I am a high school student at UIC College Prep. I live in chicago in Pilsen and am Mexican. It is important to learn World History because until now, I have pretty much only been taught about U.S. history. I'd like to learn more about the world so I can one day travel and know the history of where I am.

Amnesty International is an organization that fights for the rights given in the Declaration of Human Rights. The organization wants to push for equality among all people regardless of race, gender, etc. Members of this organization do research on different parts of the world to see where they can help. Once a problem is found, they make it known around the world by publishing news about the problems. They take action by getting the attention of government and policy makers. They also try to get as many people involved that can help the situation. I read an article called “Mexico: Freedom of expression still under attack as six journalists killed.” Journalists in Mexico are in very great danger because they are targeted for their writings. They simply write as a form of expression, but there are ... read more

I plan on attending Cornell University in the Fall. I have just acceted the offer and signed up for housing. After researching the differend organizations that are availible to first year students, the following have caught my eye: 1) Quidditch Club- This one stood out to me because I am a Fan of the Harry Potter series. I thought the discription was funny becasue it states, "to introduce Quidditch to the muggle population." Once the group has been running long enugh they plan to start a World Cup. This sound like a fun thing to do. It will also remind me od home becasue I read the books with my sister. 2) I Love Blood- I want to join this one becasue I am interested in becoming a vet. This program helps people who are interested ... read more

Love isn’t for anyone, It is for Everyone It wasn’t too long ago when I didn’t know what being gay meant. I didn’t accept it, I didn’t reject it, and I didn’t mind it. I thought discrimination only came with the color of people's skin. Little did I know that there were people deprived of the rights they deserve just because people think they love the wrong gender. My way of thinking opened up when my best friend came out to me. I can remember all the details of the day she called me. Their was fear and hesitation in her voice as she told me that she thought she was gay. She asked me not to tell anyone. I couldn’t understand why she was so afraid. She was still the same person. She was still ... read more

1) Rev.Marcel Guarnizo was suspended from acting on any priestly duties for different accounts of "intimidating behavior." His banning was provoked by refusing to give communion to a lesbian at her mother's funeral. He also refused to go to the mother's gravesite because he said that the daughter was a sinner for living with a another woman ad going against the church. The archdiocese stated that they do not approve of what the did and that no one should be refused Communion unless they have had a conference with their priest in private. 2) This article related to the problems with religion that we have learned about in class. We have learned of the different conflicts that religion can have on people and how some people are left out. In this article, a woman was discriminated ... read more

1) Modern day slavery is different from earlier forms of slavery because there is not just one group being targeted. Anyone can become a victim of modern day slavery regardless of gender, age, or ethnicity. 2)President Lincoln was the one that created the Emancipation Proclamation that was followed y the abolishment of slavery. However, slavery still exists today. Human trafficking connects to Lincoln because it shows that even though he was supposed to abolish slavery, we haven’t really come so far because slavery still exists. 3) The Polaris project is in charge of a hotline that is available in many countries. Anyone who suspects human trafficking or is a victim of human trafficking is welcome to call. I think this project is a good step towards ending human trafficking. Of course, there are flaws because not ... read more

Mole 1) This is my grandmother's recipe she got from her family in Mexico. 2) My family does I identify with Mole because this is the food my dad and his siblings would eat on special occasions. When my father lived in Mexico, his family was very poor, so they didnt have a lot of money for different foods and usually ate the same things over and over again. The Mole was something my brother and his 11 siblings looked forward to. 3) People should ahve access to a variety of foods becasue it is nice to experience other cultures ad have some variety. Like my fathers family didnt have enough money for a variety of foods, he finds it imortant to try new foods now becasue he can. I think it is important especially since ... read more

Books are banned in highschools becasue there are adults that think the content of the books is inapproprate for the students reading them. For example, the contenent that was being protested n the majority of the books listed in the article was sex, homosexuality, and drugs. I agree that these topics may be controversal, but i do not agree that books witht these topics should be banned. Doing so is ignorent of the writers that are trying to get their message out. Also, I do not agree becasue these are everyday topics, and limiting these books will limit the students' ways of thinking. It is ironic how parents are against the reading of these subjects, but they are fine when thier child rots thier brian wathcing televison on these subjects. Parents pressure teachers on what ... read more

She wasnt aloud to really allowed to go out with friends, but she got to hang out after school every once and a while. 5) She mostly played in front of her house. She had four other siblings so sometimes they would play games. They would also feed birds. When she got the chance, she went out for sweets with her friends after school.
