North Sweden Wow, the far north of Sweden - this is definitely somewhere I'd be interested in visiting, it looks amazing. I love the reindeer tunnel on the draisine ride, and your plan to go draisine riding every year! The meal on the river looks amazing too! Good old John Cleese - I agree, I think we also need to laugh more in life than we do. "Emma wasn't interested, and Ake can't see why" - lol, very funny! I would have firmly been in the Ake-camp here! ☺
Thank's for adding the photo Thank you for adding the photo to the sign-forum. When I have time I might go though some of our latest blog entries and add more photos. /Ake
We'll repeat that story one day We have plans on making a blog entry from Gothenburg where Ramberget, the other possible origin of the Rambo name, is located. We will then most likely repeat/reuse this story. It's a bit embarrasing to admit that we have such little to say that is interesting that we have to repeat ourselves. /Ake
Family names in Scandinavia... In doing my ancestry research I found that Scandinavian (and Dutch) last names were the father's first name with son or dotter attached followed by the name of the village from which they came.
I've seen that I know that tradition existed long time aqo but I know pretty much nothing about it. I can't say when that was in practice, how common it was or if it was only in certain regions it was in practice. /Ake
The more we look the more we find We are amazed of how many interesting places we find in Sweden. Before we started planning the trips we've made the last two summers most of them were unknown even to us. And we've lived in Sweden for almost all of our lives. So indeed there are many hidden gems in Sweden. /Ake
Cheese slicers and more I love seeing quirky things like the largest cheese slicer. The rapids are beautiful and we enjoyed hearing about the ghost town. What a lovely trip. Thanks for sharing.
Rambo... My 10th great grandfather, Gunnar Matsson Rambo, was born in Rambo, Vasterbotten, Sweden on 16 Jan 1579. His father's name was Matt Ramberget. In 1640 Gunnar immigrated with wife, Anne Paulsdotter, and son Sven, to the New Sweden colony at the mouth of the Delaware River 1640. His son, Sven Svensson Gunnarsson, sold William Penn the land which is now Philadelphia. Gunnar died on 11 Jun 1668 in what was still called New Sweden. I hope this confirms some of what you have written about the Rambo name! Quite a coincidence!
Very interesting How cool that we actually went to the village that one of your ancestors came from. Since he was actually born in Rambo and was named Rambo it seems like the theory that the village Rambo gave name to the Rambo family isn't totally dead after all. Thank you so much for telling me about that. By the way, it is a very small place. Possibly fewer than 20 people live there today. /Ake
On ghost towns We also like ghost towns. We have visited several interesting ones over the years. Pripyat in Ukraine (Chernobyl) we visited in 2009. In North Cyprus (2006) I saw Varosha. Even though I could not enter, it was still spectacular. /Ake
Northern Sweden Glad to read you were able to explore more of your beautiful country again last summer. I imagine there are many wonderful places to see in the north. Reading about the church towns really intrigued me, I like the idea of staying overnight whilst going to church. It sounds almost like a mini retreat or pilgrimage every weekend. The igloo hotel looks like an amazing experience too ?
Mini retreat When you describe it as a mini retreat it does sound quite nice, doesn't it? Add to it that it probably was the only time in the week that you could socially interact with people that weren't in your own family. /Ake
They only have it for about two weeks They only have that for about two weeks every summer and only one seating per day. We were lucky to be among the maybe 30 people who got to eat the dinner on the river last year. /Ake
It's a pity It's a pity they did that. Also, there were more of those humerous crosswalk signs. The others we didn't see. It would have been fun to walk oround in Haparanda and find them one by one. It would have been a great way to explore the town. /Ake
We are Emma Holmbro and Ake Dahllof. We live in Stockholm, Sweden.
We have travelled more or less regularly since the mid 1990-ies and it seems like the more we travel the more difficult it is to decide where to go next. Not because we are running out of places to visit but because we find more places we want to go to faster than we manage to travel to them.
Some of the things from our travel bucket list we have ticked off since we started this blog in 2006 are
