Geo: 20.9063, 107.082Heute auf dem Programm: Anreise nach Halong Bay, einchecken auf dem Boot, fahrt zur Sung Sot Grotte, Kanufahrt, ankern, Übernachtung auf dem Boot. Soweit, so gut.

Geo: 20.9063, 107.082We planned a Xmas stopover in Hanoi where DH tried in vain to place a bunch of Skype holiday calls to loved ones back home only to be stymied by power outages, internet server crashes, and Skype traffic. We even had a specially planned concert by Jazz W interrupted by the follies of long distance communication but we're hoping to reschedule once the internet traffic dies down a bit. DH was showing signs of holiday homesickness so it was time for a big league distraction. That distraction came in the form of a boat ride through Halong Bay aboard a Vietnamese junk (ancient Chinese sailing vessel design). Halong Bay was recently named one of the Top 7 Natural Wonders Of The World by the same controversial group that ran the 7 New Man Made Wonders ... read more

Tuesday we headed off on our bus trip to Halong Bay where we took a 4 star cruise on Dragon's Pearl Number 2. Beautiful day – sensational boat, 7 course meal to start the tour! We stopped at a beautiful beach on one of the islands and went kayaking (where Neil kayaked past a girl he knew in Townsville – small world) followed by taking photos of a beautiful sunset (we didn't realise how rare it was at this time of year to have such a great sunny day). Later in the evening we headed up to the cave on the same island where our boat had docked to have our 9 course meal (lunch was amazing)... the cave used to be inhabited by the locals until the tour company decided it was too good to ... read more

13/11/10– After a significant period of unconsciousness, my eyes eventually prised themselves open and the familiar feelings of a morning after anarchy flooded through me. I was dehydrated, my head pounded and every molecule on my abused body seemed to reek of stale smoke. Something else felt wrong though. I couldn’t identify it at first but after finally emerging from my pit I realised I was intensely nauseous. This was extremely uncommon for me but my time to think about it had elapsed and I ran to the bathroom. After an unpleasant few minutes, the sensation eased and, after drinking some water, I realised the adrenaline that was coursing through me had masked the rest of my hangover. I got dressed and joined the others for breakfast but after a few bites I realised I was ... read more

Expectations can often be capricious things. Habitually, they can exist to set a ceiling of expectancy simply too high to realize, such that we are destined for disappointment. Of course, there is that wonderfully unforeseen opposite; where a place or event holds modest promise in our anticipatory minds, yet surpasses any and all preconceived notions to provide us with an experience all the more extraordinary, precisely because of how it came to pass. During our time on the road, we’ve had numerous experiences which could fall into either category (often depending on who you ask!). Well, for Amy and I, Halong Bay fell into neither class! This particular archipelago illicited excited expectations and subsequently followed through on its promise, leaving us simply astounded! Halong Bay is a place which inspires wonderment and awe amongst all who ... read more

Monday morning (November 21st), instead of a frustrating commute to Dublin from Kildare, I woke up on a boat in Halong Bay, one of the most amazing places in the world. The realisation fully set in that we're living the dream! When we started planning this trip Halong Bay was the one place that I was most excited to see. And it didn’t disappoint. We booked a 3 day 2 night trip through our hostel for $109 each. There are so many companies selling trips that you have to just hope for the best that you get a good one. The first night was sleeping on Halong Bay and the second night in a "bungalow" (it was basically a small hut with a mattress) on Catba island. The tour company picked us up at the hotel ... read more

Geo: 20.9063, 107.082One of the most Iconic places in South East Asia are the limestone pillars of Halong Bay, A must see when in the area. To get there we had to pass through the crazy city of Hanoi first. Hanoi is just another big, busy city and we had no interest in staying there for more than we had to. We took a 12 hour bus ride from Sapa to Hanoi during the day which was also another good way to relax after the Mount Fansipan trek. We took a taxi to the old quarter and spent a while trying to find some cheap accommodation, but to find accommodation for less than $15 was a challenge, especially when both hostels were booked out. We ended up getting in to one of the hostels but we ... read more

Vietnam - Ha Long Bay - Mind blowing beauty, enough about me the trip was pretty good too! After a couple of hours trawling the tourist offices in Hanoi we finally settled on a 4* two night boat trip in Ha Long Bay. The choices on offer simply overwhelm you, there are so many tour operators all offering differing packages with prices all over the place and rumours of each others tours being nutritious for bad quality or being a rip off. We spoke to a multitude of people who basically said it seemed to be luck of the draw in relation to the quality of the tour, basically translated it meant good luck with your selection, great, I was not confident with my track record to date! In the end we opted for a tour ... read more

Hey Everyone, These are pics from our 3 day and 2 night cruise in Halong bay. It was beautiful, we met amazing friends for life.. we had great weather too! The only bad part was the service... it was the worse we have ever, EVER had... and traveling for over 10 months to 22 + countries we found that to be surprising! We made the best of it tho and have some really awesome memories! Take care and let us know what you think! love, Randi and Quinn xo... read more

We hadn’t been looking forward to this day much since we landed but it had to come around soon enough. We were on our way to Hue using bus, boat, bus again, taxi then train. As I write this we’re not sure exactly how far that is but I think it is at around 800kms. We woke about six and packed our bags. Breakfast was 0730 and from the wide menu I once again opted for the bacon and eggs. Jo was the smart one and ordered the Pho. At 0830 our bus arrived and we headed back to the wharf to meet our junk. Much of the 45 minute journey was spent on gravel roads being cut out of the mountains. The bus didn’t cope too well with the terrain and we were jolted around ... read more
