I woke up to the sounds of Delhi at about 5:30am, I turned to see Candace staring back at me her nose stuffed up making it hard to sleep. I told her to check out Jenn's bathroom (I was sure she would have some kind of medication) she popped a couple cold pills and then quickly drifted back to sleep. We woke up for real about an hour later, to get ready for the drive to Agra. I was greeted by Jennifer in the kitchen and offered a breakfast of yogurt and bananas. I was informed that there had been a rain storm the night before the first time in about 4 months (out like a light and missed all the fun), Jenn was excited because she thought the skies would be clear of pollution and ... read more

I have recently gotten a comment about my “A reminder of the Truth” blog. Originally I wasn’t going to respond because the critique had little to do with my writing and more to do with excerpts I had taken from my mother’s journal entries while she was visiting me in India. This blog is mine. Not my Mothers. While I am up for any public criticism of what I write, I will not subject my mother to them. She did not ask for her blogs to go public but has graciously agreed to having me post them. But…the comments that Ashish made stirred something up in me. So I felt the need to respond. Below you will see the original entry pulled from Janine’s journals followed by the comment from Ashish…and my reaction below. "We are ... read more

My, oh my. Its been a while. Way to long....My last few months have been busy.... My parents visited in October for 2 weeks. (saw 4 tigers!) 4 days later my cousin Beth came for a visit...and stayed for 3 weeks! (oh we had so much fun!) 2 days later I left for a month long visit at home in the US. (home sweet home!!) We arrived back to Delhi just in time for a quiet Christmas and New Years. And on January 9th my brother and sister-in-law came for a visit. (explored Delhi and an old palace) (oh and for about 2 weeks I had no recollection of my user name/password for signing on to the blog...big oops!) Its no excuse for not writing...but I'll do my best this week to get this thing up ... read more

By brother Joe and his wife Candace came for a visit early in 2008. They made a stop in London first...and more than their share of travel issues...but made it to us right on time on October 9th. We had a great time with them and Joe did a wonderful job telling the story of their trip. "As we were leaving the airport Jennifer asked if we were hungry, we said yes and decided our first stop in Delhi would be the America Club (a part of the US embassy). On our drive over I was surprised by many of the sites and sounds of Delhi, there are a huge number of people here. I would imagine it would be difficult to figure out an exact number because many live in shanty towns along the highways ... read more

I must say traveling from Varanasi and then to Rishikesh its hard to believe we were on the banks of the same river. In Rishikesh the Mother Ganga is much closer to its source...it is beautiful and clean....and fresh. We took the train to Haridwar which went very smoothly...we met our contact at the train station and began our 90 minute drive up into the hills past Rishikesh to the Himalayan Hideaway. The 90 min drive was made an hour longer by a pretty bad traffic jam. The culprit? A large truck had dropped his axle just feet away from the railroad crossing. Men were gathering about and that axle was being changed right there on the street. After we passed that congested and smog filled mess were were up and away to our retreat at ... read more

Mom took quiet a bit of heat from her Varanasi posting. In the entry below she defends her statements. I honestly believe and back up her interpretations of Varanasi...it is a tough place to see. It is a representation of India. This is a third world country and like every other country on this planet they have their social/economic issues. Everyday I leave my house I see things that I wish I didn't have to see. The mother with her baby begging. The men/women and children living on the streets with nothing more than a blanket to their name. The list goes on and on. But the fact of the matter is that this IS India. And I know I'll be better off as a human having seen these things. Yes things are changing, infrastructure is ... read more

The second adventure for my parents and myself (Dan stayed behind to work) was a two day trip to Varanasi. For those of you that dont know here is a excerpt from Varanasicity.com "The land of Varanasi (Kashi) has been the ultimate pilgrimage spot for Hindus for ages. Often referred to as Benares, Varanasi is the oldest living city in the world. These few lines by Mark Twain say it all: "Benaras is older than history, older than tradition, older even than legend and looks twice as old as all of them put together". Hindus believe that one who is graced to die on the land of Varanasi would attain salvation and freedom from the cycle of birth and re-birth. The city is a center of learning and civilization for over 3000 years. With Sarnath, the ... read more

After our delayed departure we arrived on the train in relatively good spirits. The train car we were situated in were not exactly the “first class” options we were looking for…but it was relatively clean and - as long as the train started to move in the right direction we were happy! Still recovering from illness I crashed on the top bunk for a few hours. The rest of the crew looked out the window/read travel books and consulted the map. We were interrupted quiet frequently with men walking up and down the isles offering Chi and other food goodies. My theory is that they just couldn’t get enough of the western family traveling on their train. So despite saying no to every one of their offerings, they continued to come back time and time again. ... read more

Our first outing with my parents was to Ranthambhore National Park....we were heading to Khem Villas and planned on enjoying both an early morning and an afternoon Safari. The day didn't really begin as planned.....see excerpts from my mom's journal entry: "Let me just say that we have had some experiences that I cannot do justice to in an e-mail. But, never-the-less I will give you a quick synopsis. The train to reach Ranthambor was really something. First of all....if anyone wants to REALLY see India , they should spend 3 hours at the Delhi train station! Our train was 3 hours late getting to us...no one knew why, and really, no mention was made of it so we sat and watched the events unfold. It was priceless. All the dirt and shit (and I mean ... read more

My parents came for a visit in October. Their trip, sadly, started off my taking me to the hospital. (I guess thats what moms are for, demanding a doctors visit even if you say your fine, but clearly you are not.) My first (and knock on wood only) trip to the hospital here in Delhi was an adventure. Via our companies health system I called a local number and talked to a doctor who got me an appointment with a physician at the best Delhi hospital. My symptoms were 5 days with no appetite and a 101 degree fever. Some head pain....all over blah feeling. I had done some research and decided I had Dengue fever...nobody believed me. My mom came in with me to the doctor and she examined my skin found a rash that ... read more
