WHAT A FANTASTIC DAY!!! Yes, I have had an amazing day and am just so glad Robyn and Peter invited me to join them on their holiday as it got me here and I am having wonderful experience. So here is my day..... Started with breakfast with Robyn and Peter, missed my walk as I slept like I had died last night which was what I needed. We then set off for the tailors to pick up our dresses, which look amazing by the way! Much to Robyn's horror we had to go via bike and we set off at a great pace zipping through the traffic and closing our eyes as our drivers dodged other bikes, buses and cars, but we arrived safely at the destination, even if a bit hot and sweaty. We tried ... read more

After completing a year of teaching in northern Vietnam, I have had one of the most interesting years of my life. Not only did I unexpectedly fall in love with Ha Noi, I have met amazing people, lived like a king, and picked up British vernacular. Ha Noi is the charismatic capital of Vietnam, where you can explore and achieve your dreams but can also have a lethargic effect. If there is a lack of self motivation, you can find yourself stuck in a rut. On the contrary, if you have aspirations, Ha Noi is a great avenue to explore them. People are doing great things. I even got work as a photographer and sold photos at an auction! I would love to share my Ha Noi with you all. If anyone is interested in going, ... read more

Still alive after local food and traffic!

So keep posted fella's, we'll miss ya! Cheers, Anouksken & Wouter.... read more

Right back with the blog i was finnishing the next day about a week ago. I have sorted out the laptop ( when i say "I have" i mean of course a 12 year old in a shop did it for me) so fingers crossed all should be OK. So after Hue it was a long not very nice 14 hour bus ride up to Hanoi. I,m staying at a small place in the old quarter called "The Posh Hotel" i think Posh is pushing it abit but it is very nice. I'm on the 5th floor and have a balcony which is nice except the balastrade around it is only about 2 foot 6 high puts the wind right up me standing out there, convinced i'm going to go kerpertaling over the edge. Spent about ... read more

I have to admit, while I did miss the comforts of a hotel (small luxuries like a tv and private bathroom) hostel accommodation isn't really that bad. I was woken up regularly with people coming in and out and looking for something that was clearly right at the bottom of their bag, but generally the bed was comfy. I was in the Hanoi Backpackers Hostel Downtown in the Old Quarter and gets great reviews online - I second them. Today I was meeting up with a travel mate from an organisation called Hanoi kids. I had a few hours free first though so headed out to the streets for a wander. I am no longer phased by the motorbikes and feel confident walking through the streets without getting knocked over, but it does still amuse me ... read more

When I last wrote I had just arrived in Hoi An. A book I have with me says its like walking into a museum piece and that about sums the place up. The old town sits on the Thu Bon River and is a Unesco world heritage site. It is unbeleable pretty or maybe quaint even twee. Its rammed ful of tourists and almost feels like a Disney version of Vietnam. Its nice enough in the day but really looks its best at night when all the shops, bars and restaurants have coloured chinese latterns hanging out side and the river is full of little paper rafts with candles on. Sounds like the sort of place i'd normally avoid like the plague but for all its slightly false feel I had a great time and stopped ... read more

Back again at last avid readers. Slight delay as it took us some time to find a computer that we could understand but we are now on our last ful day in hanoi after some more superlative adventures. Last day in Chiang Mai went to Orchid Farm and humongous waterfall in national park - lovely. Walked our socks off first day in Hanoi. Fascinating and crazy city (cue amazing Blog Fact - Hanoi has 9 million inhabitants and 6 million motorcycles!!...and they are everywhere. If Ho Chi Min City is "worse" ...can't wait!!). Went to oldest temple in Hanoi - closed on Mondays! Ho-hum. Temple of Literature beautiful - 5 courtyards with gorgeous flowers, ancient architecture including tablets of stone set on stone turtles with the names of the the scholars/graduates from the temple. All based ... read more

Day 131 (Tues 15thJan) So this blog starts with the overnight bus from Vientiane to Hanoi. Myself and Megan got picked up around tea time from our hostel. We got driven maybe an hour to the bus station which housed all the night buses to various locations in Vietnam, Cambodia and Thailand. The bus left the terminal around half 6. We were on a sleeper bus. I was hoping for a bed, but what we got was a reclining chair and legroom. The chair was reclined nearly flat but not quite, so you were still sort of sat upright, which made it awkward trying to sleep. There also is adequate leg room for an Asian, not so much a westerner. I struggled for space the entire trip and got no sleep whatsoever. All the westerners were ... read more
