We are now in Lopburi. We are staying in the old part of the city (a few miles from the new city). There are a lot of ruins here (temples and a palace). There are also a lot of monkeys, around the ruins and also in the town. I have a lot of pictures that I will add later. - Matt... read more

Went to Lopburi today, this is home of the monkeys. They rome the streets freely as humans and sit in lamp posts drinking bottles of beer. It's so funny but a little scary as those buggers are nasty. They can really get violent and I wern't hanging around to find out how a monkey bite feels. Great day though. Everyone is starting to come out of there shell a little so the group is really getting on. We went to a Festival like show for the princesses birthday. It was a little boring but due to the cultural side of it we stayed and watched it and actually got a little involved towards the end!... read more

So, we left Chai Mai, and headed to Sukothai (it means "The Dawn of Happiness"... thanks mom). We were planning to see Ayuttaya, but Sukothai was older - the first thai kingdom - and it just sounded much more amazing. Sukothai was awesome! The city itself was a little drabbb... but we stayed in an awesome cottage-esque hotel with nice gardens, a fab cafe, nice rooms, and hammocks! It was gorgeous! (but still no toilet paper!). Wednesday morning, we headed to the Old City/ Historical Park... it was quite spectacular... so very many old temples, buddhas, and chedis were scattered throughout this beautiful enclosed park. It was a sunny day, and we rented some cool bikes, which were defenitely an asset, as the grounds of the park were pretty huge. It was such a nice day... ... read more

Lapburi was unexpectedly empty. I only found a few things to fill my mind and heart. Firstly there was this real cool rasta looking kinda bohemain guy with a big smile riding a bicycle tuk-tuk. He took me slowly but safely to my shabby hotel. Handing him a 50 bhat note he didn’t even have a 10 bhat coin change to hand me since i bargained the trip down to 40, anyway i got him to pose with me on a photo, good enough…:) The main reason for going there must otherwise be alll the crazy monkeys. What once was one big bunch of them has now separated into two competing gangs. One roaming the streets, one the old teplme ruin sites. I who had never seen chimanpanse or whatever they’re called monkeys before was very ... read more

So far our travels have been amazing, we have eaten a lot of great food, met some interesting peple, and seen some increadable sites. But our traveling has not been without rocks in the road. We left on this journey with the hope to learn more about the culture in which we are traveling in. Well we have learned a lot but at the same time it is difficult to understand Thai culture, or any culture for that matter, without knowing the language. As it is, we can only observe, and guess why things happen the way they do rather than receive feedback from the locals. Even if we could speak the language we would still be ignorant of some aspects of Thai life because we are not Thai. Since we wish to travel the world ... read more

Motivated by the desire to squeeze in the final Bangkok sights, I have woken up early....Over breakfast get talkin to Brendan an Irish guy from Sligo that is doing a round the world trip... He confesses that despite spending much time in Bangkok on a previous visit he has not seen the main temples...'tis a familiar story apparently..some prefer the beer other prefer the sights ...kinda like those Irish guys that used to go to Greece or Spain for two weeks and then come back White 'cos they spent all the time in bars and amusments.... We depart on the express boat to see Wat Po, the largest temple in Bangkok famous for its huge reclining buddha...in Nirvana position... I squeeze in Wat Phra Kaew in the afternoon before taking my train North to Lop Buri ... read more
