Matt and I ran some errands in Weligama yesterday. We needed to buy and mail a birthday card, pick up some electrician's tape, and find a couple of gifts and wrapping paper. Easy, right? Well, surprisingly, it was. On our way out of the last shop, bags in hand, gifts pre-wrapped per our request, we laughed as we recalled a similar outing, undertaken our first week in Sri Lanka. The list that day was short: tape, thread and needle, and postcards. We asked many people for help but the directions were difficult for us to understand and if we were able to find the right place, it was closed or didn't have what we needed. After 2 hours of wandering around we left completely defeated. I guess we have adapted. Yesterday, with our list completed after ... read more

This morning we were woken by the beautiful sound of monks chanting. It is the day of the full moon and a Buddhist holiday here. We are lucky enough to be staying right next to a temple although guessing from the amount of temples we have seen, I don't think that is very unusual. The chanting has continued throughout the day and we've been told it will continue all night too. Tomorrow we embark on our first railroad trip. It's an iconic image and one that we've witnessed a few times since we've been here - a train car rushing past with several people hanging out of the open doors. Our host's son assures us that it's loads of fun to ride that way but I think we'll be a little more circumspect. We've planned a ... read more

Here we go! It took us a long time to get here but the adventure has finally begun. We were originally drawn to Sri Lanka by the quintessential symbols of kindly intelligence - elephants. The country hosts the largest herds of wild Asian Elephants found anywhere in the world. But it turns out they are also the perfect ambassadors for the Sri Lankan people. We have been overwhelmed by the generosity and all around friendliness we have been met with in the South. Many of the people we have spoken with have told us that we are the first Canadian and American they have met, as the majority of travelers to this part of the country are either Russian, German or other Europeans. We haven't encountered anyone from the Americas since we've arrived. We'll see what ... read more

A couple of days of lazing on Mirissa beach and it's the first time I've experienced proper heat since I've been here. It's very nice but it could be anywhere. I should have just chilled for my time here and read my book, but instead I made the huge mistake of going on a whale spotting tour you see advertised all over. Six hours on a little boat chasing after a whale, left and right, round and round, up and down - I was so sick! Eventually they gave me a mattress to lie down on and I slept through most of it. They did wake me up when the blue whale was spotted and I managed to force myself to the side of the boat to see its nose and a great spurt of water ... read more

On arrival in Marissa we were hit by the coastal heat, 30 degree plus and no breeze. Our guest house, Palm Villa, was straight onto the beachh and sea. We were shown to our rooms and straight away Evie and abs had their swimming costumes on ready for the sea. Where we were based was made up of a coastline about a mile long with guest houses, hotels and bars along a palm tree strip. The sea was a major attraction for Evie and abs who enjoyed swimming and crashing into the sometimes big waves, they also got themselves some goggles which they used to swim in the rock pools looking at the fish. One of the highlights was seeing turtles feeding about 10 metres from shore, we were able to watch theses for about 30 minutes ... read more

January 18... It must be an auspicious week in the Sri Lankan calendar for weddings. Not only did we happen across the one in Belihul Oya early this week (W1 photos), there were two more in Weligama and Galle Wednesday that a few of us were lucky enough to get some photographs of. Wednesday morning, after watching quite a lovely sunrise (fyi, between 6 and 6:30 am) from the beach at the hotel, along came another wedding party (W2 photos) to get their photos done. The early morning wedding party was interesting for two reasons - (a) the wedding party was attired in traditional finery from the Kandy area and (b) the two flower girls never did show up for the photo shoot. I spoke to the bride just as they were leaving our hotel - ... read more

You want to have a beach vacation. It must coincide with the New Year s Eve. It must also be cheap. Heaped with such constraints, I set out to plan a trip for us – Maya and me. Usually, when I have such difficult constraints to satisfy, I usually bank on a customized trip organizer to tide me through the mess. So far I have found www.nivalink.com to be the most reliable when you are planning something on a tight budget, yet keen on not missing out on any of the fun. Initial discussion brought up several popular names, like Thailand, Malaysia, Goa, Maldives. But end of December is the worst time to plan a trip to any of these places because of their popularity. Then it struck us why not Srilanka. Till 2009, Srilanka was ... read more
