On the night train from Budapest to Buhcharest I met one of the most amazing people not just on this trip but possibly in my entire life. Andras, our transylvanian sweetheart! We weren't on the train long before he had pounded upon us with many many questions! We were sharing the sleeper carriage with him and this other hungarian lady who made and sold perfume for a living. He told us of his country's history and everything about his own life until now. He spent a long time telling us of how he was a hungarian at heart living in Romanian territory...His way of describing it to us was..."we are like you irish, and these romanians are like those English" ha ha,..an interesting comparison i must say but i didn't dare argue him on the subject! ... read more

"I wanna know..Have you Ever seen the rain.." As our train pulled away from Bratislava we made our way to Budapest, It was the words of Rod Stewert's song that echoed through my head....and I truely began to wonder of that very same question looking out across the beautiful landscape, Have you ever seen the rain?....At that moment it all seemed so perfect..The sun beamed in through the window and I began to look forward to another Glorious city... Budapest, It surprised me to be honest but i don't really know how to explain that..I guess it was nothing like what i expected..Nothing like the rest of the cities we visited really. I don't know if it was mostly because of the great weather we were blessed with or what...but it semmed more of a holiday ... read more

We arrived in Bratislava late enough from Vienna. The train station was a lot smaller then the others we had been to. The only perceptions I had of the place, were the ever so dark and gloomy ones, I got from watching the film "Hostel"! In the film the director Tarrentino perceives the place to be a dangerous city in which the locals kill off any tourists one by one. Within a few hours though of being here we realised the city was far from anything like this. We stayed in the "Patio Hostel", fairly central and even though it was quite possibly the slowest check in I've ever bee through, I had no major complaints. OH WAIT except for being awoken on the last day by about twenty builders outside our window. They were hammering ... read more

"The streets of Vienna are paved with culture" We've watched the games the past few weeks and cheered on the Country in which we were of course..but to finally be here in Vienna where it's all being hosted was mental...Unfortunately i think it has taken a lot of this culture that Karl Kraus speaks of, away from the streets of this city......It has so much to offer but it's all hidden beneath so much building structures and advertisings just put up for the matches... We stayed in a pretty amazing hostel out in Westbahnhof..The wombats hostel-The base, but never got to appreciate it's greatness as we were only there for the night....It had amazing facillities such as the pub and what not...The first thing i noticed when we got here was the fact there were ... read more

We arrived in the train station in Krakow to get the over night train to Prague looking forward to a peacful nights sleep and train journey! We thought of the money we were saving on a night in a hostel also and so all was well..Who KNEW that the next ten hours on this train would be the best ten hours of our entire trip to date.... We found our sleeper carriage(which was EVEN smaller then the one from Berlin, if that's even possilble to imagine) and introduced ourselves to the other two already there..as soon as we got a hello from them, we knew that they were Irish...and on both sides there were smiles in abundance...The couple were from Belfast and were delighted to finally meet some other irish, as were we...From down the corrider ... read more

Well a lovely peaceful train ride from warsaw and we finally made it to Krakow...It was a short enough journey during which we were given free tea/coffee and even some chocolate...How pleasent yes???well i was quite simply delighted with it all and was already feeling to warmth of krakow which had been absent the past few days... We Managed to find the Hostel easily enough! But even though already we noticed a SLIGHT change in the atmosphere it didn't take from the manic driving that is obviously present THROUGH OUT Poland...We weren't moments off the tram in Krakow when right in front of us we saw a car flying at an UNREASONABLE speed through a cross roads and a red light, i was shocked enough by this little event and THEN i see the car go straight ... read more

Well finally we made it to Warsaw...immediately I didn't feel al that welcomed...This was a feeling that stayed with me through out our stay here...Everywhere we went, I almost felt GUILTY about being there...At any of the Museums or Churches people would shout at us for the most random things and we were clueless as to what was going on hald the time...EXAMPLE----We got to the Royal Castle thingy and the sign on the door(which was all in English only) said that there would be tours between ten and one or something like that..When we got to eh 'Kasa' boot to buy the ticket this woman SHOUTED at us for asking could we buy two tickets for the tour..'NO TOUR' she replied..and that as that..no explanation, nothing to be honest...Fair enough I'd say something if it ... read more

June 7th, 21:45 on Platform 15 at Lichtenburg Station in Berlin my Whole world came crashing down around me...A moment i'm not soon to forget all to easily! However, as the tears streamed down my face as i poured my heart out over a txt message to my best friend back home, I couldn't help but smile at her reply.."Well Brigid, at least it's one to tell the Grandkids" and for the first time i think she may be right...Before i get to telling Grandkids though, how about i simply begin by telling you... It was Friday and as i already mentioned we were having to chance waiting to see if we could get a place on the overnight train to Warsaw, as the ticket man said he couldn't sell us one less then a day before ... read more

I would never of thought I'd end up liking this place so much: everthing basically went smoothly on ou rfirst two days here. Our train came in on time, we found our hostel easily enough with no major complications! We're staying on the east side of Berlin. In a young and trendy part of town called "Prenzlauerberg". The hostel Lettem sleep i scheap enough and perfectly located. the food nearby is very cheap and fairly central with just the underground to Alexanderplatz to get. the city is young and alive and it most certainly shows. We happened upon the T.V tower and reached the top at 368 meters, at which we were blown away by the mesmerising views we were presented with!! From above is the best way to see Berlin, in the same way as ... read more

From Ghent we had to get a train to Antwerp and then Change trains here to head onto Amsterdam..My god the station in Antwerp BLEW us away...It had at least 24 platforms all as new and modern as the next!!!! We noticed the difference from the train window as soon as we arrived in Holland.Ya know that stereotypical image we have of Holland with all the flowers and the windmills, the sort ya think you'd only find on a postcard???well yes that really is exactly how we saw it from the train!!! The walk from the station to the hostel was the most painful and yet at the same time the most glorious walk ever... As we searched for the Hostel (which seriously seemed so easy to find in our head), my back and shoulders began ... read more
