In January, much to my surprise, Miseon (the teacher whose wedding I went to last April) invited me to her younger brother's wedding. It was very much like Miseon's wedding with a few exceptions. One of the exceptions was that the father of the bride walked his daughter down the aisle. However, the bride and groom had still seen each other before the wedding since the groom had walked himself down the aisle right before the bride. The wedding hall was also very different. There was a raised aisle for the bride and groom to walk down, it kind of looked like a fashion runway. There were lights in the walls and on the ceiling that changed colors continuously. I was actually quite surprised that they left the lights on during the ceremony. The guests at ... read more

Happy New Year! I can't believe it's 2010 but I'm very excited that it is finally here! I'm hoping that 2010 will be a good year! I'm pretty confident that it will be quite interesting no matter what. The regular semester at my school ended on Tuesday and then Wednesday and Thursday we had English Camp. I have very little school responsibilities left before I come home. I just have a two day camp at Mike's middle school (this Monday and Tuesday), two weeks of conversation classes at my school (the 3rd and 4th week of January), and then a random week of classes in the middle of February (but I think I will only teach two of those days, if that). I'm so excited! Things are finally wrapping up. Aside from relishing in the excitement ... read more

We finally have internet in our apartment! Wooo! We just got our alien registration cards this week (the cards that we needed before we could set up internet at our apartment) and now we are reconnected with the rest of the world. While the internet man was here yesterday (a really nice guy who spoke a little bit of English!! :) we were also playing around with the TV. We discovered that we get the discovery channel ( in English!!). It was a very exciting day! Let's see... I'll catch up on some of the more interesting things that have happened during the past three weeks. :) On the Thursday during my second week at my school there was a teachers dinner. Everyone that works at the school was to be in attendance. After school at ... read more

No better way to start the week off right than with a broken boiler. That's right, no hot water and since we have gas heat, no heat either. It broke sometime Sunday and since Sunday was the weekend, we knew it had to wait until at least the next day. Mike tried to fix it and even after searching around online to figure out how to read the thermostat (yep, that's in Korean too) and fix the dying cyborg cow that is our boiler, we were definitely going to be waiting until someone came to fix it. Needless to say we took old school showers on Monday morning. That's right my friends, we heated up the water on the stove and then took it into the bathroom. I knew all of my grandpa's stories would ... read more

OK, this time the location has moved and so have we. Friday we left Cheonan and got on a bus to Daegu. Including a lunch stop it took us about four hours to get here. The lunch stop was at a little hole in the wall joint right off of the highway. I'm still getting used to the food so it still amazes me that anyone can eat a Korean meal and not walk away hungry. Once we got into Daegu, we stopped first at the Daegu Education Office. We brought our luggage into the building and then the 30 or so of us that will be teaching in Daegu went into a room to do paperwork. They photocopied our passports and medical reports, offered us some books on teaching ESL, and gave us an alien ... read more

It’s strange how the older I get the more things seem to strike me as odd and unexpected. And in that same breath I feel wiser and more able to deal with my surroundings. I am not sure which analogy is more apt but sometimes I feel as if I have been standing on the shore of life for so long that my feet have become well anchored to the seas of time and other times I feel like a buoy that stands as a beacon point for others and while my life my undulate up and down in the waves of time I never really move anywhere. I see so many coincidences in my everyday life that force me to believe there has to be something more guiding it along. Is it me? I am ... read more

Last year at this time I was slaving away as a Manager at one of the coolest venues on the east coast, toiling away in a semi-stuper, working toward some unknown goal. I had no motivation and very little thought of mobility within the company, all the same I worked hard and tried to make each day pass without incident. Then suddenly one day in January, just after my birthday, and with some overseas correspondence between myself and my friend Kat, I decided to up and leave it behind and move to Korea. I am still not sure what my motivations were, but I do know this, I needed a change. As my parents would say I “needed to grow up.” So off I went, in almost a blink of an eye and much to the ... read more

Well the weather has finally cooled off to a lovely temperature and decided to take advantage of the incredibly broad-reaching wifi connections that this country has to offer and made my way to the park down the street from my house. I can’t believe how long I’ve been here and how quick its gone y. This certainly has proved to be the best decision I’ve ever made. It really has helped me grow and learn about myself. It really is amazing what your mind can assimilate as normal when given no other option. Somedays I find myself forgetting the rest of existence and I feel like I am floating in this great state of limbo. I am right where I should be at the time I am supposed to be here. Don’t get me wrong this ... read more

The Headlines: So yes I know it’s been forever since I’ve written (almost 2 months now), but life has gotten pretty settled in here and my OH MY GOD moments are getting less and less. It’s really funny how quickly you can become adapted to a new environment. Work is work, friends are friends, and I even have my own regular bar. But don’t get me wrong, things havent gotten any less amazing since I wrote last. In fact it’s been as if the gas pedal has been pushed to the max and I am just holding on for the wild ride. Anyway, here it goes, my update email. First of all, I’ll tell everyone now, I’ve decided to do another year here in Korea. I think I will be moving to Busan, the beach town ... read more

So it finally happened, I had to say goodbye to my first friend in Korea yesterday. It is the nature of a job like this that everyone you know will eventually leave and then one day it will be you saying goodbye to everyone left. It's a strange circle, I don't think I've really ever been in a situation like this, the closest I can relate it to is college when people graduate, but that is en masse and usually only once a year. In this case I think it is for the best, my friend Kat was not having a good time here and fate seemed to be stacked against her, I do have to hand it to her though, she stuck it out for 7 long months, through trial and tribulation. She is ... read more
