We arrived early in the morning having taken the night train from Chiang Mai. The train was so so, we had seating so it was a little better than taking the bus! We arrived at the station at 7.00am and were greeted by a huge gold statue of a monkey with the hugest balls, sorry, there is no easy way of writing it! So we jump off only to be greeted by tuck tuck drivers. We knew where we wanted to stay, a hotel that is said to be the playground for the monkeys as they run and swing on the window bars. No idea where it was, we decide to take a bicycle cart sort of thing each, costing 30 baht each. As we sit in and get ready to suck in the scenery, the ... read more

I'm going to start this blog by putting a theory out there, do you think that I'm jinxed? I mean right now, I think that news across the globe is dominated with two things, the first being the terrorism in Mumbai and the second being the mess in Bangkok. I'm thinking that when I decide to move on I need to send advance warning to my new country of choice so they can bolster their secruity before I arrive! Anyway, thought I'd do a blog, to say that all is well in Lopburi, no signs at all of any of the trouble in Bangkok here, and, it would take A LOT to wake up my sleepy little town, believe me! I wouldn't normally be concerned about the going ons down there, but, it's 19 days and ... read more

Having got up fairly early and taken a tuk tuk to the train station, we got on a train to go to our next destination - Lopburi, a town an hour's journey North of Ayutthaya. Once on the train we met a couple of very friendly Thai people who (as seems to happen a fair bit) were interested in what we were doing, where we were from and keen to just talk to us about anything at all (despite their English not being fantastic). Due to a lack of the Internet in the previous hostel (and a lack of options to stay in Lopburi) we hadn't booked any accomodation. When we got off the train obviously looked fairly lost and one of the guys we'd been speaking to (a Thai Christian) noticed this and, having had ... read more

Mmmmm still debate over this one, but before we left the UK i felt a strong affinity towards NZ and was completely rewarded as all my high expectations were surpassed with stunning landscapes, warm people, love for the outdoors, etc, etc. A lot of what there is to love, we both felt and shared. Top five reasons to love NZ and the Kiwi's (and live there?): 1. "Sweet As". Their glass is half full and if it isn't, it's full to the brim/overflowing. Warm, friendly and chilled. What a lovely bunch of people! 2. "Fair Go". National philosophy enjoyed by all that everyone can and should have a crack/craic 3. Scenary... though sorry the North Island, but GO SOUTH! 4. Space 5. Climate (getting four seasons in one day in NZ was a lot more interesting ... read more

Got to get this up before i forget. Arrived in Bangkok, a hectic city to say the least and one where a bit of sanctuary might be appreciatively sought and found now and then in a quiet beer... a beer to sit back and judge the pace of everything racing past before you jump back in. Well, for our first six days Thailand was entirely dry for the Princess Royal's state funeral. So we added a bit of 'top five' discussion to help an evening of fruit juices pass and the one that still had me chuckling two days later was top five fruit detectives 1. MacGUAVA 2. STARFRUIT and Hutch (with Huggy PEAR of course) 3. PetroCHERRY 4. MANGO PI 5. BERRY Mason There was debate about whether MacGyver was a true detective, what June ... read more

Moving on from the Village to some Monkey Business in Lovely Lopburi Friday 26th September There was little sleep to be had last night as there was a huge dog fight at 2.30 am which the father of the house had to go outside to sort out and at 5.00 am the stereo started booming out from the shop across the street. There are vendors that sell their wares from trucks passing through the village and they usually have a loud P.A system and one of them was setup around the corner with his music and announcements going full blast at 6.00 am. I went for my morning walk a bit earlier than usual in a different direction today and it felt good to do some exercise after all the eating at the BBQ restaurant last ... read more

I cannot believe that I've been in Thailand for over four months now. Each week seems to fly by at lightening pace. Next week is my fifteenth teaching week, and the Fun Language course is 30 weeks long, so by Friday, I'll be half way through my first year, scary!! The good thing about being half way through the year, is that the end of the first term is also in sight, and with that, comes a HOLIDAY!!! YAY! I am absolutely loving being in the classroom, more than I ever dared dream I would, but, it is really exhausting work, and so, a week off towards the end of October is going to be very welcome. I have no clear plans yet, but I can promise you, it will involve lounging on a beach doing ... read more

On Thursday we took the overnight train back down towards Bangkok. We got off the train first thing on Friday morning, about 4 hours north of Bangkok in a small town called Lopburi. The primary reason for stopping here was to see the monkeys - The town of Lopburi is over run with the things. I must admit, I wasn’t expecting to see them everywhere, but you couldn’t get away from them. They were sitting on road signs, running along phone lines, swinging from the building roof tops. We even saw a couple at a pedestrian crossing waiting to cross the road. Julie made the mistake of going in to a shop and buying a bottle of juice. The minute she came out there were monkeys running towards her at quite a pace. We stopped in ... read more
