Bright and early Sunday morning (had to check the calendar, my days are all turned around), we headed up to AYA to get a motorbike. The place was packed! There was a queue for getting one, and I was number 12. We headed off to the Witching Well for breakfast (ahhh-mazing), where I happened to listen in on two girls sitting next to us. The one was telling about her infected toe, and how there was this huge bubbling blister that the doctor cut off. That was the best breakfast conversation I have ever heard in my life.
Went back to AYA to see where we were at in the queue, and of course they were up to number 19. I showed my number with my most pitiful expressed, and they let us have one immediately. Our bike is a Honda Scoopy. It is the best bike, perfect for Zach. It is lime green and pink with little skulls with pink bows. It also says Vital Girl on it. Zach kept looking around at all the other cool bikes with an expression of longing. He was trying to trade with someone else, but we were stuck with it.
The
motorbikes here are fairly cheap. We are renting ours for 140 baht a day plus 40 baht a day insurance (I really wanted insurance on it). That is less than $6/day. Helmets are 100 baht/person and are a must. We got on our little bike and rode back to the guesthouse. This is when Zach insisted I learn how to ride a motorbike. I am scared of them. I don't like riding them, and I definitely don't want to drive them. Our guesthouse is in a nice paved back alley with no traffic. So I hopped on and managed to get to the end of the road. Turning around sucks and I haven't gotten the hang of using the gas on the handle bar while turning it around with my feet. Then, I got stuck in a pothole. Mind you, the end of the paved alley leads into one of the busiest roads in Pai, so everyone can see what I'm doing as I turn around. I am sitting on the motorbike, trying to back out of the hole when I hit the gas on the handle bar. I and the motorbike going flying into a bush. I literally looked
like Superman for a second as I go careening to my death. Do I get away with this with no audience? Of course not! Zach is down the road laughing his ass off and two lovely Thai girls leap off their motorbike to come help me. We manage to pull it out of the bush. I thank them and get back on the bike. I ride back up to the guesthouse, tell him to go to hell, and then do the exact same thing I did down by the bush. I accidentally crank the gas and I go flying again... In front of another person standing outside and smoking. I'm covered in leaves of course, and I tell Zach I will never drive a motorbike again.
Before supper, we headed off for a massage at PTTT (Pai Therapy Training something or another). One of the best ones I had by far. Wish I got 2 hours instead. Na's Kitchen was for supper. What a great experience. Na is the cook, and you can see her in the open air kitchen. She is always smiling and such a good cook. I got the fried fish with Thai salad
and a coconut cream shake (OMG!). Zach got the mixed fruit shake with no papaya and pad thai.
We went back and turned in early. Very uneventful day, but we had great plans on the motorbike coming up!
