Saturday 8th February 2020 When we stepped off the speedboat yesterday, at Manoh Pier, on the little island of Koh Yao Noi, it was like stepping back in time. It reminded us of arriving on the island of Koh Chang twenty years ago. As a truck bumped along a dusty little road with us, three other backpackers and our luggage, it was just like being on the truck that delivered us, with our son Dan and Lorna, to our accommodation at “Maggie´s Place” on Koh Chang, on Christmas Eve 1999. That was our first visit to Thailand. The love affair with this beautiful country, its people and cuisine had begun! In 1999, our son Nick was working in Bangkok and we came to Thailand to share Christmas with him (and celebrate the Millennium). Dan and Lorna ... read more

We had a wonderful buffet breakfast in the dining room at the Nana beach hotel. This hotel was far busier than any others we have stayed however the food was great a good selection of American and local Thai food. I tried a banana leaf wrapped sticky rice with egg custard, it was delicious! We set off on the bikes around 8:15, stopping at the small town of Thungwualaen beach “literally the bull that ran away” to admire the bull statue and beach. We headed on along the coast again turning inland to stop at a rubber plantation and see how the latex is extracted and saved in cans strapped to the trees. Very rural and rich in beaches and rivers we encountered, cocunut plantations, shrimp farming fishing villages, cows and buffalo. The cows are often accompanied ... read more

It was a cooler morning and we had a lovely breakfast in the barn porpla resort Prachuap Khiri Khan. The cycle team arrived promptly at 8am and we set off through the town and over to the Air Force base. Pi Golf explained about the Japanese invasion where many Thai policeman were killed during the Second World War so Japan could access Burma across this thin peninsula. We cycled On to visit the Waghor aquarium and further through beautiful jungle with verdant palm trees with occasional glimpses of the shore line. We wound on through an area mainly populated by Scandinavians within the Wat Hanakon national park and had a rest stop at a local police station, where we ate snacks and chatted with a policeman. We continued through similar landscape winding through small roads often ... read more

Our time in Thailand is quickly coming to an end. We spent the last few days on Ko Lanta trying to cram everything in. We did a last long walk to Bamboo beach. Pia and Antti, our friends from Finland, came along too. It turned out to be a lovely, if not sweaty, day out and we were happy to have shared the experience with them. ( not the sweaty bit!!) After a long, much needed, siesta, we met up again that evening at Aleena mini mart for a beer and then went along to Irie Bar to see the live band there. Its the nearest thing to a night club here. Open air, lots of cushions on wooden platforms , a stage and a small dance floor. Lots of coloured lights and, of course, stars ... read more

The sun rose behind the hills at the southern tip of the bay as we enjoyed our breakfast at the privacy beach resort near Khao Sam roi Yot national park. Our guide Pi Golf arrived just before 8am and we were on our bikes and cycling south along the coast by 8:15. The sea was calm and a light breeze cooled us as we headed into the park. We were greeted by buffaloes then monkeys and steep limestone cliffs predominant throughout the park there were lakes, palm trees and wonderful views. Stopping off at a beautiful temple by the sea we were schooled in the role of the Naga protecting the Buddha and how this snake connects the land with the heavens. We had cycled 65km before we stopped for lunch at a roadside restaurant where ... read more

I'd only got a 30 day 'Visa on Arrival' when I entered Chiang Mai. Partly because I wasn't sure if I'd go off somewhere else for a few days or so anyway. But having settled into life in Chiangmai I didn't feel I wanted to arrange anything else. The alternative is to go to the Immigration office near the airport and apply for a 30 day extension. I expected it to take a good two hours, and all the advice on the internet was that it would be less crowded after 1pm. So I started my day by walking to the acupuncture clinic for my dose of needles in the back. Hardly feel them going in - it's just a pin prick. And then there's the gentle throbbing, almost like a pulse, when the electrical current ... read more

“The Andaman is Thailand’s dream coast………Flashy resorts are pushing out the bamboo shacks and Thai-Rasta bars and authenticity hides largely in the backwaters now. But if you’re willing to search hard, your postcard dream is still there” Islands and Beaches - Lonely Thailand’s Planet Wednesday 5th February 2020 Yesterday, we returned to such a dream place, Pan Beach on Noppharat Thara Bay, Ao Nang. We rarely re-visit (it is a big world out there) but since we were so close, we just had to find out if this little Paradise remained unspoilt. It has! We booked in for three nights and leave tomorrow. Thailand has confirmed six new cases of Coronavirus, four of whom are Thais. It is not spreading too fast it seems, at the moment, outside of China and we have been impressed with ... read more

60 Km day so an early breakfast at the excellent Golden beach hotel Cha Am. a lovely beach, many bars and a great atmosphere. Our guide picked us up at 8am and we drove 30 Km to Hau Hin the starting point a beautiful temple as always! We followed cycle paths inland towards and along a lovely beach seeing statues of the kings of Thailand throughout the ages along the way. Stopping for a break to see a pineapple farm and sample the produce, delicious succulent fresh pineapple and some cocunut dumplings. There were rivers with fishing villages and shrimp boats and 3 temples, Hindu Buddhist and Chinese. We ate local bananas. Then headed for the cave at phraya Nakhon it involved a sea boat trip and 1km each way hike over steep and slippery terrain. ... read more

The day started well, Grandma’s Kitchen was open at 7.30am as promised and my pick up came exactly at 09.30, despite my last minute jitters that they’d forget me. At the ferry we Ko Mook people got on first and they put our bags downstairs, as we were the last to get off. It was much nicer sitting upstairs on the deck although there was no seating. The first stop was Ko Ngai, which looked VERY nice from the boat and I wished I was getting off there. Then we went past Ko Mook and stopped at Ko Kradan, which looked better for a day trip than an overnight. You had to get off the front of the boat onto the sand, and for people with suitcases along came a guy with a trolley and wheeled ... read more

So having stayed here for 2 nights so that I could visit the sea gypsy village to the south of the town, it didn’t work out like that, the reason being that instead of being just after the pier as I had imagined it was an hours’ walk, so that was the end of that! I was awake at 3.30 am thanks to the cockerels. When I counted them later there are at least 14 living opposite amongst the abandoned car parts, bikes and other rubbish. That’s about 14 too many, IMHO. When I left this morning the family were working on their fish catch, descaling and gutting. The scales on the white snapper were huge, the size of 10p pieces, and they were pushing them down a hole in the concrete, presumably (hopefully) for the ... read more
