Asia » Burma » Yangon Region » Yangon April 15th 2010

We arrived in Yangon train station with little indication that bombs had gone off. We found another westerner who was going the same place as us and looked for a cab. The ones at the station were charging 5 times more than it should be and so we wandered further afield. The Swiss guy was insistant that we could get one for $1.50 but it soon became obvious this wouldn't happen. We took one for $3 and were glad that we had booked ahead from Inle as we had the last free room. We sent a quick email home in case they were worried and got some much needed rest. ahaha they were not worried at all as it had not made it to the news. I was gutted at the lack or parental panic over ... read more

Asia » Burma » Mandalay Region » Inle Lake April 11th 2010

So after an eventful bus ride we were dropped off at the cross roads outside town where we waited for a pickup knowing the price should be $1. After saying no to offers of 5 and 6 we eventually went with a guy who was just going back home and would take us begrudgingly for the same price as the pickup. His car was falling to bits but was also pretty retro. We were finally in inle and already planning on getting out. This was purely because we knew we had to get back to Yangon aka Rangoon for the water festival which everyone recommended to us at the former capital. By the time we had checked in it was too late to go round travel agents and touts so we went instead for a curry. ... read more

Asia » Burma » Mandalay Region » Bagan April 9th 2010

So arriving at 1am in bagan was definately an experience and one we even enjoyed. The whole reason we had included Burma in our trip was for this place. Emma had googled it to death and regailed me (and anyone else who would stand still for 2 mins) with facts about how it had the most temples per square whatever anywhere. I of course had forgotten all of this until the bus ride there and despite our strong views that we had seen enough temples to last a lifetime we were both giddy and excited when in the distance we saw golden glows outline in a myriad of coloured lights. It was like an horizion dotted in golden Christmas trees. As we drove ever closer they passed and we got to the center of town and ... read more

Asia » Burma » Mandalay Region » Mandalay April 4th 2010

So we finally pulled up to a heaving bus terminal still 20 minutes from our well deserved rest. We grabbed a bloke who had a bit of cardboard with a guesthouse name we recognised and he plonked us in a truck with some locals and we were off to Mandalay. The guesthouse was odd. It all looked normal but the room was a basement that had been put together from leftovers from other hotels. We didn't care. Our Frankenstein room had 4 beds - a bunk and a double and was a bargain. It was not however ready yet and so we nipped round the corner for a noodle soup before finally crashing. At some point the electricity must have come back on as we awoke to all the lights, fans and even the air con ... read more

Asia » Burma » Yangon Region » Yangon April 1st 2010

So we flew back through half an hour on the international timezones (yup Burma is one of those country's - enough umph to demand their own timezone but they only get half an hours worth) and landed after what my watch now showed as a 15 minute flight.......confused yet? Yangon airport was nice enough and what was even nicer was the line of hotel staff from various ones waiting to take those with and without bookings to a bed and shower. We were in the former category and I got to the live the dream and see my name being held up on a board at the arrivals We opted for one called Ocean Inn as it wasn't quite as far out of town as the guidebooks pick. We jumped in a minibus with a few ... read more

Asia » Laos » West » Vientiane March 27th 2010

So we finally left Luang Prabang on a bus headed for Vang Vien and then Vientiane. Vang Vien is one of Emmas old haunts from her previous travels. From her description and the people we had met who had been there since we had decided to give this place a miss despite it being such a popular travelers stop. When Emma went it was a one road town with few hostels and some pubs. The main road had plenty of open plan bars (read this as a wooden floor with some cushions and no particular structure) that showed endless reruns of Friends accompanied by every Western dish you can imagine with the added “Happy” ingredient. This would be marijuana or magic mushrooms added in unknown amounts. Accompanied by cheap beer and prices so low that it ... read more

Asia » Laos » West » Luang Prabang March 16th 2010

So we trawled into Luang Prabang in the afternoon and after finding that all the guesthouses charged the same amount (so much more than our cheap place in Muang Khua) we settled for one on the Mekong and after emptying our bags and a quick shower we headed out into the night. No sooner had we stepped outside and we bumped into one of the people who had left us behind on the boat 2 days before. He quickly avoided any conversation on how we had got here and what had happened to us and started chatting about what he had been up to. Me and Emma tried to glower at him but in all honesty he was nice enough and we were pleasant then headed off to get something to eat. Luang Prabang seemed to ... read more

Asia » Vietnam » Northwest » Dien Bien » Dien Bien Phu March 11th 2010

So the journey to Laos began with getting to the Hanoi bus station which was 20 minutes outside the city centre. We got there around 11 after our hotel advised that buses left throughout the day until 6pm. Of course this was wrong and we found out instead that the next bus didn't leave until 4:30, so we looked around for some way of spending our time but not money and also changing some dong to dollars in preparation for Laos. The local western union was closed and the only other two buildings in the area were a toyota dealership and a German style restaurant/brewery. So our logic was flawless - german beer comes in steins, which are big and so can be made to last some time. We got a drink each and settled in ... read more

Asia » Vietnam » Red River Delta » Hanoi March 4th 2010

One of us did manage some sleep on the bus but unfortunately Emma once again did not. This meant that when you arrived in a smoggy city at 5am there was one priority - a bed, at any cost. Whilst rushing around getting our bags and fighting off touts trying to take us to their hotel I managed to step into a drain full to the brim with last nights stagnant rain water. This left one of us tired and grumpy and the other smelly and grumpy - not the ideal way to go looking for a hotel. We checked a few out and eventually decided that our usual $15 maximum would have to be pushed for now to stop a small explosion of two English people wiping out the center of Hanoi. We found a ... read more

Asia » Vietnam » Central Highlands » Lam Dong » Da Lat February 28th 2010

Nha Trang, Hoi An & Hue We got onto another early bus headed for our next stop Nha Trang and almost immediately fell asleep. The journey took around 8 hours and was broken up with a quick stop off at food stall next to a temple on a hill. As we weren't stopped here for long we decided to forgo the temple and grab some food instead. We did get a photo from a distance however. Nha Trang is a seaside resort and so we approached it along a coast lined with palm trees. We saw the worlds largest over water cable car stretching across to an island sporting a Hollywood style saying VINPEARL, the name of the amusement park on the island. We had heard lots of mixed reviews about the city with lots of ... read more
