The ride to Pai is a fun one; I say this most sarcastically. 746 turns in 3 hours. You drive through the mountains where there are stunning views. You most likely will fear for your life. I surprisingly did not get car sick, but a few of the people on the minibus (Zach included) were incredibly nauseous. We stopped about half way for a breather where many-a-white person lay prone on tables, moaning and groaning.
Driving through the mountains though make you literally gasp with awe. It feels like you are on top of the world. We finally got Pai, and I really wasn’t sure what to expect. There is a heavy hippy vibe here, and many of the Thais are eager to smile at you and wave. Also, many of them think they are Rastafarian and have dreads and colorful Jamaican hats on their heads. Tong from our guesthouse picked us and another American couple up from the minibus station in his side-car taxi/tuk tuk. Very polite and softspoken Thai man. He delivered us to Happy House Guesthouse, which is in a back alley, away from most of the action. Fritz, the Australian/Holland man who runs it,
greeted us. He is quite funny and very helpful. We got a map and a warning to get a motorbike as quickly as possible, as they ALWAYS run out. The room itself is nothing amazing. Bathroom is really huge, but we are right next to the lounge so it is very loud. The temperature is always cool so no need for even a fan.
We decided to postpone the motorbike rental until the following morning. Zach settled in for the evening, as he was tired and still hungover. I ventured out to explore the town a little bit. Every night there is a market, but I just did a little loop around where our guesthouse was. Very cute town, and very busy. For our early supper we chose Charlie and Lek’s. Absolutely fantastic. I had the lime/mint fruit shake and the fried pork. Zach had the panang curry and mixed fruit shake (hold the papaya). We shared spring rolls. My shake tasted like a mojito without the alcohol. Oh how I love thee!!
We did a quick walk around and found a vendor selling marvelous little critters: meal worms, crickets, cockroaches. Tasha had a
brilliant idea to have a little snack, so you will find my video accompanying this blog of me eating a delicious cricket. Delicious actually may be pushing it; it was more crunchy and fishy.
We walked back to the room and promptly fell asleep. I woke up to the “sun” shining in my face. I asked Zach what time it was: 1 a.m. and the sun was actually one of the lights in our room that he turned on… I’m sure purposefully so I would wake up and keep him company. I will save the next day’s adventure in Pai for later. Zach is just finishing up his shower, and I need a pedicure and a drink stat!
