Dipping in the Danube
Dipping in the Danube
Near Estergon it was so hot we swam in the (not so) Blue Danube.
Day 37, 7th July. Komárom - Estergom - Szentendre - Budapest (Budaors) Early, at 6am, Scott and I walked around to the thermal-baths next to the site while the others were sleeping. The hot mineral waters were so refreshing to tired legs. For breakfast we ate bread and cheese rolls as the others were waking up. We did manage to be on the road for 10 am for our trip along the Danube to Budapest which turned out further than expected! The wind was in our faces before we turned the bend. Estergom was beautiful with its impressive basilica. Further on [View Full Entry]

Day 34, 4th July. Zidlochovice - Brečlav - Rheintal (AUSTRIA) - Hohenau We all lived through the night and were fit to ride another day. Today we headed south towards Austria passing through Lednice, where I’d been before, along the route. In Breclav it was time to use up the last Czech money and to have a meal before we headed for the miserably staffed border station at Rheintal on the Czech / Austrian border. There was no evidence of the former Iron Curtain or where it had been at all. So we carried on south parallel to the Morava river [View Full Entry]

Day 36, 6th July. Bratislava - Dunajská Streda - Komárom (HUNGARY) We were all hungover badly, with little cash. Spent a lot of time hanging around the café drinking strong coffee and feeling very sorry for ourselves. Toby decided he wanted to go into the city to use the internet, the other two wanted to rest. So I decided to walk around to the naturist area on the other side of the lake and to sunburn my buns a little. We all set out after lunch and traveled along busy and confusing roads to try and find the little roads out [View Full Entry]

Two Brothers - Prague
Rory meets his brother Rowan on our arrival in Prague.
Day 26, 26th June. Prague. The day was spent buzzing around town looking for stuff again. We met up with Toby and had some drinks, quite a lot actually - so the day passed into oblivion. We went back to the campground before, I wasn’t going to risk having anything else nicked overnight like my sandals last night. Rory went off to stay at his brother’s and I stayed at the campsite with Scott, Toby went off back to his hostel and we arranged to meet up in the morning to go up to the Russian Embassy with Rowan and Klara [View Full Entry]

Our first stop was in Sulzbach for bread and cakes. The town was preparing for a carnival, it would have been nice to stay but we had targets to meet. We stopped near [View Full Entry]

Rory and Scott drinking copius amounts of beer near Nürnberg, and....
Day 23, 23rd June. Röshof - Großhubersdorf - Nürnberg - Pommelsbruhn We were on the road early again, a lovely day again. We stopped off at a village to finish off last nights pasta on a brötchen. It was a short ride into Nürnberg, a confusing city and very busy until we entered the Altstadt - it was amazingly beautiful. We bought our pepper-sprays here and tried to find bike bits but with no luck. Scot and Rory went to McDonald’s against my advice, paid €5 each (twice the price of last night’s meal I cooked for all of us) and [View Full Entry]

At the end of a 100 mile day we reached Heidelberg just as the sun was setting on the castle.
Day 22, 22nd June. Jagsthausen - Schrozberg - Rothenburg - Röshof We arose early, packed, and left without paying the €2.50 requested on the sign - there was no-one there to take it to anyway. It was 7 when we carried on along the Jagstal cycle path. We stopped for breakfast at a Backerei and watered up before the climb at the end of the valley which was pretty hard. Scott’s legs were paining him again so we slowed down. The thing with following the rivers is that we do only about half the distance as the crow flies - Scott [View Full Entry]

Day 20, 20th June. St Goar - Bingen - Mainz - Lörsch - Heidelberg Woke early feeling much better with appetite back. We were all on the road at eight. Toby was dazed and confused as usual, he keeps losing things; camera, sunglasses, mug… We had breakfast in a bakery and carried on down the Rhein. The mists lifted to reveal a blue sky, it was to be a hot day. Once at Bingen the scenery flattened out and we followed a rather confusing path along the river to Mainz for lunch. At Oppenhein we went on the roads through villages [View Full Entry]

Day 18, 18th June. Wesserling - Bonn - Remagen A bit Queezy!!! I was up all night with the worse sickness and diarrhea I’ve ever had. I didn’t realize my body could contain so much puke, yuch! Rory helped me out and stood in some of my vomit in the process. It must have been some sort of food poisoning. At 10.30 we set off, I felt weak, but we found the Rhein and continued to Bonn where the guys got their bikes fixed and other bits added too… Toby became one of the ‘Brookes squad’ and then his front pannier [View Full Entry]

Day 16, 16th June. Around Düsseldorf The guys, and Leslie, have all emulated their ‘Great Leader’ and bought Brookes saddles*. Today was spent lurking around town. At Kaufhaus we managed to use the internet and I read the many letters from Kathryn, including naughty ones! Later on we went to Mark and Urs’s place to pick up our bikes we left last night then went back to the tents. I cooked dinner and Mark arrived later with Rita, his new girlfriend! Later on I called Kathryn collect, and spoke to her an hour about life and love, many times before have [View Full Entry]
