9a Departure from Gusan. First stop was Gusan Modern History Museum. Tour was entirely in Korean so Halahbujee followed the tour group and RoAnJoSo chose to do self-guided visit of the museum. From what we could gather, Gusan or Gunsan is a very fertile area where rice grows in abundance. This made it a very attractive target for Japanese pirates, and during the Japanese occupation of Korea, it served as a major rice storage and distribution area. Still touring along the coast so lunch was seafood congee (Sophie picked out the clams and mussels) and a huge seafood pancake (Sophie ate the edges which didn't have any seafood). Food was very good. Stop number two was Naesosa Temple. This Buddhist template was established in 633 CE (CE = common era = AD). There were two temples ... read more

Getting off the train from Jeonju in Mokpo on 19 June. Once again I curse the Lonely Planet maps for their lack of street names! I have a good sense of direction, and always carry a compass, but as they only labelled two or three street names on the map I virtually only found a hotel that they recommended almost by accident after effectively becoming "lost" as there was nothing to get my bearings from. It's the Good Day hotel - a very narrow distinction between that and the Good Morning hotel I would think! And the supposed interesting restaurant which was supposedly virtually behind the hotel was nowhere to be seen or has gone out of business - the LP does not generally name restaurants in Korean script, which is also a problem as most ... read more

I was running around taking in all the new scents of the campsite. It smelled SO GOOD. There was all this food I had never seen! Luckily, I'm short and the people from Seoul easily lost track of me. I found a present of a whole loaf of bread just sitting in a bag for me! I felt sick after that, but it was the most fun I've had in awhile. I'm not really sure where my owner went, but I live with Paul now and he's the one that took me to meet his friends up on this hill above the ocean where they were setting up tents and hanging things in trees. Everybody kept picking me up. "Hey Sam, how ya doing buddy?" They put their faces so close to me. They don't smell ... read more

Hey everyone! Well, it's been a great month out here in Korea. Some of the lesser highlights: I've learned how to play the intelude from Blondie's "Heart of Glass" on guitar. I've gotten back into drawing in a rather large but pocket-friendly sketchbook I've got. Some of the more awesome highlights: Discovered after going to Noraebang without drinking that my singing voice has actually improved. I guess that's due to a lot of practice... I swear I thought noraebang was lame before I came here and tried it. I've been writing up a storm in my handwritten journal. Jotting down memories, things I've done, impressions of what its' like out here. I'll blame that on not giving this travel blog its' due efforts, I assure you all when I return to the USA that you will ... read more

It's that time again! Well this past month has been a lot of fun and a lot of work. For the 4th of July we went to Oedaldo and stayed at a traditional homestay. The free water park on the island's been opened up. There's two kinda big pools full of sea water, which was a surprise when I cannonballed into the water. So last weekend was fun in the sun. We set off a lot of fireworks and sang the national anthem on the 4th. Sunday was rather low key, one of our party was very ill from the night before. It's surprising how beautifully green everything is here, after all I came here during the start of winter. It's been very humid here, but I think no different than say Florida or Tennessee. It's ... read more

Well on a plus side, I was able to get the photos from my Busan trip off of my camera. Downside is the camera is toast. Let's see, some highlights of this past month. Where to begin... With me in the latter half of my contract now and building up to its' completion I've been bouncing back and forth between wanting to stick around another year or going home. I love it out here and hate it at times. It's hard to explain unless you've lived on the other side of the world for a long time. I turned 25 last week. A freaking quarter century. I've been very contemplative in the past two weeks'. It's easy to admit that when I graduated High School I hadn't anticipated this is where my life would take me. ... read more

Well, it's been awhile since I've updated my travel blog. A lot has been going on. For some highlights: My good friend John finished his contract a few weeks ago and we had a big weekend long celebration. I think right now he's in Cambodia, he planned on traveling after his contract was up. It was sad to see him go, but he'll be back in a few weeks to get his stuff and hop on an airplane back to the good ol' USA. The other night while walking home in the middle of the night, with pouring rain and blowing wind that had flipped my umbrella inside out I stepped on a snake. Scared the hell out of me. Of all the things in the world to accidentally stumble upon, a freaking snake. It was ... read more

Here's something I put in an email to my mom, thought I'd copy and paste it so I can have an update on here for Mother's Day. Happy Mothers Day! I gotta say I love this country. Yesterday was a good friend of mine's going away party and it was held on an island (Oedaldo). I had a make up day and had to work on Saturday. I went to work with my bag packed for overnight and rushed to the ferry terminal as soon as I could get out of work. I missed the last ferry by maybe thirty minutes. Not wanting to give up, I got in a taxi and went to the fisher's dock and found a boat that would take me and got there just as the sun set over the water. ... read more

Earlier this month, from the first through the 7th, my dad and Karen came to Korea. Here's my account of their visit. I saw him Friday the third through Tuesday the 7th. Well on Friday night, I had just gotten off work at 9:30. I knew my dad was taking the train into Mokpo, but we were having problems with his phone being able to reach me, so I walked to meet some friends for dinner. I get into the door and get a call from my dad, he's in Mokpo, and has been since 8:30pm. I took a cab to downtown and met him on the second floor of a building, Imsil Cheese Pizza. They had a lot of luggage, most of it being things from America I'd asked them to bring out for me. ... read more

Hey all, I'm going to Seoul finally. I've been here 4 months and passed up a few chances to go up and now a good chance came up so I'm going. I can't wait to go up there. It should be a lot of fun. We'll rent a car or van depending on how many people come with, and I can not emphasize how much road tripping around Korea is the way to travel. Buses are cool because you will go from point A to point B, but when you're in a car with friends you can stop at random places along the way if you feel like it, and you're not as limited to a schedule to make sure you don't miss the last bus. So you can stay later, and see the sights a ... read more
