Day 4, Saturday Verona to Padova We had a great night's sleep...it rained all night, but now the sun is out and we have had a great walk around Verona...had coffee and brioche at an outdoor cafe (three tables on a narrow street) next to the Dior shop.....bought cheese, roasted chestnuts, and a bottle of wine at the open air market....We are at the only internet cafe in town...no wifi here... The town was quiet when we headed out this morning around 9:30, but is jammed full of tourists now at mid day. We have seen very elegant locals...one woman in a white designer coat and black highheeled boots rode by us on her bike....In general the women are very stylish and thin... We will walk around the Roman Arena, eat, get our bags, and take ... read more

Day Two Milano to Bergamo (Forgot to say in last blog that we saw much marble being cut in the mountains coming in from Switzerland.) This morning, we walked in the light rain to the Duomo. On the way we stopped coffee and a chocolate brioche in very modern café where I got locked in the bathroom! We arrived at the Duomo, where we paid to climb the 250 steps to the wet marble roof, where one can walk around and view the stonework up close and look over the city of Milan. We took a quick look inside the cathedral and visited one the oldest shopping arcades in the world, before taking the subway back to our hotel. Before picking up our bags we ate at a small restaurant with a set menu of 7euros ... read more

Day One Geneva to Milan But now we're in Italy....and I can't yet speak Italian...frustration again! We started this trip with a late taxi, but that has been the only problem...and we still got to the airport in plenty of time...Everyone we dealt with has been extra nice from the United ticket agent to the train conductors. We've had no one bother us or ask us for anything! Not even one taxi driver has approached us! We were able to travel in business class from DC to Geneva, so that was quite wonderful...the seats moved to a completely flat position for sleeping, so we got some rest last night. We arrived in Geneva around 8:00 am, and bought train tickets for Milan right in the airport. We had to change trains in the city center. In ... read more

Hello Everyone, We are off to Italy in a week...it will be a real change for us and a return to the travels of our youth. After having spent all of our travel time recently (except for the trip to Canada) in Hispanic (or in Lynn's case, Kenyan) cultures, this will be a different sort of trip. Of course, with the heavy Italian influence in Argentina, we have built in a bit of a segue.... Please unsubscribe if you are not interested! Here are few recent photos...... read more

North America » Canada » Alberta » Banff April 23rd 2009

We had a beautiful drive to Banff on Monday...weather was good and the roads clear and almost traffic free! The Rockies are higher and more jagged than the Cascades... The drive was beautiful...we saw a coyote, an elk, big-horned sheep, many deer...many parts of the road are fenced to prevent road kill, but you still have to be alert. We didn't see any bears...although we were in grizzly territory! We arrived in Banff in the late afternoon, and checked into our hotel, located across from the Bow River on a quiet street. (Quiet was important, since we had been woken by the drunks at closing time in Nelson for the past two nights...a big drinking town, it seems....) We explored the town (not as charming as Nelson, and big on shopping and with more tourists than ... read more

North America » Canada » British Columbia » Nelson April 20th 2009

We decided to take a short road trip to British Columbia, a western province of Canada. Upon a friend's recommendation, we headed to the turn of the century town of Nelson. We drove from LaConner across Steven's Pass (the North Cascades Highway is still closed due to snow), and then north through Coulee City and Grand Coulee. The basalt cliffs along Banks Lake were spectacular! We then cut across the Colville Indian Reservation (on a mountain road that the GPS pretended not to recognize for several miles) and then north, this time to the Canadian border, crossing at Danville, a very small town. The US and Canadian houses were only several yards apart, but one cannot walk across the invisible border without being arrested! This was a very unpleasant start to the Canadian part of the ... read more

We had a lucky trip back....we were flying on passes and so had no reserved seats, but on the website the flight looked wide open with plenty of seats....when we got to the airport, we found out that the plane was being loaded with lots of cargo, leaving perhaps no room for non-paying passengers. We waited with several other people for an hour, just about giving up hope and starting to plan for a night in an expensive airport hotel room...and then our names were called! We were off to DC. We also got on the connecting flight to Seattle without a hitch (thanks again, Karl!). Since we left late at night, slept on most of both flights, and got to Seattle before noon, it really felt like we just had gone sleep and woken up ... read more

Our last day here...and it has rained and poured all day....but it´s warm...and LaConner won´t be... We packed up, and left our luggage in the hotel office..and set off for the first of three museums we wanted to visit today. 1. Architecture Museum Close by, but closed with no explaination 2. Malba (Museum of Latin American Art) Open, half price today. Excellent museum full of Americans and Euros. 3. Museum of Popular Arts Found this on our walk to the next museum. Cost .25 each...and there wasn´t much to see...some cool horse ornaments and mate cups in silver. 4. Museum of Xul Solar, a famous painter who invented his own world. Walked there in a downpour. Closed still for summer vacation. At least there was a note... 5. Museum of Foreign Debt Housed in the U ... read more

We never made it to Uruguay today...we got up at 7 am to get to the boat by 830, since we had not been able to buy tickets online....we ended up at the place where the boat used to be a few months ago...took a taxi to the ticket office which was closed. Tried to find the boat...but no luck (It was a few miles away from where we had ended up)....ran into the filming of an American Airlines commercial...and watched that.... We then decided to take a train to San Isidro, a suburb up the Rio Plata from BA. We spent most of the day walking around. looking at beautiful homes, eating a great lunch, and sneaking on a train for one stop... We will go to Uruguay on the next trip here and spend ... read more

We are nearing the end of this trip....and doing some of the things we missed at the beginning of the trip here... Yesterday, we walked arcross the city from our hotel through St. Telmo (where BA originated) to La Boca (where immigrants arrived, and tango grew famous, along with soccer) for about 7 hours, stopping for meals and sights. We strolled through antique markets, got caught in a thunderstorm, walked into La Boca (where looking at poverty painted bright colors is a tourist attraction), walked with the crowds waiting to to get into the Boca Juniors game (where Maradona played...) and decided not to join them (a good idea it turned since the thunderstorms increased as the gane time neared), and watched tango finally.... The day before, we spent time with Silvina and Enders, the couple ... read more
