Wow! The border was CLOSE! I don't know if you were actually most further out at the jetty, but when looking and measuring att Google Earth, one might actually be right at the border to Finland when walking to the end of the jetty. It is not more than 154 meters across, and the jetty seems to end at 77 meters...
Did I enter Finland? What if the end if the jetty was 1 meter across the border? Does that mean that I actually entered Finland? Would that count as being abroad? If so, then it would be the first time I am since March 2020. /Ake
Hidden Gems along the Way Did you walk across the bridge or stop? Peace is a rare commodity. I would like to spend a night in Kalix. With all the things you keep mentioning we may need to spend a few weeks in Sweden.
On stopping and walking on Höga Kusten Bridge When going by car stopping on Höga Kusten Bridge is a bad idea. I actually don't know if you can walk across. It didn't cross my mind to try it. Btw, a piece of advice on going to Sweden - plan ahead. Distances are great and it quickly becomes time consuming if you wish to see things that are far away from each other. But I'd happily provide some advice if/when you actually decide to go. /Ake
I see the bell tower is separate, likely because it was too heavy for the roof of the church? We have some of those here too, esp when churches were built by the settlers.
No darkness in summer though We travelled for two and a half weeks and it never got dark. In northern Sweden in summer, much of June and at least first half of July, dusk is immediately followed by dawn without any night in between. /Ake
We have many Medieval churches in southern and western Sweden When I am from in southern Sweden there are lots of Medieval churches. It has crossed my mind that I could visit 20 or so of them and make a special blog entry about them. Probably won't happen though. But one place that has even more Medieval churches is Gotland island. We have plans on going there next year. When we write about that we sure will include several churches. /Ake
I guess so Long suspension bridges and tall buildings need to be slightly flexible and sway a little in strong winds. Otherwise they would break in a storm. So it makes sense that this bridge can sway a little. If you are able to feel it is another story. I have no idea if that is possible. /Ake
We are Emma Holmbro and Ake Dahllof. We live in Stockholm, Sweden.
We have travelled more or less regularly since the mid 1990-ies and it seems like the more we travel the more difficult it is to decide where to go next. Not because we are running out of places to visit but because we find more places we want to go to faster than we manage to travel to them.
Some of the things from our travel bucket list we have ticked off since we started this blog in 2006 are
