2 Jeniuses abroad

We are Katie Miller and Michael Kirby from Northampton England. We have packed up our day jobs in order to go travelling round (some of) the world. We will be starting our tavels on 12th September 2011 heading to Beijing. Following this we are planning on heading west and south across China before going to Vietnam, Cambodia, Laos, Thailand. Then flying to Austrailia and then New Zealand before we come home via San Fransico.

(PS. the "jeniuses" is ironic!!)

10/02/12 Alice springs, weird, weird and weird. We arrived and got on the airport shuttle bus. The driver asked us where we were from. We told him England and he said, in extremely strong Ozzie accent “so, you’ve cam to see ya facking convict cousins then have ya?” Charming, but actually despite the coarseness he was a really nice guy and gave us a free short sightseeing tour on the way in pointing out where everything…or in Alice Spring’s case nothing really….was. We were dropped off at our lovely hostel called Alice Springs secret backpackers before heading off to get some food. Alice Springs has a very strange and slightly scary atmosphere. There are a lot of aboringals who sleep, sit, drink, fight with each other and mutter to themselves everywhere also it has white ozzies ... read more

Arriving in Perth, Australia 28/01/2012 After a good old fashioned flight and seeing the grooviest man ever, with his long wavy hair, slick trousers and shoes, smart shirt unbuttoned showing his magical gold medallion on top of his mighty manly hairy chest. I really, really struggled to keep Katie away from that “hunka monka” as Katie would say. We then queued and queued and queued to get through customs which seemed to take longer as I needed a wee really, really badly. We had to queue to get our stamp and then we had to queue to go through quarantine as we had been trekking in Thailand and may have infected boots. 45minutes of queuing and a quick glance from the quarantine guy at our shoes he let us through and we caught the shuttle bus ... read more

17th-20th Khao Lak and Similan Islands Oh night buses, what a joy! This was Helen’s first Asian night bus experience and she was in for a treat. Nice karaoke style programme on the TV, until lights and TV were all turned off at 8pm and the snoring started. She also had the added pleasure of sitting next to a woman who had a child on her lap. Luckily she was a nice lady and a pretty well behaved child. We were woken up half way through the night for a compulsory pit stop, everyone off, “no you cannot stay on the bus and yes you must take your complimentary smelly milk drink things, all three of them.” After a confused half an hour or so Helen decided she would buy a neck pillow to help her ... read more

Chiang Mai 8th-11th January So, on to Thailand. This was a very short boat border crossing and was probably our simplest so far. It was also the last time we would see the Mekong Delta…. Bye bye lovely Mekong! When we arrived on dry land Thailand side I did my usual of saying Thank you in Laotian to the border guard. Every time I’ve managed to do this without fail, saying Thank you in the last country’s language…idiot! Then we headed off on a minibus journey to Chiang Mai. It didn’t take long to realise that this country has a lot more wealth then any of the other Southeast Asian countries so far, and after two months in the poverty of Cambodia and Laos it was actually quite a culture shock. The roads were massive and ... read more

30th December Journey to Luang Prabang, by minibus again. It was a very bumpy, windy (as in curvy not wind blowing) road as we had been warned but it was also very beautiful. The unsealed roads took us round mountains giving us spectacular scenery. When we arrived we did the tuk-tuk negotiation and were taken to our guesthouse: Sysomophone. This was basically a family’s house with rooms turned into guest rooms. It soon became apparent that the family – dad, mum, sons, grandchildren all slept downstairs in the reception/living room under a huge mosquito net. They did have themselves a T.V though. We got a very warm welcome from the dad/granddad who was, as he informed us proudly, the official owner. He was keen to show us his photo albums which were largely full of passport ... read more

23rd December We were up early for, yep you guessed it another long bus journey!! Off to Laos’ capital City Vientiane! We made sure we got to the bus station nice and early, no idea why we did this we really should know by now that buses in Laos don’t leave on time! We managed not to get conned into buying a ticket for a “V.I.P” bus. A V.I.P bus means nothing – same kind of bus as non-VIP but it’s more expensive. Anyway we spent the first hour rolling and stopping to let more people on, rolling and stopping to put food on, rolling and stopping to put animals on…you get the picture (don’t worry V.I.P bus was doing the same thing right behind us!) In Vientiane we hadn’t booked again so we needed to ... read more

18th December Today we set off for Tha Khaek – another joyful Laos style public transport experience! When we arrived we started usual negotiations with a tuk-tuk driver. It didn’t work-at all! Tuk-tuk driver turned out to have a tuk-tuk big boss and he was very much in charge of his platoon of drivers. When we appealed to other tuk tuk drivers we were shunned! We weren’t being funny, he had asked for an extortionate price even by English standards. He won; we caved as we had no choice. If we had to sum up Tha Khaek in one word I would say “dusty.” “Dust anyone??!” Tha Khaek is full of it. After arriving at our guesthouse we got ourselves dusted off (sorry couldn’t resist) and got some yummy food and contemplated our options for the ... read more

March 23rd 2012

13th December 2011 So, it was time to say Goodbye to Cambodia and Hello to Laos. We had heard so many good things about Laos and were really looking forward to seeing it and getting to meet the reportedly very friendly locals! Unfortunately, it was not to be the most glorious of exits or entrances. We left early from Kratie in a minibus packed to the gills. Usual story, 12 seater with 20 people, plus bags etc. We travelled with our knees tucked under our chins for 2 hours before being told we needed to get off, along with a couple of girls. We were literally in the middle of nowhere. Thankfully, a big bus did show up about 15 minutes later. Then we were ripped off by a "guide" on the bus for the visa. ... read more

7th December 2011 A four hour bus ride to Battambang (town in North West of Cambodia) today. I was feeling worse again and toilet trips were becoming extremely frequent. We spent the afternoon roaming around the rather derelict town. We had pasta for the first time since we'd been away (apart from weird pasta breakfast at Hoi An hotel!) 8th December 2011 Following a recommendation from some fellow travellers we contacted Mr Blue a tuk-tuk driver who did tours of the countryside surrounding Battambang. Mr Blue arrived this morning on a tuk tuk painted black with Batman signs and "The Batmobile" written on it. Mr Blue was also wearing a black eye mask. "I am Mr Blue/Batman" he told us! Brilliant!! We knew it was going to be an entertaining day! First stop was the infamous ... read more

29th November. Bye bye kampot! With heavy hearts we packed up and got a bus back to phnom penh. When we arrived we were greeted by the usual hoard of tuk tuk drivers. They managed to get to us despite the bus driver-s efforts at keeping them back with barriers! Usual haggling ensued then off we went. However our tuk tuk driver was a bit lost so we had to shout directions from the back, starting to feel like locals now! We tried to go out for a picnic after checking in but this turned out to be a bad idea. It was ridiculously hot, so we got another tuk tuk back and then sat watching the killing fields movie with dinner. 30th November Another long bus journey but to new places, Siem Reap. At a ... read more
