Saigon... holy hell. Though there's lots of difference between Bangkok and Saigon, the main one is the fact that the traffic here is about 1000x worse than in Bangkok, and it's ALL motorcycle/moped traffic. It's absolutely insane. Trying to cross the road turns into doing a strange, jerky waltz and hoping to hell that you don't get mowed down by a psycho on a moped. I took a short video of one of the intersections a block away from our guesthouse, but I can't really figure out how to post it. If I can get it working, I'll post a link to the video soon. Until then, pictures will have to suffice! The first day in Saigon consisted of catching up on sleep and wandering around the 3 or 4 streets that make up the area ... read more

What a country! What a place! I absolutely love it. The people are brilliant, the scenery is out of this world, the culture, the craziness; it's all just so... so... ASIAN! Finally a country with both a safe infrastructure and a crazy dangerous blend of the eastern world with western influences. Thankfully not too western though. Both Helen and I are very glad that Vietnam was our last country in SE Asia because it is simply manic, crazy! Everyone wants something from you - whether it is your money or a simple broken English conversation... everyone is moving, jostling, eating, drinking... you can't walk on the path because families are cooking their food on them; you can't walk on the roads because there are more bikes than mosquitos. Walking is by far the most dangerous hazard ... read more

Arrived in Saigon very early after the sleeper train and after checking into our hotel we headed to the Cu Chi tunnels. this is a huge network of underground tunnels where the vietnamese hid and fought from during the war. the network is really extensive but the spaces are very small and claustrophobic. (and filled with bugs!! you will probably be seeing a common theme in all of my blogs about bugs!!) Also visited the War museum today which was very harrowing - so many innocent people killed and very graphic photos to show it. Tuesday was the Mekong Delta and we took a boat along the Mekong River and saw floating markets, a coconut candy factory, popcorn factory (lots of free samples!) and rowed a sanpan whilst wearing a conical hat! We stayed with a ... read more

"Cigarette" "no thanks", "cyclo" "no thanks", "fruit" "no thanks", "sunglasses" "no thanks", "moto" "no thanks" "marijuana" "no thanks", "boom boom" "no thanks"...it seems as soon as you have shaken one hawker off another one is on you. But everyone in Vietnam wants to talk to you whether it is to sell you somthing, to practice their English or simply to have a Westerner say hello... I don't know why but when we touched down in a monsoon-soaked Ho Chi Minh airport on the last day of May I hadn't expected much. How wrong I was! What a great country! Its got everything, manic cities, stunning scenery, beautiful beaches, delicious food and most of all people who are bursting with energy and friendliness. One of the nice things about travelling is meeting up with people from home ... read more

Kane Waiting for a girl we are travelling with so thats why I'm posting. Got cut off once on the plane over, but just went to different crew members for drinks. We are staying in Chinatown of Saigon and went Exploring last night, after talking to alot of locals, one of them organised a cab for us to go somewhere to dance. We ended up at Gossip. This place was balistic. A Dance club for locals, sure the alcohol was Sydney club prices except for Cognac which was about 20% of the Aussie price but the venue and music was one of the best I've been to in a year or two. I lost my watch last night. I left it in a hotel and when I went back I couldn't even find the hotel. Good ... read more

Hello Everybody, It has been a little while since I last wrote. Hopefully this website will work okay and will be easy to manage for both you and me. I am fairly computer illiterate so this is somewhat of an acheivement for me if it works. Right now we are in Mui Ne (pronounced moo-nay) which is in South Vietnam and it is our third day here. It is a nice "beachy" place again and it is a lot nicer than Sihanoukville where we had been staying before in Cambodia. It is a lot cleaner and there are hardly any hawkers (I have only seen two and they didn't even bother me!) Since having last written I turned the big 3-0 and it really was pretty painless. Thank you again for all your e-cards and birthday messages. ... read more

We arrived right in the middle of the backpacker area of Saigon (as the locals still refer to it) in the early evening giving us enough time to check into a guesthouse and get some food before getting some much-needed sleep. The Pham Ngu Lao area (still no idea how you say it!) is definitely geared up to tourists - plenty of western food and crafts shops - but has it's fair share of locals enjoying the cheap beer so it's a pretty nice atmosphere. On our first full day here we decided to visit the War Crimes Museum which is an undeniably one-sided look at the Vietnam war (it used to be called the Musem of Chinese and American War Crimes) and doesn't give a particularly good overview of the war, but it has some ... read more

Saigon (April 24 - April 30) Note: We have referred to Ho Chi Minh City throughout our blog as Saigon for three reasons: (i) It's shorter and so requires less typing from us, (ii) Most people that we have met in Southern Vietnam also call it Saigon and (iii) Roger refuses to use the name given the city by communists. We really enjoyed our time in Saigon and liked it much more than Bangkok. It’s a pretty city and from the area around Pham Ngu Lao in District 1, a nexus of backpacker friendly accommodations and services, you can walk to most of the places that you would want to go (although there are many motos and taxis for hire as well). We felt like Saigon (more than anywhere else we have been so far) is ... read more

Whilst we have been travelling we had heard several stories of how dangerous and dodgy Saigon was, so it was with some trepidation that we arrived off our bus after dark. Fortunately most of these stories were largely unfounded (we only saw 1 drive-by robbery in the 2 days we were there) and we really enjoyed the city. The first morning we were feeling energetic so decided to do a walking tour of the city to take in all the major sights. The tour took us around 7 hours to complete as we were interrupted by a massive thunder and lightning storm and had to hide out in a cafe for about an hour. We managed to see the municipal theatre, Notre Dame Cathedral (Vietnam style), Post Office, Reunification Palace (couldn't get in as it was ... read more
