Hi all, The flight over to Korea was a huge nightmare doted by little surprises. Leaving Toronto, 3 hours or so late was just the start. Thanks to the guy who brought fireworks onto a plane heading to Detroit on Christmas day, new security measures were put in place on all flights into the USA. My flight plan was supposed to go depart Toronto Pearson, to Chicago O'Hare to Incheon Seoul to Daegue. But at Pearson everyone was frisk searched by a security card before going on the plane and they also searched through all your carry-on luggage. We were also told that we would not be able to get up to go the bathroom during the whole flight which was about 1 hour and 30 minutes but once we were on board the pilot let ... read more

Ahh, I should update more often, but when I'm not teacher, I'm rotting my brain with KPop or KDrama. Too addicting. My bad. I'm going to try and write two entries in a row tonight, so bear with me :) It's time to launch into what it's like teaching English with ChungDahm April. For this semester, I've had it kind of easy, to be honest. At my branch, the students are broken into classes like this: * Seedbed: Starter, 1, 2 * Seed: 1, 2 * Sprout: 1, 2, 3 * Sapling: 1, 2 * Junior Master Anywho. I only teach Seed 1, Seed 2, Sprout 1, and Sprout 2. So the rest really doesn't apply to me. I usually get the youngest kids earlier in the day, and the older kids at night. Just because ... read more

Happy Festivus!

Happy Holidays from Lauren and Kagan!!! In the last month and a half we stuffed our faces full of mashed potatoes, Kagan's team won the frisbee championships, their were eight crazy nights of Chanukah, three different Secret Santas (which Lauren of course failed to keep secret) and a Jewish Santa Claus, to top it all off, visited our school. We may have been far from home for this season of family gatherings but we did not fail to eat until painfully full, surround ourselves with merry people and get in a bit of the holiday spirit. On Thanksgiving we hosted a potluck dinner. We loosened our belts and stuffed ourselves full of an unconventional Thanksgiving dinner. There might not have been any turkey or stuffing, but their were plenty of mashed potatoes, gravy, pumpkin pie (to ... read more

I am more than halfway through my second week of teaching English in Daegu, South Korea. I am exhausted, but I am having a blast! I should probably fill in a few blanks. After we passed training, Parker, Alisha, and I were dropped off at the train station in Seoul with KTX tickets. We waited around (caffeinated and ate some Korean Micky D's) for our train to Daegu. Some man came and bound up all of our luggage-- I guess we were in the way. When it was time to actually move it though, he never came back, so we dismantled the dolly he had set up, and I used my super German farm girl strength to bind our four largest suitcases together. Parker and Alisha took the other bags, and we made our way onto ... read more

A week ago, I took an excursion to understand "a Korean Confucianism". I visited a confucianism academy where is located in Dodong village, Dae-gu city. when I visited there, some Confucians, the old, have a conference about a worship of their ancestor who was a great Confucian in Jocheon dynasty(朝鮮王朝). He was expelled and finally had a death to poison by his king(King, Younsangoon), due to protesting against his unreasonable king. He had a pure loyalty to his king and his country. but his king is not enough clever to understood his pure loyalty to his king. this confucianism academy was built for worship and memorial for him. The king didn't have a concern how to rule his country rightly but did have a concern how to enjoy his life with many his concubines and ... read more

Our House is a Very Very Fine House

After another long delay we are back with new tales. Although the “honeymoon” phase of travel may be coming to an end, we are now enjoying the comforts of establishing a routine in a land that seemed as far from home as possible only a few months ago. When we are not working hard for the money taming the youngsters, we now spend our days playing Frisbee on Sundays with a local league, becoming regulars at our favorite local restaurants and making a circle of friends from here all the way to the southern hemisphere. These days we have been enjoying the simple pleasures of an ex-pat lifestyle. We play Frisbee in a park with views of a beautiful mountain. It has been a great way to make friends. Although we are on different teams we ... read more

My school yard is full of falling Autumn. A lot of leaves of trees turned greenery to colorful-yellow, brown, red-. I shot yellowed leaves and beautiful flowers in my school back yard and caught my some pupils with living in playground. You can enjoy these shoots. Leaves are falling, falling like falling snows, This fall is falling, falling with colored falling leaves.

I read in Daegu Pockets (a magazine for expats in Daegu) that the weekend of October 24th was the optimum time to go to Palgongsan mountain to see the autumn leaves. So Heather and I hopped on the Rapid Bus #1 and headed out to the mountain. We couldn't believe our luck, it was the perfect fall weather to head out to the mountains; cool, but not cold and sunny. On the downside, apparently half the city of Daegu was thinking the same thing. The traffic both out to the mountain and back was truly insaney but it was a great trip nonetheless. We decided to go to Donghwasa Temple instead of hiking (although since the Temple is on the mountain, it was a little like hiking anyway). I had been to the temple one other ... read more

Pay Day!!!

Published: October 8th 2009Asia » South Korea » Daegu

That's right, after six weeks in Korea we're finally making some money!! Its been a bit tight around here lately since we had to wait so long before our first pay check, but we've made do with plenty of budget adventures and meals (and one not so budget adventure... more to come on that). We're celebrating our first payday tonight by going to the make-it-yourself spring roll restaurant, our favorite place to eat so far in South Korea. Everyone says the first month is the hardest and we hope that's true. We're feeling more settled into the teaching life here and our network of friends continues to grow. Regrettably, yesterday we lost one of our first friends we made here as his year long contract ended, but he will hopefully be rejoining us in Korea in ... read more

Where to begin after our two week lapse? While M.I.A. we have officially become teachers, moved into our apartment, visited Busan and finally begun to make a home for ourselves in this crazy land called South Korea. Our days during the week now consist of taming young children as they tackle us for hugs at work, the daily struggle to teach a language even I have trouble speaking and learning the odds and ends of the working environment in a foreign culture. All in all, it's a sweet job. Grueling at times, but never boring. Apparently we are liked for being tall more than any other teaching skills we may or may not have, and for the first time in my life my pale skin receives much praise (I work hard to keep it so white, ... read more
