Here's a parade going by our old house.

Yikes, people. Last night, I was at first brilliant, figuring out that I could get the very sticky jack fruit residue off of our knife by running the blade through the flame of the stove (the gunk has been on said knife since my parents were in Mbale - 2-3 weeks!)! You know where this is going... Yay, I'm so smart! Okay, 10 seconds later, I become the stupidest person in all of Uganda, when I proceed to my next task - chopping garlic - by squashing a garlic clove with my hand.... on the VERY HOT KNIFE. Isn't that brilliant? [View Full Entry]

We left my parents in Entebbe to fly out the next day (which they did, and, after several days of sleeping, are now fully recovered!), and flew via Nairobi to Dar es Salaam, then on to Zanzibar town. The most exciting part of the journey was when we went to the Java House in Nairobi airport and got delicious iced lattes! You see, there aren't Starbucks on every corner here, so we have been espresso-deprived. Of course, Andy remedied this by bringing a stove-top espresso maker for us, which Suzy's friend Jess bought for us! (THANK YOU! Since our return, we [View Full Entry]

New house!

 Africa » Uganda
We moved! We've already been at the new house for three week, but it's been so busy with visitors and work, that I haven't been able to write much. The new house is much better than the old house - in that it doesn't cost an arm and a leg! Yay. Unfortunately, it doesn't have a generator, but that is basically the only complaint. The good news is, we have hired a guard who takes good care of us and watches out at night. We are now living with Catherine, our friend from Canada. She is trying to figure out her [View Full Entry]

Just the 3 of us

March has been a busy month. The team has already been to 9 food distributions, with 2 more to go this week. We have a team of dedicated volunteers who are administering a questionnaire to a random sample of clients at 3 to 4 food distribution sites at each of 3 centers (Tororo, Soroti, and Mbale). Food support is continuing in Soroti, but is just ending in the other two areas as of March 31, 2008. We are trying to see the effect of the food support program on clients, as well as the impact of the program ending. Here are [View Full Entry]

Adventure sports!

Africa » Uganda » Eastern Region » Jinja
First of all, while my parents were here, Andy also arrived! We all had a few days in Mbale, showing them TASO, our work, and the cool waterfalls nearby. On the way back to Kampala to drop my parents off and head to another adventure, we did all sorts of adventure sports and had exciting times! We stopped in Jinja, which is a lovely town with many "mzungus" due to it being The Source of the Nile and host to many NGOs. First stop, Adrift, where Suzy and Andy went bungee jumping! It was amazing. I tried to jump, but I [View Full Entry]

We all went to Kampala last weekend and picked up my parents! They were tired, but excited - it is my dad's 32nd visit to Africa! We went on a safari for a few days - here are some photos. Uganda is really beautiful! We saw many tea and sugar cane plantations, rolling hills, high mountains, grasslands, and the Rift Valley. Nice time! [View Full Entry]

Here is the new "chicken" at TASO (somehow the word "kitchen" gives people trouble) ... where the wonderful client ladies will make our tea and lunches of posho, rice, beans, what what... The building has been put up over the last week or so. Check out the awesome roof supports and walls, made from untreated, un-cut wood. The tools used include: hoes, to dig the earth and put in the foundations, pick axe, to dig the channel for the water pipes, hammer and saw. No power tools, no heavy machinery. Quite impressive! Since the arrival of Suzy, the amazing Peace Corps- taught cooking expert, we have acquired a sufuria stove-top oven, which works like a charm! We made chocolate cake (with frosting!), banana bread, and more recently, cinammon bread! Here are some photos (I hope)... [View Full Entry]
