The following is written by Michael James Kirby, typed up and edited by Katherine Miller!!!! Cambodia. 16th november. After arriving in Phnom Penh and negotiating the price with a tuk tuk driver we took our first tuk tuk to our hostel. It was a great way to see phnom penh and to take in all the sights and sounds. When we arrived at our hostel we were greeted by some staff namely two small, very hyper cambodian girls who kept telling us how happy they were to meet us. After climbing up some very steep and wobbly stairs to put our bags in our room we came back down and had our first cambodian beer (or a few) at the hostel bar and sorted out plans for the next few days. 17th november After some breakfast ... read more

OK next entry, hey we are only 2 months and 2 weeks behind now.....maybe we will catch up at some point!!! 11th November Another long bus journey, this time to Ho Chi Minh city (formerly known as Saigon), which is the capital. As we arrived closer to hcmc the rain started to come down and it looked as though it had been raining there all day. On the way our journey was hampered by a river running through the road. We looked out to see locals on scooters and motorbikes still trying to ride through the water which was coming up to the tops of their legs! We saw one woman clinging onto her child trying to ride her motorbike (which of course was laden with boxes) through the water. To be honest she wasn't doing ... read more

5th november Arrived tired and dirty in nha trang at about 6am. Luckily we had arranged to be picked up by our hotel for free and could check into our room. After a catch up on some sleep we headed out to see nha trang...not much to see really! It was very humid and hot so we went to the beach. In the evening we found a bar showing football. It was full of ex pats and young vietnamese girls serving drinks. Lots of the old eat sweaty men were hugging and touching the girls...grim! Unfortunately we didn.t get to see much of the game because an english woman and her scottish husband living in nha trang decided to tell us all the things they had done in south east asia and what we should do. ... read more

Sorry guys we've been pretty slack at the blog, mainly due to being pretty busy and also due to lack of internet resources. Michael: 21st October: The bus ride to hanoi was easy, we got dropped off for a free lunch and then taken to the boarder crossing. we passed immigration with great success and we're now in vietnam!! we got our bus at the border which took us into Hanoi. We arrived in Vietnam and were greeted by numerous people shouting "TAXI" we ignored them said our farewells to Bruce and Jody and flagged down our own. After being ripped off by the taxi driver who pretended he got lost and forgot what street we said we checked into our hostel and headed out into the very hectic streets of Hanoi. Crossing the street was ... read more

Wow, we've been a bit behind with our entries whilst we've been in Vietnam, we will try and catch up at some point! 21st October: Time to leave china and catch our 0730 bus to Hanoi. we woke nice and early and headed downstairs to leave but we were approached by Jody who told us that the key had snapped off in the lock and that was the only exit!!!! we enquired about the fire exit but soon discovered it only went up to the roof, v.v handy! it was 0700 and it was a 15min walk to the bus station so we were all worried about missing our bus but our hostel lady assured us that it would be fine and we could catch the 8am bus but when we asked her would we get ... read more

11th October we bid farewell to Lijiang and flew to Kunming. After some difficulty with the directions to the hostel (I blame the hostel directions which told us to get off the bus after 3 stops...this completely messed us up, and they didn't tell us we needed to cross the road to catch the next bus...) and lots of wandering around in the heat with heavy backpacks and sore legs we eventually made it to our hostel. We had a private room, not as luxurious as it sounds, it was a bit smelly, but can't complain for the price. Also the view from the roof top bar was quite cool overlooking the city. We had a yummy mushroom casserole dish which we cooked our meat and veg (not meant to sound rude) in, a bit like ... read more

21st september Last night in Pingyao we decided to hit the "Sakura" bar and watched some singing (karoke?) by a couple of chinese girls who were pretty good and were grabbing the attention of some older men wandering by. After a few too many beers we decided to head back but then we dumped into Kristen, James and a german guy and ended up going back to the bar. When we finally left the bar around 1:45 everywhere was bordered and locked up, it was pitch black. while katie was a little (lot) drunk she was wandering down the street singing "harmony, harmony, where are you" we eventually found our guesthouse and banged on the door and mr deng the owner answered in his string vest and told us to "hush hush" which forced katie into ... read more
