Global Vets 2008

"Student Vets Sharing a Global Vision "

Global Vets is an official program of the International Veterinary Medicine Club at the Ontario Veterinary College in Guelph, Ontario, Canada. Since 1998 this program has been offering student veterinarians a unique opportunity to investigate animal health care in developing countries.
Global Vets was formed to promote international collaboration on animal health and welfare, agricultural development and ecosystem health. The program strives to enhance working relationships and the exchange of ideas between Canadian veterinarians and their colleagues in developing regions of the world.

For more information about the Global Vets program, this year's generous sponsors and how you can support our veterinary activities, please visit our official website at http://www.ovc.uoguelph.ca/Associations/globalvets/2008/index.html

This year, Global Vets is sending 4 teams to developing nations in Central America, East Africa, South Africa and Southeast Asia.

Team Central America (Vlad Stefanescu, Adriana Pastor & Megan Noyes) will be involved in an array of projects focused on: educational programs aimed at sustainable agricultural practices, local spay-neuter programs, wildlife rehabilitation and conservation initiatives, and public health.

Team East Africa (Lindsay Davis & Kristy DesRoche) will do work with small animal spay/neuter clinics, a sustainable swine project, assist the Massai Steppe tribes people with cattle care, and volunteer with local wildlife veterinarians in the national parks throughout the region.

Team South Africa (Sherry Ekstrom, Taryn Ellis, Sean Colyer & Ann Nguyen) will work with domestic small animal welfare clinics in impoverished areas, food production animals in rural areas and aid in a variety of projects involving wildlife in national parks, private reserves, zoos and rehabilitation centres.

Team Southeast Asia (Zee Leung, Tiffany Marchildon & Melanie Youngs) will examine the husbandry of working elephants in Thailand, how avian influenza is being dealt with on the front-lines in Indonesia & the welfare status of local stray dogs and cats in Thailand.

Our Global Vets summer is almost to a close! For the past 3 weeks, we've been busy tackling elephant feedings, large animal surgeries and everything in between! First, we spent a week at the Kamphaengsaeng campus of Kasetsart University where we were lucky enough to shadow some large animal vets for a week. During that time we got to witness a surgery on a cow with an extreme abdominal hernia, piglets with an E. Coli infection, an orthopedic equine surgery, and two bovine dystochia cases - one ending in a caesarian and one with a fetotomy! First experiences for all of [View Full Entry]

We arrived on June 8 at the agricultural school of El Hogar, just outside of Talanga, Honduras. The school serves as a boarding school for approximately 50 boys ranging in age from 12-20. All the students at the school, are accepted on the basis of financial need, and most of the students come from rural farming families. At the school the students have 2 tracks, one is the plant/agriculture track, and the other is the livestock track. Students participate in 5 hours of hands on farm management every morning, and then have 5 hours of regular high school classes in the [View Full Entry]

Since leaving the atlantic coast Team Central America has spent 10 days in the capital city of San Jose. We stayed at this quiet, amazing little hostel where the staff are super, and the location was really nice and central. For the first couple of days we explored the cities many sighs including it´s many parks, National Symphony, museums etc... Although central San Jose is becoming more of a big city every day, the downtown area is only a very small part of the entire city itself. While in San Jose, we participated in several spay and neuter clinics in many [View Full Entry]

We're currently in the CIVAS (Centre for Indonesian Veterinary Analytical Studies - www.civas.net) office stationed in Bogor, Indonesia and we're having an incredible time. So far our first week has focussed on learning about the AI situation in Indonesia and all of its complexities. We have visited large scale and smaller scale poultry farms, poultry collecting facilities (which act as middlemen between poultry farmers and local markets/buyers), Halal slaughter facilities, and smaller community-based poultry farming operations. We're also in contact with researchers from Colorado State Univer [View Full Entry]

Our Central American adventure began last week when we arrived in the Cahuita national park, in north-east province of Limon. The national park is the site of one of WIDECAST's many sea turtle conservation projects in the Caribbean. The park is breathtaking, and we see new species of wildlife every day, including toucans, howler monkeys, whitefaced cappuchin monkeys, leatherback seaturtles, lizards, black vultures, pit vipers and most importantly nightly visits from the resident raccoon, if you can believe it. Our work here consists of 14km nightly patrols of the beach, for seaturtles coming [View Full Entry]
