Halong Bay The whole purpose of coming to Hanoi was to see Halong Bay.. The bus picked me up at 0800 hrs, collected a few others and we headed off to Halong Bay before 0900 hrs. It was slow progress as there was lot of traffic moving slowly.after an hour and a half we stopped at an artists' center. There were a lot of statues of great quality and also a hadicrafts emporium and jewellery making workshop. The quality of worknanship was of high caliber. One could see the artists at work. There was also a lot of embroidery work in progress on dresses and poster art. As buying nothing on the tour had to be strictly adhered to I did not buy anything. It took us another two hours to get to Ha Long. After ... read more
Even after travelling in different parts of the world the airport security never ceases to amaze me. Every airport is slightly different, you can never fully anticipate what what you exaclty need to do. May be that is intentional to keep those targetted guessing, I don't know. Some places you can keep your computer in the bag, other places they have to be scanned seperately. Some require you to take everything out of your pockets, even your hankys before the body scan. In other places you can even wear your belt with a large buckle. In Cairnes I saw a guy putting his duty free through the scanners without any doubt. I myself had forgotten to drink the water in the bottle and it had nearly a litre in it. It did not cause any problems ... read more

©devoncalling2012 Long-haired Dictionaries Within a few days of arriving in Vietnam most of the western males who were travelling alone have acquired a long-haired dictionary. For those in need of an explanation, this is a local girl who can speak English. She may not end up with the new passport she would have liked but at least she gets a nice holiday, all expenses paid. These are the paperback dictionaries. The hardback version has found a westerner with a contract or business in the country. Marriages are not uncommon nor is the transmogrification from sweet-compliant to concerned But what is... read more
So Hanoi quickly proved quite Hanoi-ing (lol... nah this joke has lost its former glorious lustre). A motorbike taxi took me a short way to a crappy overpriced hotel and had the audacity to complain I was being cheap (AND under claimed about what I actually gave him to the hotel people as Vietnamese and English was used in this convo and I can count in Vietnamese...) but I figured I'd stay there one night as I needed some sleep. RIGHT NOW. Heaps upon loads of tourists clogging up MY touring time (basterds...) in Hanoi. I experienced ripoff after scam after time waste after moron and was pretty sick of the place within 12 hours. I did manage to find a good dude in a travel agency what also was a hotel and resolved to move ... read more

Still alive after local food and traffic!

So keep posted fella's, we'll miss ya! Cheers, Anouksken & Wouter.... read more
Parental apologies for the sudden cessation of the blog we understand that this might have caused some concern. We really hadn’t realised that Western Australia (WA) was going to be quite so limiting as far as communications were concerned, and should have guessed this given our plan to camp in the wild and also the geographical isolation of the state. Sophie will finish off our trip to Vietnam, the final few days were spent at Halong Bay. We had hoped to do a separate page of photos of the different ethnic groups in Vietnam but now find ourselves completely confused with the intricacies of dress, so it’s difficult to identify some of the different groups. Anyway, we will give it a shot over the coming weeks. Sophie and Jonathan also have to do a presentation in ... read more
Hanoi Next up was Hanoi. I'll lay my cards on the table and say that I loved Hanoi. It was a bit cold, a little bit run down and definitely not an immediately pleasant city to walk around. But it has a certain character that's massively lacking in HCMC. I did the usual touristy stuff with the museums, and the Ho Chin Minh Mausoleum, including his residence and the surrounding area. All very pleasant and if you're interested in history (which I am). The old quarter of Hanoi was easily my favourite part. It's a labyrinth of cobbled streets lined with tiny shops/stalls selling everything from fish, clothing, dried food, cafes/bars, street food etc, the kind of stuff you come across many Asian cities. The night life doesn't last much later than midnight but the tiny ... read more
