We continue to settle into Kurunegala. By the time we leave we will be virtually part of the establishment, and sorry to leave for many reasons (although thrilled to finally quit the house which will definitely pass into family legend!) We have a favourite posh restaurant, Saruketha, and 2 reasonably priced nice bakery/cafés (In and Out and Pereras) one of which we frequent for evening meals and another where the grown ups meet for lunch when the boys are at school, or which we visit for lunches and 11ses together. This week was notable on various fronts. We were given bicycles (second hand) arranged by the ever so grateful hospital committee. This made major changes to the school trip. We have grown to loathe the Colombo Road at school time, a migraineogenic chaotic triple column of ... read more

The donations and messages of support continue to flood in from our friends and relatives and are extremely gratefully received here. We are treated almost like royalty thanks to your generosity! The people at the hospital here can’t believe that foreigners are doing so much to help when so many local people aren’t doing anything. We have tried to explain that it is the same everywhere but they remain astounded by the compassion of strangers. We are in daily communication with the hospital regarding their immediate priorities and what we can do to assist. Yesterday we delivered 72 pairs of aluminium crutches and today we are waiting for the arrival of 35 pairs of wooden ones. Crutches are in short supply here and we have been scouring the country for the pairs that we need. The ... read more

It rained heavily all day Tuesday, and there were tropical thunderstorms and power cuts through the night. We awoke Wednesday to discover that some things are the same here as at home. It is a (newly declared) public holiday and as sure as day follows night it is raining still. Jake made me laugh - “It really is a holiday today, even the Sun has taken the day off!” Most of town is shut and only Inter-city buses are running. I hope I can find an open internet source both to post this, and especially as we are desperate for contact home to sort the efforts of so many of you to assist in our attempts to support the hospital. The weather is an annoyance for us, but verging on a disaster for the already bursting ... read more

An update on the situation in the Kurunegala hospital. A sincere thank you to those of you who have sent money already and to those of you who are in the process of collecting. It is a relief to us to be able to do something practical to help relieve a little of the suffering. I took a couple of photos at the hospital this morning but it felt intrusive to dwell on the individual suffering. The ward was full beyond capacity after the first few arrivals and patients now cover every available piece of ground, the lucky ones with mats and shade. Today I delivered a large box of medicines and tomorrow I will be going back with a water mattress and bags of baby clothing, feeding bottles, reading books and drawing materials for the ... read more

May 16th and 17th If we were asked Nicky and I would say that undoubtedly the highlight of the trip has been the boys and how proud we have been of their adaptability, development and all round lovely wonderfulness. Jake’s eating is becoming less and less fussy - today he did not even comment on a mustard sauce on a cheese sandwich where not so long ago he’d have turned his nose up at the sight of it and refused. They have settled into school happily and confidently and it has been a thrill to see them helping in lessons. At tea last night in a bustling café Jake went up to order fishburgers and vegetable fried rice, not easy with the staff having definite second language English, and then went to another counter to pay ... read more

We knew Sri Lanka was in the middle of a civil conflict but from the UK when you look on the map and read the news reports it seemed to happening just in one remote corner of the island. The newspapers here play down the conflict and it has been very difficult to get any real idea of what is happening. In particular they play down any human tragedy and the expulsion of the Channel 4 journalist a few days ago shows just how sensitive the government is to criticism. In the last few days the reality of the conflict has come much closer to us. Large numbers of civilian casualties from the refugee camp at Vavuniya have been evacuated to the hospital here in Kurunegala and other hospitals close to us in Kandy and Kegalle. ... read more

After another glorious weekend being pampered by Kannan and Sweta in Colombo on the train back we talked ourselves positive about where we are living, determined to focus on the good for our own enjoyment. It was wonderful to be hosted and relieved of responsibility. We arrived early on the Friday and lunched with them before spending the afternoon chilling in their flat, enjoying the shower - a full drencher with a view across the rooftops of Colombo to the Indian Ocean; catching up on various Internet essentials given a rare secure connection and editing the turtle video (or watching Kannan). Time was easy with stimulating and illuminating conversation and the joys of catching up with an old friend and making a new one. We drove round the city in an original Beetle. We ate ice ... read more

April 20th - May 5th (and on....) Some things stay the same no matter how far you travel. Joe had a cushy job which finished at 1:30 every day so he got to swim in the afternoon with the children. I sat in a hot little office until 4:30 every day and the only thing I get to swim in is the sweat running down my back! I had been in the office for 3 weeks and been absorbed into the fabric of the place. I had my own chair and table complete with an old emirates airline blanket for a tablecloth. We amicably share the 2 computers between 6 of us and yesterday finally got our dialup internet connection. Perhaps the sharing will be not quite so amicable from now on? I was included in ... read more

We were so proud of how the boys went into school, heads held high and smiles on their faces. They were nervous, but had the confidence in themselves to know they would be ok. Learning to overcome nervousness about the unknown and belief in their ability to cope with challenges were two of our hopes and expectations for what Jake and Elliot will get out of the trip. The principal of the primary school is a Leeds lass, who came out ten years ago and has stayed ever since, now married with Sri Lankan children. She has been gentle, enthusiastic and encouraging, and Elliot says he was OK from the moment she told him there was nothing to worry about. Elliot spends his 3 days a week in grade 3, and Jake has a day with ... read more

Journal 12 (Nearly) A week at work!.Monday 27th - Thursday 30th April Well in our 4th week out here we finally all got into work/school. The boys were the hardest to get in but in many ways got the most out once they were. We turned up on the Monday which was the boys school INSET day - spoke to some people, but the principal was away in meetings so could we come back in the morning. We duly did so with the boys fully prepared for school with packed lunches, pencil cases and litres of water. Had a productive meeting with the principal, but the boys could not go in yet as they were not ready - we were clearly a complete surprise for her, and despite assurances to the contrary NO contact had been ... read more
