Day 346: Wednesday 10th June - Starting mahout training I have to be at Chiang Mai’s bus station for 7am to get a bus to the Elephant Conservation Centre, an hour’s drive south on the highway between Lampang and Chiang Mai. The next bus isn’t until 7:20am, which will be cutting it fine to arrive at the centre for 8:30am. I explain to them where I want to be dropped off by imitating an elephant, and making a right fool of myself. What’s worse I think the Thai lady spoke English!!! The bus drops me at the front gate an hour later and then I get shuttled the final 2km, arriving at registration just in time. I am handed a blue mahout suit to change into which is a fetching blue navy blue linen affair. I ... read more

Lampang Having recharged the batteries in Chiang Mai, we headed for the city of Lampang a few hours south of Chiang Mai. As usual, the bus station was complete chaos, little english is spoken, and notice boards and both (un)helpful passers-by are full of contradictory information! We eventually got tickets and arrived a few hours later in this small, quaint town. Both our reconnaisance and information in the Lonely Planet was poor and in this instance we were booked in at a hotel called the Top Hotel which they equated to a smaller Hyatt. Needless to say, it wasn´t, but we settled in and decided to explore. Our two main reasons for coming to Lampang were to visit the largest and most reknowned elephant conservation centre and to see a paricular teak temple thought to be ... read more

I woke up at 5am on Thursday, to catch the right bus to the Elephant Conservatory. Adam, the hotel owner at Tri Gong Residence, drove me himself to the bus station at 5:45am and made sure I bought the right ticket. After waiting to 7:10, the bus finally left for Lampang. The conservatory is on the way from Chiang Mai to Lampang and after a couple dozens of Thai pop karaoke videos and an unscheduled stop for reportedly a bad tire later, I was dropped off on the side of the highway next to the Conservatory. Somehow I did manage to arrive at the check in center on time for the start of the course, 8:30am. We changed into our denim mahout suits and walked to the elephant show grounds, where our elephants and mahouts were ... read more

Day Nine...The Munch Bunch!!! If I eat anymore pineapple, I am worried that I am going to turn into a member of the Munch Bunch...not quite sure which one but I am sure Jojo or Miss Kat will inform me of this vital piece of information. Thai food is actually beginning to agree with me, which is a big surprise especially having never eaten the stuff in my life before. Also at this point, I have to mention to The Macsquirrel back in the UK that they lay every table out here left-handed...the amount of grief she gives me back in the UK as a result is untrue! Todays leg of the journey took us from Sukhothai northwards to Lampang whose city is proudly represented by the chicken! We visited several historic sights including those at ... read more

Our Global Vets summer is almost to a close! For the past 3 weeks, we've been busy tackling elephant feedings, large animal surgeries and everything in between! First, we spent a week at the Kamphaengsaeng campus of Kasetsart University where we were lucky enough to shadow some large animal vets for a week. During that time we got to witness a surgery on a cow with an extreme abdominal hernia, piglets with an E. Coli infection, an orthopedic equine surgery, and two bovine dystochia cases - one ending in a caesarian and one with a fetotomy! First experiences for all of us! We also travelled around with a vet to local farms and saw numerous interesting cases: a cow with Bovine Leukemia Virus, an artificial insemination procedure of a cow and a cow with a babesiosis ... read more

Hi all, How is everyone? Hope you're all doing okay. So after 2 pick-up trucks, 1 taxi, 2 buses and 20 hours later we arrived in Lampang, Northern Thailand. Lampang was a a lot less touristic than all the other places we have visited so far and we were often the only farangs (foreigners) in sight. The town was probably more representative of Thai life but we found that there was little to do here. On Wednesday 19th March we got a taxi to the Thai Elephant Conservation Centre. We had enrolled on a 3 day / 2 night mahout (elephant trainer) course to learn about the elephants and how to ride/command them. I was assigned a 10 year old asian female elephant called Wanalee (which I think was the cutest but I'm biased) and Stu ... read more

Wedding It has been a short night. When we arrived in Lampang I was given a sheet and asked to spread it on the wooden floor of the house and sleep. Lying there I tried to remember when I had last slept on the floor and I had come to the conclusion that this is most likely a first. It took me ages to fall asleep. Not because of the lack of comfort I'm used to but because of K and his friends laughing outside and all the impressions I've gained since travelling seemed to occupy my mind endlessly. Furthermore it was really hot and all the mosquitoes in town seemed to have spread the news of the arrival of a foreigner. I was bitten again and again and I had no means to defend myself. ... read more

I spent the weekend in the sleepy City of Lampang. Almost untouched by tourism, a much more laid back atmosphere. As I had left my computor back in my room in Chaing Mai I was unable to update my blog, but better late than never.... read more

Hello Everyone! We have made our way up to Lampang by now - Northern Thailand - and luckily this is associated with some cooler weather (only approx 30degrees!). But this trip didnt go without humps and bumps. When we decided to leave Ayuthaya we found a great train - perfect departure time, good price, not too long! Sweet! Just to find out that first our all it was fully booked and second of all it had a 2h delay. We therefore decided for the 3rd class ordinary train = 6h for approx 250km or so... I think the local motorbikes would have made it there before us. But anyway - dont think there were any other tourists on that incredably hot train so we def got the 'local' experience! We treated ourselves to a room with ... read more

Monday. December 31. Day 7. Phitsanulok to Sukothai to Lampang. Gathering merit. Before we leave town we visit one more temple. At Wat Yai, Anya, who at 16 is the youngest group-member, and I, representing the whole group, make an offering to a monk. On our knees, we place a bucket containing a monk's robe and an assortment of food on a platform in front of the monk. Because we are women we aren't allowed to make the offering directly to him. After he accepts several donations, he blesses us with holy water tossed on to the people in front of him using flexible sticks (made from coconut trees) that he dips in water. Afterward I move to the area in front of the Buddha and sit quietly for awhile. I am almost sure I feel ... read more
