I know I said I was going to Hanoi, but in all honesty, I spent 1 night there and less than 24 hours. It was a stopover/junction point at best. Upon arriving I booked a Halong Bay tour. Everyone along the way told me that I need to book it for as cheap as I can no matter what the tour selling people say. Every boat is the same, every tour is the same, so don't get screwed by these guys and their photo books of over marvelous adventures. I heeded the advice, and booked it for $40. 2 days, 1 night. Not bad. When I booked the tour, I had low expectations in mind. I didn't even ask what tour did, but made sure I wasn't getting screwed on accommodation, food, and entrance fees. They ... read more

When we arrived in Hanoi, i was not in the best mood as we had had a really long coach journey and i was pretty monged out! So we just had a look around the town which doesnt have a lot but there were a few nice shops selling lanterns etc. Other than that we decided to go on the hunt for ice cream in the evening which took longer than i expected and i didnt even end up getting any! So i ended up going to bed around 9pm!So not the greatest start to Hanoi!lol! The next day though we had booked the Halong Bay boat trip through backpackers hostel which i was so excited about! We were up early as it was a 8am pick up and i loved everything about it from 8am ... read more

Just a quick one today, as the pictures more or less speak for themselves, and to be honest we didn't do much apart from lie on the boat or lie on the beach on Monkey Island! We spent two nights and about three and half days in Halong bay, drifting slowly on the boat during the day and even slower at night. We also visited Cat Ba island, the largest, and only inhabited island in the Bay, where we cycled through the national park. We also visited the "Hospital Cave", which is more or less what it sounds. In the early 60s the cave was transformed into a hospital for serving members of the Vietnamese Army, complete with medics rooms, kitchens, a rest and recuperation room, a conference room and a poool. It is quite an ... read more

(First, just mention that photos have been added to previous post) We arrived in Hanoi early Tuesday morning on the overnight train (4:15 a.m.), to a completely deserted city (what a contrast to Bangkok!), and dozed in our hotel lobby until breakfast at 6:30, then some more until our 8 a.m. departure to Halong Bay, a 3-4 hr. ride. For me, Halong Bay was anticipated to be the "crown jewel" of the trip. It did not disappoint! Arriving at the Halong docks, we were taken by tender to our private "junk" moored in the harbor. There were probably 300 other such boats, of all sizes and descriptions, designed for groups of 1 to 50(??) The scenery was incredible as we set out among the (reportedly) 1969 islands of the Bay. (I'll never forget that number because ... read more

Woke up to Emmo knocking on all of our doors for a breakfast call. We went for an early morning kayak adventure in the bay. I asked Grant to paddle me along cuz I was feeling tired and needed a strong boy to paddle me along. It was so hot and sunny out. We paddled to a spot where there are monkeys hanging out on the cliffs. We all took bananas from breakfast and brought them to feed the monkeys and they came right up to us. So amazing! Got back and tried to sun tan on the boat but Emmo gathered us all together for a speech. He mentioned a nice comment about every single person on tour and got all sentimental; handed out our group photos and handed out envelopes so we could all ... read more

Got a really good night’s sleep so no napping today. Sat near the front of the bus on our 3 and ½ hr drive to Halong Bay. It was a rainy morning but it cleared up as soon as we got on our boat. Our traditional Junk Boat is beautiful! The rooms are super nice and good bathrooms. The upper sun deck was fantastic! We had a full on 5 course seafood meal for lunch and dinner. Not long after we got on the boat, we cruised to a huge cave. It was beautiful and had the most picturesque perfect lookout spot at the end of the walk through the cave. I wanted to stay in that moment forever. After that, back on the boat and cruised onto an island. The island had a nice swimming ... read more

Isn't there some saying that one would rather be in hell with friends than in heaven alone? Or am I getting that mixed up with Twain (or someone) saying hell is being locked in a room with your friends? So there I was, literally in paradise, fabulous boat, amazing cabin, lovely food, cracking wine (we'll come back to that), the service, the weather, the scenery of Ha Long Bay and I was the only person on their own and for the first time this holiday I felt really sad about it. Sad, because it seemed such a waste. All the ingredients that make you feel loving and happy were there and it just seemd such a waste I was alone. I was surrounded by couples sipping champagne, gazing amorously into each other's eyes and no doubt ... read more

Ha Long Bay was amazing. One of the most beautiful places I've ever seen - got some pretty good pics. Got a boat out into the bay and when it docked, we were allowed to jump from the top into the water. I did it twice, not the nicest tasting water ever and was sorta scary. We kayaked later, to a cave and back. Was fun, hadn't done it in years but it was a good way to see the bay and get to the cave. The cave was pretty cool, small so had to crawl a fair bit. It got dark pretty quickly outside so when we kayaked back it was pitch black. Felt a bit unsafe but the guides worked well to keep everyone together and in the end nothing went wrong at all! ... read more

Good Morning (Vietnam), Well we arrived back from Halong Bay yesterday so I thought I should tell you all about our trip! We made the long trip from Hoi An to Hanoi with little problems, I would really recommend the Sinh Tourist sleeper buses, they are by far the cheapest way to get around Vietnam and are pretty comfy! We checked into a guesthouse/hotel which was touted to us at our bus stop-over in Hue (14 hours away from Hanoi, these touts will do anything for some business), and used our first day in Hanoi to book the Halong Bay trip and look around, we haven't liked Hanoi much, everything is just so difficult, its hard to get around, hard to find things, hard to buy relatively normal purchases which we have been able to find ... read more

The next stop on our Vietnamese route was Halong bay. We decided to this differently to the standard tourist tour from Hanoi and instead stayed on Cat Ba island ,the only inhabitable island within the Halong bay NP. Cat Ba was brilliant, really prehistoric looking with mountains and karsts filled with impenetrable jungle, just great!  The majority of the island is made up of the Cat Ba national park and we had read about a "challenging 18km trek" that cuts right through it so we booked onto one straight away! Although tough in parts the trek was amazing, the forest is so dense still and full of wildlife. Our one wish was to see a Cat Ba langur (they are endemic to the island and there are only 62 left in the wild) but we knew ... read more
