Just the other day, someone asked about my best sandwich ever. I have given it some thought, and here are my answers. I had to categorize my answers, as the sandwich spectrum is just too broad. Best Banh Mi Without a doubt, it was in Hanoi, about a block from my Old Town hotel. I have been there on two different trips, and the taste and quality are outstanding. Cars drive by, run in and pick up a "to go" bag, so it must be well accepted by the locals. The pork banh mi has moist meat, flavorful condiments, and the best pickled radish. One sandwich is not enough, but two is way too much. Best Burger Hands down, the best burger we ever had was at the El Tovar Dining Room at the Grand Canyon. ... read more

Monday 26 May 2014. It’s day two of our latest trip around South East Asia, and we’ve just landed in Hanoi. Hanoi’s current weather – a combination of high temperatures, high humidity and rain storms, ensures our flight somewhat bumpy. Some might prefer the term terrifying. Turbulence is a major factor as we fly over the north of the country, and poor visibility, thunder and lightning, ensured the trip was a test for even the most frequent of flyers. It’s been three and a half years since we were last in Hanoi, and on first impressions, it appears not much has changed. The traffic is chaotic and the temperatures are through the roof. Upon arrival at the Tu Linh Legend hotel, we are warmly welcomed by the staff, who immediately upgrade one of the three rooms ... read more

31stMarch Ha Long Bay, Vietnam At anchor in Ha Long Bay. It was an early start for some people who had opted for an 11 hour tour off to Hanoi, approx 105 miles from the anchorage. We had decided after the previous few days to have a leisurely Junk cruise (another boat) around the bay. From a distance the limestone outcrops look quite mystical in the hazy sun. As soon as we had anchored we had small sampans with children/babies on board begging for anything and this continued the whole day we were in the Bay. Ha Long Bay is located in north-eastern Vietnam and has been designated by UNESCO as a World Natural Heritage Site and tourism is playing an ever-increasing value to the regions economy. Ha Long means ‘where the dragon descends into the ... read more

After a short flight out of Vientiane we were once again moving through border control.....which seemed a lot easier than i thought it would seeing how we were now in a Communist country, and within 10 minutes of landing we were in a taxi heading for the bustling Old Quarter of Hanoi. So far we thought we were getting it too easy, with the Vietnamese visa being a lot easier to get than we thought and then getting through the airport with no problems what so ever we thought Vietnam was going to be an easy place to travel through......that soon changed as soon as we had our first meeting with the North Vietnamese people! Before coming here we had been told by so many people that the people in the North were not very friendly ... read more

One of the most challenging questions that western tourists have to answer when they are planning their first backpacking trip through South East Asia is, “Which countries should I visit during my 3 to 4 week vacation?” In most cases, Thailand is first on the list and this is often due to the fact that Thailand is organized and their tourist infrastructure is fairly well developed. It also doesn’t hurt that Thailand has a world famous nightlife scene. Branching off east from Thailand to Vietnam can also be an equally rewarding experience for tourists. Delicious Vietnamese cuisine is one of the undeniable highlights of the country, but the traffic is also worth the trip in itself. The combination of weaving motorcycles and sporadic honking is entertaining enough that in many cities restaurant seats are orientated such ... read more

We arrived in Hanoi on the 8th Oct after yet more problems with visas - even though Vietnam issues Visa on arrival, you require a letter from the Embassy to say that you are elligible! Mark saved the day finding a website that issued express letters within 30mins. We managed to find a computer to print out the emailed letter and go back to the desk to check in successfully - what a stress! After we finally got through immigration we went to find our preorganised hostel pick up to an empty forecourt. They hadn't sent anyone, but luckily there were a couple of guys going to the same hostel and we shared a taxi into town. On arrival at Hanoi Backpackers we landed right in the middle of the party scene, in a dorm room ... read more

Well, this is the story of the last week of my amazing holiday! Really for me this travel blog is the record for when I am old and want to remember all the fabulous travel stories and adventures that I have had. The ferry ride across to Surathani was uneventful and I was full of excitement about getting in the car and heading off. We jumped on a bus, not at all sure where it was taking us, the driver took all the tickets and we just hoped we would get to the airport to pick up the car. After about 45 minutes we pulled up in the middle of a street, everyone got off the bus so we thought we probably should too! Lucky as our luggage was on the sidewalk, and then the driver ... read more

So arrived back in Hanoi and at the hotel, where they were happy to see me, such a great hotel definitely recommend it and would come back. Room is dominated by this massive bed, which is really comfortable. I sorted out all my stuff, well attempted too anyway, who bought all this junk???? Gave up and decided to go out walking at about 8.00pm when the street life was really alive in the Old Quarter. It is amazing how quickly you work out where you are going, but I have also learnt that if I get lost once I find the lake I can regain my bearings and find my way home again!! Found the night market which was massive. Found a road side stall that was selling sweet corn which the vendor put in the ... read more

After a pretty good sleep on the train considering the accommodation, at 4.30am I heard people walking in the train and talking and thought "wish they would be quiet I am sleeping". Next thing a knock on the door and the conductor says "Hanoi Station". Wow, was that a panic, getting dressed and packed and off the train in about 5 minutes flat! Got off the train, in the middle of a street, not on a station, just in the middle of the street, amazing with people everywhere and me not quite awake. I had to work out where I was, which as it happened was only around the corner from the first hotel where my bag was stored which was so lucky! Picked up my bag and caught a taxi to the new hotel, where ... read more

It was so hard going to sleep last night because I just wanted to go out and explore some more, but eventually I did fall asleep but was awake again at 5.30am!! Fiddled around for a bit and then headed out to explore Hanoi. For such a large city it was really quiet during the night, I slept with the window open and was amazed at how quiet it was. Mind you it makes up for it during the day. So armed with my map, and trusty bottle of water I headed off after a fresh fruit breakfast at the hotel. Even though this is a tiny little hotel the staff are great and very helpful. One of them even running out last night to buy me a travel adaptor so I could charge my electronics!! ... read more
