Checking out of Golden Wings was not the drama I was expecting. I think the lads on the front desk realised there were not going to be commissions coming their way from us. We walked the now familiar blocks down to Hoan Kiem Lake and across to Kangaroo Cafe, arriving about 0715. Breakfast was a bowl of Pho and a soft drink each D80,000 all up (NZ5) from a tiny roadside cafe. The bus to take us to Halong Bay arrived just after 0800 and eight of us (three Kiwis, an Aussie and four Poms) headed out on the four hour journey. I kept myself intermittently amused between the fine tunes of Megadeth and keeping an eye on how many head on collisions we avoided. The driving outside of the city was no better than in ... read more

Hello everyone! It's friday and I got back from the beautiful Halong Bay yesterday, the best thing so far on my trip, no lie. So at Hanoi Backpackers Hostel, in Hanoi suprisingly, I met up with a few lads I knew from Bangkok and some people they had picked up along the way. That's 13 of us in total. Instead of doing the Hostel's own Halong Bay tour (which by all accounts is x-rated and drunken) we decided to hire our own boat and do the trip ourselves. I'm so glad we did. We booked a tour through Backpackers Tour Operators down the road from the hostel and the boat we got was with AST. Because there were so many of us we managed to barter down the price from $90 to $75 and we had ... read more

As I write this blog we’re in Hue, 1/3 of the way down the East coast of Vietnam. It’s the 1st November and we’re waiting to check into a backpacker’s hostel. There was a Halloween party last night and it seems people are reluctant to get up and check out. It has been a fairly busy 10 days so here goes.......! The 50 minute flight from Laos to Hanoi was fairly painless on the evening of the 20th October, compared with the thought of a 24 hour bus ride over the mountains and a border crossing point that would make the North Pole look busy. ‘Apparently’ the bus drivers have a habit of refusing to cross the border unless you pay them a huge wad of cash, if they haven't robbed you first, then ‘apparently’ the ... read more

Day1 I have been longing to write this blog, guess I have been saving the best for last as it was my last excursion in Vietnam before I go back to the boring city of Hanoi to catch my flight to Bangkok. Wish there was any direct flight straight from Halong as it would be another waste of half a day again in Hanoi Old Quarter, where tourist just flock together for no apparent reason, or may be they are just bound to, unfortunate people like us who wanted to go to Halong or Sapa! However by the look of Halong Bay Wharf area, looks like Hanoi’s dominance would be short lived as lots of big hotels are currently being built alongside the coast, just hope there is also a airport in the future plan. Anyway, ... read more

Halong Bay…..what can I say!! Absolutely beautiful. If you ever get the chance this is a must see destination on your itinerary, the photos do not do it justice and the beauty and serenity are endless. We departed our hotel at about 8.15am for the 3.5 hour journey (it’s only 180kms) and boarded our “junk boat” The Dragon Pearl #3 owned by Indochina Junk. Not a bad boat but a few improvements could happen. But would highly recommend it anyhow. Lunch was served once we had boarded the junk boat and it was certainly plentiful. Plenty of course and very tasty! We set sail and headed for the very secluded islands in Halong Bay, there are thousands of islands to look at and you spend all day just cruising and staring at their beauty. Once we ... read more

I am currently in Hanoi, Vietnam. Hanoi is in the northern part of the country. I think Hanoi is what I thought of when I would try to envision what a Vietnamese city is like. The old quarter, where I was and currently am staying is a complete maze of small streets and alleys – all filled to the brim with motorbikes, tiny eateries, ladies carrying baskets of fruit on head and shoulders, of course bars, restaurants, guest houses – and silk galore –and pretty much anything else you might desire. A shisha club down the street seems to have been my go to spot the past few days to sit on the sidewalk, drink a beer, and watch the crazy world go by. Pat and I sadly said goodbye on Sept. 27 – we ... read more

Sorry for our delay in writing our next post, we haven't had any reliable internet access in the last week because of our remote locations, but please read on, we have so much to share. We can't say enough about beautiful Cat Ba Island and Ha Long Bay, we enjoyed a full week of sunning ourselves on beaches and eating fresh seafood. We met a fantastic British couple the night of our bonfire on the beach and we had several dinners and drinks with them a few days after. When they asked us how long our holiday was we felt proud to say "3 months" but soon choked on our words when they said they would be traveling for an entire year, taking in SE Asia, Australia, New Zealand, and South America and lots of other ... read more

This is a sad moment (22:15 GMT+7, Thursday 15th September 2011). That is because this may be the last blog post that I (Elana) ever write. But, never fear, because it may not. I may decide to write one about our LONG journey home to the good old U of K (that doesn't really work, but never mind. You catch my drift...). And then I may even decide to start my own blog about... stuff. My life. Things. Life, the Universe, and Everything. That sort of thing. But, then again, I may not. ............................. Emotional (well, not that emotional; I was once told by a computer that I am emotionally cold, so that is the best stab at sentimentality I could muster) possible farewells to the world of blogging aside, I have a blog to write ... read more

Uong Bi!

We arrived in Hanoi from Hoi An headed to Hanoi Backpackers Hostel. This place was recommended to me by several people so we decided to stay there. They were located in downtown Hanoi, old quarter I think. There were motor bikes all around and endless alleys to explore. After we checked into the hostel and booked a Halong Bay party tour, we wandered the streets. Unfortunately my tummy got the best of me and we ended up in a pizza restaurant eating average pizza. Later that night we ended up finding the local food area with people eating mystery kabobs..maybe next time. A few more random alley ways later we came across a spa that had cheap body massages. We went in and decided to go for it. We both got a lavender full body massage. ... read more
