Departing from Hanoi we set off for the 4 hour mini-van ride to Halong Bay where our 3 day, 2 night cruise departed from. The beauty and uniqueness of this place cannot be described in words but we'll try... After the 4 hour ride, we set sail through Halong Bay on a motorized "junk" sailboat steering through freighters, tug boats and other ships. As we received our welcome watermelon fruit smoothies - Seth was in heaven... we were already able to see some of the over 1,960 islets of the greater Bay area. Stunning! From afar they appeared as a mountainous range, however, as we neared closer they were in fact massive rocks somewhat covered in greenery jutting out of the water and peaking at heights up to 330 feet. We were on a ship called ... read more

Hey guys, how are you all? I'm on a plane to Da Nang in Vietnam as I write this. We've just got the bus back from Halong Bay which is about 3.5 hours north of Hanoi. Before I tell you all about it.... I've got some good news.......... I now eat seafood! That's right.... me! Girlies, we can now go to a seafood place and I won't be the one to order a steak any more! You may need to help me pull the head off the prawns though if Jas isn't there to do it for me :-) Halong Bay is such a beautiful place, I've never seen anything like it before! There's over 2000 small islands there but they say they only have 1969 because that's the year that Ho Chi Minh died. The ... read more

This trip in last year but I still remember and want to share here so that I can read it again as well as never forget this memorable trip. Not many words to say but my photos will help me! Yeah, I no need to say how beautiful Halong bay is (one of modern wonders of the world) and you can easily find out information about Halong by google search. Mostly of my photos related to my volunteer groups (It seems that I always say about my volunteer group in my entries, of course, it’s one important part of my life)... read more

We spent only 1 night (2 days) in Ha Long day. It was definitely not enough. After leaving Ha Long Bay we returned to Hanoi via a 3 hour minibus ride. It rained on the road and it still amazes me how these people manage to don ponchos while driving their scooters at 40-80km/h. It also never rains with a lightning storm. We have yet to hear thunder, though. Which is odd, because I'm used to seeing lightning and then hearing the thunder a few seconds afterwards. Upon our arrival Claire went for a lie-down as she was feeling a bit sick. I went for a walk through Hanoi's Old Quarter (my usual haunt nowadays, it seems) and promptly got lost. At one point I stopped at a small cafe and ordered my first iced coffee ... read more

The pictures don't do it justice. You have to see it for yourself. Besides that, though the sky was cloudy, it was neither too hot nor too cold and in many ways the overcast sky made the two days in Halong Bay quite enjoyable. Slept on the boat after swimming (and jumping off the boat) around sunset. Woke up early the next morning for the sunrise, but alas, due to the clouds, we didn't get to see the actual sunrise. We went kayaking too. There is an island called monkey island, because monkeys are supposed to live on it, though we did not see any. There's a giant cave on that island with stalactites and stalagmites that were spectacular, especially considering the hundreds of people who were traipsing through. ... read more

Walking down a path in the majestic region of Sapa, I venture towards a mountain village, which for the moment lays hidden in mist. A woman approaches pushing a wheel barrow, her aged face warm with hope. Getting closer, I see her retarded son lying still and uncomfortable in the wheel barrow. Removing her bandaged fingers from the handle, she extends her hand. I couldn’t help feel a little confronted. I take out my wallet packed with a Vietnamese annual salary and remove a few dollars. Continuing further down, the serenity is picture perfect… almost. The small path is lined with even smaller shops bearing hand-made craft. A shopkeeper, dressed in traditional clothing sits on a plastic chair drinking Coca Cola out of a straw. The beautiful tribal huts are connected by a thick black electrical ... read more

Oh boy, oh boy, oh boy! How I wish you were all here to see this place! Ha Long Bay has trumped all my expectations. We left Hanoi at 08:00 with our tour guide, Thong, and 2 couples (one couple from Oz and the other 2 from Mexico and Sweden). It was a 3 hour trip and 180 km's to Ha Long Bay. I managed to sleep the last half hour and when Claire woke me I lifted my head and my eyes nearly popped out when I caught my first glimpse of the limestone mountains rising out of the cool green waters. I can supply you with a thousand adjectives, but the photo's (which I will publish tomorrow or the day after) are the only way to explain how stunning this place is. We got ... read more

Halong Bay consists of hundreds of rocky island cliffs shooting up from the sea randomly like an obstacle course of floating islands from Avatar. A junk boat is a three or four story cruise ship that looks a lot like a pirate ship. Our junk boat was not junky at all, actually it was fit for kings and queens. The dining hall where they fed us extravagant 7 course meals had glass doors and windows all around. Our room had a/c, a full bath, nice beds and huge windows. On the top deck there were lounge chairs so you could relax like a guilty pirate taking in your fortune to be in such an unreal place. Halong Bay is petitioning to become one of the new 7 wonders of nature so the government is aggressively protecting ... read more

My 6 week journey through South East Asia began in northern Vietnam. There are two big cities in Vietnam, Hanoi in the north (the capital) and Saigon in the South. Vietnam was divided during the French occupation and when the French left the Americans occupied the South. As an American, I call the war the Vietnam War but here it is called the American War. In 1975 Vietnam became united. More to come on that as I get schooled in Vietnamese history. The airport was easy. Getting a visa takes 5 minutes and all the signs are written in English, unlike in the city. Vietnamese used to be written in characters like other Asian languages but the French changed the written language to the latin alphabet with phonetic spelling during the 17th century. Driving through Vietnam ... read more
