Took the subway out to Suwon today -- an hour ride each direction.... I had thought that Suwon would be a little town surrounded by walls and gates, and it was, sort-of.... Actually, it was a huge city (think the size of Toronto) with a smaller section (think the size of downtown Toronto) that was behind walls and gates. And of course, it was on a mountain! We climbed and climbed and climbed and still only saw about 1/10 of the wall. It was hot (surprise!) of course and we were soaked by the time we got part-way up. I really wonder about the altitude though, because I have trouble breathing just climbing stairs. I know I'm not THAT in shape, but to be huffing and puffing after climbing about 25 stairs is a little worrisome! ... read more

I am back from a week in Seoul with plenty of pictures and a full suitcase. Eve and I arrived in Korea late Monday night (Aug.14) in Incheon and headed off to downtown Seoul, an hour away from the airport. We had a free shuttle bus with Japanese tourists through the tour copany we booked our flights through. The tour agent on board the bus though, chose to ignore us completely, despite our asking her questions in perfect Japanese. Arriving at our hostel- The Holiday In Korea- proved to be challenging, as both the cab driver, a hotel bell hop, and numerous people on the street had no idea where we were going, even with Korean directions. After circling the same few blocks and stopping random people on the street, we eventually found the place. Luckily, ... read more

Just a sunday walk around the neighborhood. Although only a four-minute taxi ride from downtown, I can stroll for ten minutes south and find the Children's Hall -- a museum/large play area for families. Behind the museum and the brick paths, I walked up toward a convent-looking building, and then up past a playing field and field house, and up into the woods. When I followed a path it swirled me back toward the city, but eastward...new neighborhoods. Although the same tall apartments lined up, facing the same direction, I felt as though I were in the suburbs of Daegu -- between the tall thin buildings there were trees and bushes, and even small playgrounds, or picnic benches. The quiet - the lack of cars in and out of the area made it feel very calm ... read more

I did some wandering today. Erika slept late because she had been up late drinking with a couple of guys we met last night in the hostel, and I was up and about by 9:00am. I know, hard to believe! Since she was still sound asleep, I decided to wander around the city a little bit, check out where the tour buses were supposed to leave from, and see if there was anything else of interest along the way, and always on the hunt for postcards. I walked past the subway stop where we had been yesterday, saw the Pagoda Park, and kept on walking. Lo and behold, along my travels I found a Subway! (I mean the sandwich shop.) Amazing! I also found another 2 McDonalds, 2 more KFCs and 2 more Mr. Pizzas. I ... read more

Two days ago, I took a six-hour train ride from Seoul to Yeosu with my co-teacher and principal. Beforehand, we had a ceremony where we all got introduced to our school officials. My co-teacher (Mr. Kim) and principal (Mr. Woo) flew to Seoul the night before and met me with smiles and kindness. All of the Fulbrighters and their school officials then had a joint luncheon, and it was very nice to start getting to know more about my school, my colleagues, and Korea. After that, I said goodbye to my fellow Fulbright ETAs (minus one, Colleen, who was going to Yeosu, too) and headed south. So far, it has been fabulous. I was nervous about meeting everyone (school officials, my host family, et al), but it has all turned out very well. My co-teacher has ... read more

Well, we've made it to Seoul and have checked into our hostel, Guesthouse Korea. I don't think I've stayed in a worse place. It's cheap, yes, but pretty cruddy. We have our own room, and our own bathroom, but no sink at all. I guess we'll be brushing our teeth in the bathtub! It looks like it's seen MUCH better days, so I think I'll wear those flipflops while in the shower...... Eeew. We walked around the nearby area today and saw some neat things: street vendors selling everything from tempura shrimp to watches to shoe repair guys to fortune tellers. Weird. There is a McDonalds, Burger King, and Mr. Pizza all near the closest subway station to us. We also hit Pagoda Park (ok, it has another name too, but don't ask me to find ... read more

I left for South Korea on the 15th of September 2005. I wanted to explore a new country, and with the job opportunity that came up, I just couldn't pass up. The three weeks in Europe, and two weeks in Mexico, only wetted my appetite to see the world. After two weeks at home, I couldn't wait to leave. My good friends Alex and Ben decided to get with me the night before I left and have a few drinks. A few drinks turned into a few pitchers, and a few pitchers turned into drunk beyond recognition. Got to the airport drunk at around 5 in the morning, and got into Chicago around 10. I left for Tokyo, and the 14 hr plane ride was pleasent. Another 2 hours to Seoul, and I had been travelling ... read more

I decided to go to Songtan because I had a deficiency of teaching shirts, and I needed to find new ones. A bunch of my friends were going and I thought it would be a fun outing. Songtan is a city right next to an American army base, so the shopping is good because it is geared to the Americans on the base. My friend Cat and I searched for clothes that would fit me, but they were very scarce: Korean women are deceptively tiny. I figured Steve would have a hard time finding clothes here because of his height (although I have since learned that Koreans are taller than I expected), but I figured being a small back home, I would still be able to find clothes here. I have to say I have never ... read more

Sorry it' s been so long, I 've been insanely busy with work the last few weeks. We have been holding summer intensive courses for the past 3 weeks and it ' s been a bit crazy around here. Our schedules have been quite hectic: get up around 8 am, try to have a quick bite to eat, at school by 8:45, class from 9:30-12:30, lunch, gym or Korean class or work meetings (sometimes all three), class 4:20-10:20, dinner, bed. As you can see I haven 't had time for much else. Things get back to normal next Wednesday when our summer school classes end. Then we only work from 4:20-10:20 Monday through Friday. Not too bad. A few updates though: we have started taking Korean classes through work and we have joined a gym! ... read more

Yes, that's right, I climbed a mountain today! We're staying in Mokpo, and we took a bus to the outskirts of the park. The intention was that we would go out to the Wolchsan National Park to find the suspension bridge. Little did we know that we would be climbing up for 2 hours. The signs said 1.9km, but we didn't know that they meant up! It was brutal, climbing up and up and up over rocks and me with a sore ankle and knee! Anyway, we made it to the top and got some pictures. (I finally found an internet cafe that would let me put pictures on here!) Erika was a little hesitant about crossing the bridge; apparently she doesn't like heights, even though it was her idea to climb to the bridge!! When ... read more
