DAY 62 This morning we had a great breakfast again. Angie had French toast and scramble eggs and more toast and Francine had cereal, fresh fruit and yogurt and Vegimite on toast again, much to Angie's disgust but definitely glad she is not eating this stuff. The main ingredient is yeast extract. And it's suppose to have lots of vitamins and minerals. Today we are off to Pamlukkale, so we board a bus for the 3 hour trip. We arrive at about noon. We have to find a bus right away that will take us on to Fethiye at around 5:00pm. We check 3 places and take the one that was 5 TL cheaper and offered us a shower when we return from the springs. It is just a short walk to the base of the ... read more

DAY 56 GOOD MORNING ISTANBUL! The porter comes around waking all of us about 30 minutes before embarking at the station. We arrive on the Asian side of Istanbul, Turkey and leave the station and proceed directly to the ferry that will take us to the European side of Istanbul. We are finding it hard to multi task. We're trying to struggle with our bags, take photos and hurry about to be where we need to be. But the first views of Istanbul are amazing. Leaving the ferry we have a short walk up the hill to our hotel. We are staying in the tourist area and it is only a short walk to all the tourist sights in the city. They have a very modern tram system that speeds thorough the streets and you always ... read more

DAY 54 This is the most unusual place in the world. The valley is filled with dome like towers that command the landscape. We take an early morning walk through Love Valley. You will see in the pictures the reason for the name. However the locals have a more descriptive name for this valley. There are abandoned cave homes throughout the area. The valley is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Most people have been relocated to more modern homes. But there are still about 3 families that still live and farm in this valley and in their cave homes although they have strict guidelines to follow due to it being a heritage site. On the way back into town, we stopped at the local market for fruit and Francine bought some special tea that had ... read more

DAY 51 Today we crossed the border from Syria into Turkey. We were warned that this could be a lengthy process with the Americans being the ones most scrutinized. The truth is that things went very smoothly for us Americans and everyone else but for May from Malta. No one at the border seemed to know what to do with a Maltese passport and it took time to locate the “special” stamp and to get a refund for money given for a visa. The border crossing included walking to several buildings to get a health check, pay departure tax, buy a visa and customs inspection. The entire process was only 2 hours. Rather short process according to our tour leader, Jess. our first stop after entering Turkey was to view an ancient monastery and to see ... read more

DAY 49 First thing after breakfast heading on a 10 minute walk down the hill to Krak de Chevaliers. It is the most famous medieval citadel in the world. It is an amazing castle within a castle. The small original castle was built by the Kurds and then enlarged by the Arabs then became the castle it is today when the crusaders occupied it in the 1100's. It has 13 huge towers and could accommodate 5000 soldiers. It was a place where Richard the Lion Hearted fortified himself along with the Knights of the Round table with the parts of the table still intact. The castle was never taken by force because it was protected by being built upon a steep mountain top and had an outer and inner defense wall. The Sultan Beybars recovered the ... read more

DAY 47 This morning is a free day in Damascus. We take our time and then head off for Francine to pay and collect her jewellery. Love it and bought another ring as a gift. We head off in taxis for the public intercity bus station. We have booked seats and are off to Palmyra in the northern desert. 3 ½ hours later we arrive in the centre of the Syrian desert. We stay at a quaint hotel and would have been beautiful in the 1950's when first built. You can still see a lot of the art deco finishes. We take a wander along the main street and Angie buys a pair of earrings made from camel bone. The shopkeeper tells her he has given special price as he is having a closing down going ... read more

DAY 45 Today we say goodbye to Jordan and head off to Syria. INFO Syria has a coast line on the Mediterranean. It is bordered by the countries of Turkey, Iraq, Lebanon, Jordan, Palestine and Israel. Syria is a dictatorship. The previous president (Hafaz) was a true dictator and ruled with an iron fist. In saying this he also brought stability to the country as for thirty years prior to his rule there had been many coups. Not long before his death the President's eldest son and heir, which he had been grooming for the role was killed in a car accident. He then hurriedly commenced grooming his second son, Bashar Al-Assad (which means the lion) to take over as President. He has made some major changes to Syria for the better, including opening up the ... read more

DAY 44 Today is Sunday and we have the opportunity to go this mornings Mass at St. George's Church, a Greek Orthodox church. It is also famous for housing an ancient mosaic map of Jerusalem. We dress in skirts, shirts and head scarves. Our leader said we did not need the scarves but we felt we should respect the religion as we had seen some of the local women wear them. Mass starts at 7am and goes to 10am, We get there about 8:15 and stay till 9:00. The women sit in the middles rows of pews and the men sit on the right side of the church. The church is elaborately decorated with hanging lamps and lights, mosaics and painted pictures on the walls. The altar is hidden behind a panel of doors with only ... read more
