Try to make the most of 4 weeks annual leave and travel overseas from Australia. One day a belated "Gap Year" is on the cards but until then, must make do! Have visited parts of Thailand, Vietnam, Malaysia, United States and New Zealand - plenty more on the horizon!

We woke to an amazing breakfast of pancakes, honey and banana - such a great way to start the day. Then our 6km trek began and this was very different to yesterday's walk! Thanks to the rain yesterday, and the already uphill route, we were in for both a treat and a challenge! My friends this time were Mo and Chi, Chi was 27 and Mo was 60 and my god these women are unstoppable! The trek was very muddy and slippery in much of the path and when you step in the wrong section of mud, you sink deep (from experience!). They show you where to put your feet, they pull you up high sections, they help you balance along the thin rice paddy ledges and hold your hand most of the way. And they ... read more

I have to admit, while I did miss the comforts of a hotel (small luxuries like a tv and private bathroom) hostel accommodation isn't really that bad. I was woken up regularly with people coming in and out and looking for something that was clearly right at the bottom of their bag, but generally the bed was comfy. I was in the Hanoi Backpackers Hostel Downtown in the Old Quarter and gets great reviews online - I second them. Today I was meeting up with a travel mate from an organisation called Hanoi kids. I had a few hours free first though so headed out to the streets for a wander. I am no longer phased by the motorbikes and feel confident walking through the streets without getting knocked over, but it does still amuse me ... read more

North America » United States » New York » New York » Manhattan August 13th 2012

I got up early on our first day and went for a jog along broadway near our hotel. It was so peaceful and I was surprised to see so many recognisable things from media - yellow school buses, stairs leading to the subway, familiar store names. I really enjoyed this hour. It was quieter than I imagined, New York is known as the place that never sleeps but there were only handfuls of people around, buying breaky from street carts, walking their dogs etc. Our first day in the Big Apple kicked off with a walk along broadway from our hotel. We found a $1 pizza slice store and thought it was like nirvana! Amazing taste for a buck! Then we took a subway ride to the Staten Island Ferry. We found the metro card and ... read more

It's a long trip from Brisbane to NYC! From door to door it was about 24 hours, a good prelude to any Europe trips ahead I guess. This trip was a year in the making and consisted of BJ and I as well as my sister and brother in law - we couldn't wait! We flew Virgin and thought it was comfortable with good entertainment. The snacks kept us going between meals too - recommend this airline for long haul. We signed up to their Velocity points also which landed us a free return domestic flight when we got home (as we built up enough points with all the domestic flights too). After a frantic rush to our NYC bound flight, we made it with moments to spare and braced ourselves for the last few hours ... read more

Asia » Vietnam » Mekong River Delta » Can Tho August 24th 2011

We used the same tour company that we did Cu Chi with to do a day tour to the Mekong Delta. We stopped along the way to handicapped handicrafts warehouse and was pleased to contribute to the welfare of these workers, who had suffered from Agent Orange and other war related causes. We watched as they made beautiful handicrafts and purchased a three piece artwork with duck eggshell. (Note to Australians, customs will seize duck egg shell products for treatment at a cost of about $160! There is a slight yellow tinge on them now - we also bought a vase with no shell and it's just as beautiful and memorable with no dramas involved. Stay away from the shell, despite what the sales staff tell you). Our day along the Mekong was lovely but not ... read more

Asia » Vietnam » Southeast » Ho Chi Minh City » Cu Chi August 23rd 2011

Nothing can prepare you for Ho Chi Minh city in my opinion! I am nuts about travel research before going on holidays and knew Ho Chi Minh was known for it's motorbikes, but jumping in our cab at the airport we were gobsmacked at the bikes riding inches away. Hundreds of them! As I write this the beeping noises are still stuck in my head. Ho Chi Minh traffic is CRAZY! I dreaded the idea of crossing a road. We spent the day resting and then went out to book a tour for CuChi the next day. We were dreading the first intersection and sure enough, the moment came pretty quickly. Just as we were about to cross, a local told us to follow him. With hearts beating out of our chest and quiet prayers to ... read more

This was supposed to be the highlight tour of our 2 weeks - the 7 tier waterfall hike at Erawan falls and swimming, Bridge over River Kwai and the train journey over Death Railway. Sadly, things didn't go to plan. I had researched so much for this trip - finally deciding on a private tour customised to our needs. I didn't go high end with tremendous reviews from Trip Advisor and in hindsight, I should have. I arranged a private driver from a tour agency in Sukhumvit and stated the three must dos for the day. With BJ suffering more than just a hangover from the Muay Thai night (turns out he one too many ice cubes in his whiskey and suffered from the stomach bug that results) the day was already starting on edge hoping ... read more

Asia » Thailand » Central Thailand » Bangkok August 20th 2011

You can't be in Bangkok on a weekend and not hit Chatuchak Market - unless you've hit Muay Thai and drinks the night before that is, and experiencing your own version of the "The Hangover". It was evident BJ was staying in today and I wasn't going to waste a day in Bangkok. I continued with my plan to go to Chatuchak market, said to be one of the largest markets in SE Asia. Despite everything I had read, I figured I could walk in an organised fashion to cover off everything, and gauge prices before going back to a stall I favoured. Huh! This place is cannot be comprehended. It's not like a market you or I are accustomed to at home - neat aisles that you can browse up and down - no - ... read more

Asia » Thailand » Central Thailand » Bangkok August 19th 2011

Today was all about getting to the 'must see' and cultural activities that are scattered around one particular area of Bangkok, about 20 minutes from our hotel in Ploenchit. On the list were the Grand Palace, Wat Pho, Khlongs and the Amulet Market. We had a great breakfast thanks to the Renaissance Ratchaprasong Hotel - I don't recall eating again until 9pm! Having arrived at the hotel after midnight, been upgraded to a suite, enjoyed a breakfast fit for kings and generally lapping up the beautiful 5 star decor I think we momentarily forgot we were in SE Asia when we jumped into our cab and stated The Grand Palace as our destination and blissfully went on our way. Halfway through our journey BJ turned to me and whispered "the meter isn't on". I was actually ... read more

Asia » Malaysia » Penang » George Town August 18th 2011

Taking advantage of a $9 flight to Penang, I eagerly booked us a flight for our last day in Malaysia months ago, and having now done it, regret not rearranging the KL trip to include a trip to Cameron or Genting Highlands instead. The cheap flight turned into an expensive day out after booking a private car, paying for lunch and souvenirs and all the extras that come with hanging around in airports for hours. What was most frustrating was that the tour drove us around part of Penang Island, and the driver whose English was very average, just pointed things out. We stopped once for breakfast at his family's restaurant (very nice Chinese food which we otherwise wouldn't have experienced), a stop for the train up the Penang Hill and a look around, a stop ... read more
