

Obviously, the weight of our packs fluctuates with how much food we've eaten, how full our gas bottle is, and how full our hydration bladders are at the moment. Since Jessica carries the food bag, her pack decreases in weight as the days go by (at which time she graciously offers to take a few items off Brian's back--since her pack gets so light). The estimate we gave earlier is still fairly accurate, or at least so we think (20-26 lbs. for J, 30-36 lbs. for B). However, since we've dropped several items and added only the Crocs, some medical tape, and a pair of leggings for J, our minimum weight might actually be lower than that.

For those of you who aren't backpackers, this should give you an idea of how serious an issue weight is. When an A.T. hiker asks another hiker "What's your weight?" they're not talking about body weight. We're pretty happy with where we are right now, but the equipment list is always an evolving thing, so all of this is subject to change.

So, if you're interested, here it is.

(P.S. I originally had this in a spreadsheet as a table, so everything was more clearly organized. The blog won't let me keep that format, so this may be a little difficult to read with the numbers all squished together. I placed semicolons in between the pounds and ounces to try to clarify. With most of the items, there's no semicolon, which means the item's weight is less than a pound and the number represents only ounces. Hope you can make sense of it--I'm tired of messing with it. --Honeymoon)
